When disaster hits and space is at a premium or when other offices need or want space, eyes often turn towards the library. After a tornado hit the campus and their building was devastated, the University’s Library became the home to one academic unit’s classes. Additionally, after a new division was created, the Library once again lost space. This case study explores that academic library’s experience with both situations and the work the library staff completed to prepare the spaces for non-library entities to move into the building.

Building Librarians’ Research Skills Through Experiential Learning, Raeda K. Anderson, Katherine Fisher, Emily Williams, George Usmanov

Georgia Library Quarterly

Experiential learning programs are an effective method to teach data-focused research skills and statistical analysis. We examine the effects of a participatory research training program developed and executed by a data librarian and administered to library employees at a large academic library. The program aimed to improve research skills and increase research productivity. This study employs a survey within a concurrent mixed methods methodological framework to examine the outcomes of the training program. Our findings show that the program served as a low-cost, short-term, effective method of teaching data collection and quantitative analysis that increased participants’ knowledge of the research …

This article describes PracticeCon, a mini conference put on by the Middle Georgia Emerging Librarians, the Georgia Library Association's New Members Round Table and Special Libraries and Information Services Division. The aim of the event was to offer presentation tips and tricks to library workers and give them the opportunity to practice presenting. The article reflects on the presentations that were done and what was learned during the event.

The professionalization of addressing conflict creates a field filled with specialists highly trained to apply modularized and manualized, often evidence-based solutions. But how effective are these professionalized conflict management strategies in Indigenous and localized cultural contexts compared to homegrown Indigenous approaches? While instances of these Indigenous peacebuilding and conflict management strategies are routine throughout the world, to date, no one has attempted to test which conflict management approaches are most effective empirically, nor has the literature sufficiently addressed the contexts in which strategies are most helpful. Disaster lawyers navigate bureaucratic impediments to insuranceclaims and settlement and federal recovery and relief, and they actas third-party facilitators for disaster-affected clients to help enable theirsurvival efforts. The roles of such lawyers in navigating paperwork andbureaucratic processes on behalf of survivors, while assisting them inmeeting basic daily needs, has become seen as being integral to recoveryin these processes. We utilise findings from semi-structured interviewswith disaster law practitioners working with disaster survivors in thesouth-eastern United States (SEUS) to examine the bureaucratic socio-legallife of disasters.
