Interpretation Of Grammatical Gender Among English Monolingual Speakers, Diego De Gregorio

This research project aimed to discover how English monolingual speakers interpret the idea of grammatical gender, and if they have an innate bias toward associating common English nouns to the masculine gender. My hypothesis was that participants would assign a masculine grammatical gender to words at a greater than chance due to an existent internalized genderism/sexism within the participants. To gather data, a Qualtrics survey was designed to test participants. Said survey was limited to people who only speak English and contained 10 different common nouns. The Links Between Young Children’S Use Of Pacifiers And Swaddling With Child Sleep Arousal, Kenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois

Sleep arousal, or waking experiences during sleep, in young children was examined in relation to pacifier usage and the caregiver’s use of the swaddling technique. Primary caregivers of young children from 1 to 24 months old, fluent in English, and 18 years or older completed a Qualtrics survey detailing their child’s sleep routines. The survey questions considered the child’s use of self-soothing devices and the caregiver’s use of soothing techniques, namely pacifiers and swaddling. By utilizing the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire-Revised (BISQ-R; Sadeh et al., 2020), we examined the relationship between child sleep arousal and pacifier usage, along with sleep …

This paper intends to examine the possible relationship between demographic variables and perceptions of happiness. The demographic variables being studied are age and gender. Perceptions of happiness are measured by the Conceptions of Happiness Scale (Joshanloo, 2018) and represent one’s overall idea of happiness. A survey was distributed to adults that were recruited via social media and flyer recruitment on the campus of Lindenwood University. The survey consisted of demographic questions as well as the Conceptions of Happiness Scale (Joshanloo, 2018) for participants to complete. Social media is an ever-growing phenomenon, and while having the world at our fingertips proves convenient, it also has the potential to cause harm in the form of mental distress. Several studies have investigated whether the use of social media may be linked to body image issues. The present study further explored the potential link between social media and body image, specifically looking for a correlation between the number of hours spent on social media and intensity of body image concerns. The following paper summarizes the implications, processes, and preliminary findings from a research study conducted by an undergraduate psychology student at Lindenwood University. The study experimentally investigated the relationship between a juror’s socioeconomic status (SES) and the likelihood that they would choose to convict a randomly selected defendant. It was hypothesized that a participant of a higher SES would be more likely to convict a defendant than would a participant of a lower SES. The growth of mycorrhizal fungi into plant roots used to be viewed as a parasitic relationship between plants and fungi, where the fungal symbiont benefits and the plant host is harmed. Current research elucidates a mutualistic relationship. The mycorrhizae network assists the plants by increasing the capabilities for nutrient absorption in the soil. In exchange, the fungi receive carbon supply from the photosynthetic plants for growth. Our scientific understanding of other topics like species specificity, seed germination, and co-evolutionary influence of mycorrhizae and plants has also progressed. Institutions of higher education (IHE) have worked tirelessly to mitigate the effect of SARS-Co-V2 (COVID-19) on their campuses. Shortly after COVID-19 hit Missouri, several state departments united their efforts to understand and problem-solve around the pandemic. The Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (DHEWD) led one such effort, facilitating weekly meetings with members from Missouri’s IHE. The research team reviewed thirty-one video recordings from November 4, 2020, to June 9, 2021, and interviewed DHEWD staff. Using focused coding, the research team identified the role of DHEWD, leaders that emerged during the process, several challenges IHE faced during the …

The well-being and education of three- and four-year-old children living in Kansas and Missouri is examined. The need for quality preschool education and its importance and history are viewed along with the licensing and regulations for preschools and that of preschool teachers. In addition, each state’s funding, state standards, regulations, supporting grants, Head Start programs, parent involvement, and special education services are compared and presented as state-to-state examples of “Laboratories of Democracy.”

This article discusses various avenues to law enforcement reform that have been proposed, especially in regard to adoption of evidence-based practices. The authors advocate for specific reforms regarding eyewitness identification policies and protocols, and offer an overview of the supporting research. A brief history of the challenges to police reform is presented with an emphasis on how political factors stymie success. The authors assert that expanding use of model policies for eyewitness identification, either through legislation or appealing to agencies to voluntarily adopt such policies, is relatively apolitical and requires minimal to moderate cost and effort.

This paper explains a research proposal on the relationship between demographic variables and life satisfaction of college students. The variables being measured are gender, race, socioeconomic class, and college majors. A literature review was conducted to examine previous research on these variables in relation to life satisfaction. A relationship between these variables was found throughout the research studies that were analyzed. The proposed methodology for this research is a survey distributed to students at Lindenwood University. Objective: Explicit and implicit attitudes play a role in disability discrimination. The purpose of this study was to look at the relationship between explicit and implicit attitudes towards people with disabilities. Method: Participants (N = 78) were asked to complete an online survey with 10 questions asking them to rate the extent to which they agree or disagree with questions measuring explicit attitudes. Participants then completed an Implicit Association Test (IAT) looking at disabilities. The IAT measured participants’ accuracy and speed when sorting pictures indicating abled-body people or disabled-body people and words associated with “good” or “bad” connotations. Participants’ …

Performance-based funding is a strategy that connects state funding directly to institutional performance on public campuses through indicators such as student retention, graduation rates, and cost efficiency. The policy was first adopted by Tennessee in 1979; since then many states have experimented with measures that attempt to finance higher education based on university performance. Missouri has a history of allocating additional state resources on the basis of performance through the Funding for Results program from the 1990s. The Missouri Division of Youth Services (DYS) approach to juvenile justice has become a national model, often referred to as “The Missouri Model.” Missouri’s approach has produced positive outcomes including satisfactory discharges, high law-abiding rates, and low rates of recidivisms. Although a model for other states, the Missouri DYS Model lacks an essential component of youth rehabilitation: the family. Starting in the 1830s, cemeteries in cities like St. Louis became more than just burial grounds. They became places people visited and conveyors of a city’s collective memory. All this was conveyed in Truman Marcellus Post’s sermon at the dedication of Bellefontaine Cemetery in 1850.

As late as the early 1990s, the only comprehensive book on Missouri’s birds was Otto Widmann’s Preliminary Catalog of the Birds of Missouri, published in 1907. Widmann documented the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, which has just one habitat in the United States—in St. Louis.
