The Impact Of Dual Identities Of College Student-Athletes On Academic Performance, Stephen E. Knott
The Impact Of Dual Identities Of College Student-Athletes On Academic Performance, Stephen E. Knott
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
Maintaining a balance between the dual roles of being both a student and an athlete can be challenging for many college student-athletes. While research has indicated identity conflicts exist for student-athletes because of these two roles, few investigations have analyzed the impact of having dual identities on academic performance. Using identity theory as a theoretical framework, this study sought to determine if relationships exist among athlete identity, student identity, and GPA. In addition, this study examined whether these relationships varied based on gender, race, year in school, major, and sport. A survey instrument that included the Academic and Athletic Identity …
"We Are Still In Apartheid:" Girls' Perspectives On Education Inequality In Democratic South Africa And Models For Social Change, Rebekah Lindsey Joyce
"We Are Still In Apartheid:" Girls' Perspectives On Education Inequality In Democratic South Africa And Models For Social Change, Rebekah Lindsey Joyce
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Centering on the perceptions of black South African girl learners from impoverished township communities provides a new informed lived knowledge regarding social and educational inequality in the nation’s post-apartheid era. Perspectives from intersectional feminist theory and Black Feminist Thought offer an appropriate and unique approach to analyze the multiple socio-economic inequalities these girl learners face every day. By gathering original narrative data from a group of girls, their teachers, and the principal of Fezeka Secondary School in Gugulethu, South Africa, the intersections of inequality these girls face will be illuminated as critical factors to consider for policy and program aid …

A Methodological Study Of The Use Of “Aha!” Ratings In Research On Insight Problem Solving And Creativity, Alonzo Anderson, Aekta Javia, Joseph Abijaoudi, Holly Fizgerald, Won Valerius, Chelsea Dilks
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Creativity is often associated with people experiencing sudden flashes of inspiration and understanding. These type of experiences have been called insights or “Aha!” moments. “Aha!” moments or insightful solutions are often described as answers that suddenly appear in the mind, with little effort, and extreme confidence that the answer is correct. This can be contrasted with incremental or analytically solved problems where solutions are reached through effortful, deliberate, and strategically application of prior knowledge. Researchers have often used subjective ratings of participants’ own “Aha!” experiences to differentiate between insightful and incrementally solved problems. In the current study we investigated the …

Developing A Measure Of Psychological Aggression: Stage 2, Arushi Deshpande, Shanon Sabo, John Delosreyes, Shelia Manning, Miguel A. Padilla
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Current research indicates that psychological aggression can lead to physical aggression. Thus, accurate measures of psychological aggression can be used to quell future physical aggression. However, unsound psychometric properties and fragmented definitions have diminished the accuracy of current psychological aggression scales. The purpose here is to create a sound psychological aggression scale. This part of the study focused on pilot testing preliminary items written to capture behaviors that constitute psychological aggression. An analysis revealed that some preliminary items required removal because of their abnormal distributions. The next step is to field test the items to establish the factor structure of …

The Role Of Perceived Control In Customer Value Cocreation And Service Recovery Evaluation, Lin Guo, Sherry L. Lotz, Chuanyi Tang, Thomas W. Gruen
Marketing Faculty Publications
Treating customers as passive recipients of service recovery does not account for their naturally elevated desire for control following a service failure. Focusing on value cocreation by customers in service recovery, this study conceptualizes three types of customer perceived control in service recovery: process control, decision control, and information control. Using both a field study and a controlled experiment to test the conceptual model, this study reveals various ways service firms can engage customers in service recovery to enhance their service experience. The results show that customers are motivated to exert influence on and regain control over service recovery because …

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
This quantitative study examined the relationship between specific teacher-child interaction behaviors and language modeling quality in Pre-K classrooms using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) framework. Data were collected from structured observations in 11 Pre- K classrooms in Southeast Virginia during spring and summer 2024. The Language Modeling dimension was assessed through five key indicators: frequent conversations, open-ended questions, repetition and extension, self and parallel talk, and use of advanced language. Descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation, and regression analyses were employed to examine relationships between observed teacher behaviors and overall language modeling scores. Results revealed weak and statistically non-significant correlations across …

Facilitating A Whole-Life Approach To Career Development: The Role Of Organizational Leadership, Michael L. Litano, Debra A. Major
Psychology Faculty Publications
This article focuses on the whole-life approach to career development. A review of the ways in which career paths have been conceptualized over time demonstrates that increasing consideration has been given to nonwork factors (i.e., personal life and family life) in defining careers. The whole-life perspective on career development acknowledges that employees are striving for opportunities for professional development as well as individualized work-life balance, which changes over the life course. Although the careers literature has emphasized interorganizational mobility as the primary mechanism for achieving these goals, whole-life career development can also be achieved within a single organization when organizational …

State of the Commonwealth Reports
A recent study found that 47 percent of all current jobs are susceptible to loss because of automation and the use of artificial intelligence. The key to a worker’s job vulnerability relates primarily to whether that worker is engaged in repetitive work that can be replicated by a machine or software using artificial intelligence.

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Our regional economy is on track in 2016 to record a “real” (after inflation) economic growth rate of only 1.20 percent – well below our 2.60 percent average economic growth rate over the past 30 years. We have yet to recover all of the jobs we lost in the Great Recession. The outlook for 2017 is not much better.

Virginia imprisons large numbers of people; this is expensive. Economic analysis suggests that we would save money if we did not imprison so many people, redefined what constitutes a felony and gave more attention to preparing prisoners for re-entry into society.
