Spatial Population Models In Spatiotemporally Structured Environments, David Hiebeler Nov 2011

Spatial Population Models In Spatiotemporally Structured Environments, David Hiebeler

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

Spatial effects, such as habitat fragmentation and the location and size of disturbance events, play a key role in the dynamics of populations. This is true in natural populations (such as herbs living under a forest canopy) as well as human-dominated systems (for example, crop pests in agricultural landscapes). Focusing on the development of spatial population models, the project seeks to better understand how and why spatially autocorrelated disturbances affect the dynamics of populations with mixtures of short- and long-distance dispersal. A variety of disturbances are considered, including (1) static disturbance, representing habitat heterogeneity across a landscape; (2) short-term disturbance …

The Impact Of Category Separation On Unsupervised Categorization, Shawn W. Ell, Gregoryh F. Ashby Nov 2011

The Impact Of Category Separation On Unsupervised Categorization, Shawn W. Ell, Gregoryh F. Ashby

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Most previous research on unsupervised categorization has used unconstrained tasks in which no instructions are provided about the underlying category structure or the stimuli are not clustered into categories. Few studies have investigated constrained tasks in which the goal is to learn pre-defined stimulus clusters in the absence of feedback. These studies have generally reported good performance when the stimulus clusters could be separated by a one-dimensional rule. The present study investigated the limits of this ability. Results suggest that even when two stimulus clusters are as widely separated as in previous studies, performance is poor if within-category variance on …

Collaborative Research: Microparticle/Tephra Analysis Of The Wais Divide Ice Core, Karl J. Kreutz, Andrei V. Kurbatov, Mark Wells, Paul Andrew Mayewski

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This award supports a project to perform continuous microparticle concentration and size distribution measurements (using coulter counter and state-of-the-art laser detector methods), analysis of biologically relevant trace elements associated with microparticles (Fe, Zn, Co, Cd, Cu), and tephra measurements on the WAIS Divide ice core. This initial three-year project includes analysis of ice core spanning the instrumental (~1850-present) to mid- Holocene (~5000 years BP) period, with sample resolution ranging from subannual to decadal. The intellectual merit of the project is that it will help in establishing the relationships among climate, atmospheric aerosols from terrestrial and volcanic sources, ocean biogeochemistry, and …

Peer Acceptance And Friendship As Predictors Of Early Adolescents' Adjustment Across The Middle School Transition, Julie Newman Kingery, Cynthia A. Erdley, Katherine C. Marshall Jul 2011

Peer Acceptance And Friendship As Predictors Of Early Adolescents' Adjustment Across The Middle School Transition, Julie Newman Kingery, Cynthia A. Erdley, Katherine C. Marshall

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

This study examines several aspects of adolescents' pretransition peer relationships as predictors of their adjustment to middle school. Participants were 365 students (175 boys; 99% Caucasian) involved in the Time 1 (the spring of fifth grade) and Time 2 (the fall of sixth grade) assessments. Adolescents completed measures that assessed peer acceptance, number of friends, the quality of a specific mutual friendship, loneliness, depression, self-esteem, and involvement in school. Academic achievement and absentee data were obtained from student files. Regression analyses indicated that the pretransition peer variables predicted posttransition loneliness, self-esteem, school involvement, and academic achievement. The patterns of prediction …

The Impact Of Sexual Harassment On Depressive Symptoms During The Early Occupational Career, Jason N. Houle, Jeremy Staff, Jeylan T. Mortimer, Christopher Uggen, Amy M. Blackstone Jul 2011

The Impact Of Sexual Harassment On Depressive Symptoms During The Early Occupational Career, Jason N. Houle, Jeremy Staff, Jeylan T. Mortimer, Christopher Uggen, Amy M. Blackstone

Sociology School Faculty Scholarship

Sexual harassment has been theorized as a stressor with consequences for the physical and mental health of its targets. Although social scientists have documented a negative association between sexual harassment and mental health, few longitudinal studies have investigated the association between sexual harassment and depressive symptoms. Using longitudinal survey data from the Youth Development Study, combined with in-depth interviews, this article draws on Louise Fitzgerald’s theoretical framework, stress theory, and the life course perspective to assess the impact of sexual harassment on depressive affect during the early occupational career. In support of Fitzgerald’s model, the authors’ findings confirm that sexual …

Maine Folklife Center Newsletter

British Ballads from Maine, edited by Phillips Barry, Fannie Hardy Eckstorm and Mary Winslow Smyth was published by Yale University Press in 1929. It is an academic collection of Child ballads that the authors collected from singers in Maine. Each ballad is listed with Child numbers with variants used to illustrate the sources and dates of the collection. The authors hoped to demonstrate the richness of New England as a ballad area, to prove that many American ballad texts are old compared with those printed in the Child collection, and to provide a handbook for fieldworkers who might wish to …

Comfort Levels When Presented With Interpersonal Stressors As A Function Of Sibling Status, Emma R. Atherton

Honors College

This study was designed to examine how people with siblings and people without siblings (only children) handle situations of interpersonal tension and confrontation. In order to examine this additional data about sibling status was collected via a follow-up survey from participants in a previous study. In the previous study, University of Maine female students were told that they were going to be assessed on a two-minute speech about their future plans and goals by a male participant in another room. Throughout this experiment physiological and self-report measures were taken. The 137 participants in this study were contacted via telephone and …

Urbanization, Water Quality, And The Regulated Landscape, Dave Owen Apr 2011

Urbanization, Water Quality, And The Regulated Landscape, Dave Owen

Publications

Watershed scientists frequently describe urbanization as a primary cause of water quality degradation, and recent studies conclude that even in lightly-developed watersheds, urbanization often precludes attainment of water quality standards. This article considers legal responses to this pervasive problem. It explains why traditional legal measures have been ineffective, and it evaluates several recent innovations piloted in the northeastern United States and potentially applicable across the nation. Specifically, the innovations involve using impervious cover TMDLs, residual designation authority, and collective permitting. More generally, the innovations involve transferring regulatory focus from end-of-the-pipe to landscape-based controls. I conclude that the innovations, while raising …

The Truth About "Right To Work" Laws, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine Jan 2011

The Truth About "Right To Work" Laws, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine

Bureau of Labor Education

There are many misconceptions about “right-to-work” laws. This sounds like it would be a plus for working people. However, this term is misleading, and a distortion of the reality underlying it. Despite its name, right-to-work laws do not guarantee anyone a job, protect against unfair firing, guarantee equitable wages, or decent working conditions. By undermining unions and the ability of labor and management to bargain freely, right-to-work laws weaken the best job security protection workers have -- the union contract. Maine has rejected such a law a number of times in the past, including a 1948 referendum in which state …

Maine Shared Collections Strategy, Deborah Rollins, Clem Guthro, Barbara Mcdade, Matthew Revitt Jan 2011

Maine Shared Collections Strategy, Deborah Rollins, Clem Guthro, Barbara Mcdade, Matthew Revitt

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

Libraries are facing fundamental changes in user demands for new services and spaces to support the use of digital collections, and new opportunities to offer digital content through large scale e-book collections such as Google Books and the Open Content Alliance. Simultaneously, libraries feel pressures to responsibly steward sizeable, historic print collections. These challenges, together with scarce funding to build new stacks and the increasing cost of housing legacy print collections require libraries to rethink management of print collections and delivery of e-book collections to their users. Print on demand services and delivery of e-book content provide opportunities to plan …
