The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And School Performance, Trina M. Ward May 2012

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And School Performance, Trina M. Ward

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Self-esteem is what some may define as self-confidence. School performance is what society may define as participation in the classroom or how much effort you put forth into learning. This research was designed to see if a correlation between school performance and self-esteem exists. Participants were recruited at Lindenwood University and chose to take the study for extra credit in a particular class. Thirty-three participants were assigned to complete a single survey, with questions asking for their views about themselves, their participation in school activities, and demographic questions which included age and sex. Results showed that there was a weak …

The Effects Of Priming On Self-Esteem With An Emphasis On Extroversion, Jamie A. Zagar, Danielle C. Merli May 2009

The Effects Of Priming On Self-Esteem With An Emphasis On Extroversion, Jamie A. Zagar, Danielle C. Merli

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This experiment looked at priming on self-esteem. We were also interested in the differences between extroverts and introverts in relation to priming on self-esteem. A priming message with a graphic was used on the experimental group, while only the graphic (same image) was used for the control group. We measured extroversion between the two groups to look for differences within and between the group conditions, in relation to self-esteem. Participants in the experimental group were expected to have a higher self-esteem. A significant difference was found. The priming condition showed that participants had a higher self-esteem. However, a relationship between …

How Do You Compare? The Correlations Of Social Desirability And Self-Esteem As Well As Social Desirability And Self-Consciousness, Kristy Johnson, Kristy Myers May 2009

How Do You Compare? The Correlations Of Social Desirability And Self-Esteem As Well As Social Desirability And Self-Consciousness, Kristy Johnson, Kristy Myers

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

In the present study, 81 participants were asked to self-report their levels of self-esteem and self-consciousness using Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale and Fenigstein’s Self-Consciousness Scale, respectively, as well as report their current semester GPA in order to study the correlations between these variables and the variable of GPA inflation. There was no significance found for the correlations between the level of GPA inflation and experimental condition, between GPA inflation and self-esteem, or between GPA inflation and self-consciousness for the 35 participants with obtainable GPA’s. However, the present researchers did find significance in the correlation between inflated GPA and self-consciousness for the …

Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem And Their Correlations With Codependency, Rachel N. Rogers Nov 2008

Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem And Their Correlations With Codependency, Rachel N. Rogers

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The present study examined the correlations between implicit and explicit self-esteem and codependency. Implicit self-esteem involves automatic, over-learned self-evaluations and explicit self-esteem refers to conscious feelings of one’s self. It was predicted that participants who scored higher on the implicit self-esteem measure would score lower on the codependency scale, regardless of scores on the explicit self-esteem scale. Participants engaged in a timed task involving me/not-me primes and positive/negative words to measure implicit self-esteem. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Spann-Fischer Codependency Scale were used to measure explicit self-esteem and codependency, respectively. Should a strong negative correlation be found between codependency …

The Sexual Image Of Women In Television: The Effect On Young Women In America, Amanda Reed, Rachel Rogers May 2007

The Sexual Image Of Women In Television: The Effect On Young Women In America, Amanda Reed, Rachel Rogers

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to look at the portrayal of the sexual image of women on television from 1970 through 2000 by rating the main female character on an appearance and communication score, which was done by the two experimenters. We hypothesized that the stereotypical appearance and communication score would increase from 1970 to 2000. However, the trend analysis showed that the appearance score decreased, implying that the stereotypical appearance of women has lessened through the years. The communication score increased from 1980 to 2000, implying a more stereotypical portrayal of women. If future, more thorough research finds …

A Study Of Self-Esteem And Grade Point Average (Gpa) Among College Students, Erin K. Bowen, Carl A. Hicks May 2005

A Study Of Self-Esteem And Grade Point Average (Gpa) Among College Students, Erin K. Bowen, Carl A. Hicks

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The study examined the possible relationship between self-esteem and grade point average (GPA) held by college students. One hundred forty college students completed a survey, through the Human Subject Pool, as well as at the end of five separate classes, to determine their level of self-esteem as well as to obtain their permission to view their GPA anonymously. Results suggest that there is a positive relationship between selfesteem and grade point average
