Standing on the deck in the cold of the night, I could

distinguish lights some distance away on both sides of the

ship. It was clear we were in a kind of channel. Another

passenger said it was a Norwegian fjord. How he could

tell, I didn't know, because it was pretty dark out there.

This thesis explores the stories which revolve around folk legend Hugh Winder Nibley and what those stories mean to the people of Brigham Young University. Folklore reveals who we are and what is important to us. But, interestingly, folklore tends to reveal more about the person telling the story than about the subject of the story itself. People can't remember every story they hear. The ones they do remember are important to them. The stories are important because they fulfill basic needs of the teller. This thesis is a record of a journey into the pioneer past both literally and metaphorically. The physical journey retracing the Oregon and Mormon trails was made in September of 1993, the year I was a National Endowment for the Humanities/Reader's Digest Teacher-Scholar; however, my intellectual and emotional journey into the lives of pioneer women covers several years of study. I compare my life experiences with those of pioneer women whom I studied, using geographical settings on the trail trip as memory triggers. Diphthongization In Spanish Derivational Morphology: An Empirical Investigation, David Eddington

The alternation between the mid-vowels / e/, /o/ and the diphthongs /je/ and /we/ is widespread in Spanish, and several rule-based analyses claim to account for it. However, they are founded on a small body of evidence. These analyses are evaluated against data from a large corpus, and cannot account for the non-discrete nature of diphthongization as evidenced in the corpus. The corpus data suggest that diphthongization has a gradient relationship to the derivational suffixes. · A nonderivational account, based on Bybee's model (1985, 1988, 1991), better embodies the scalar relationship between diphthongization and the suffixes. According to Kimball Young, "My five quarters at Chicago fixed me for life." This account of Kimball YOung's career begins with his experience at the University of Chicago where he obtained an A.M. in 1918. These early experiences with the founders of the Chicago School had a lasting impact on his career in sociology. Young's memoirs focus on his relationships with his mentors, colleagues and students at Chicago and at the subsequent colleges and universities with which he worked. This oral history offers remarkable insights into the lives of scholars who shaped sociology in the first two-thirds of the century.

The intent of the present work responds to the necessity of the settlers in depressed areas of La Paz's Altiplano in Bolivia of knowing the reality surrounding the unfolding of their lives. The focus takes into account only one part of all that weighs down on them: that part dealing with their nutritional and alimentative state. town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. With a

population of only a few hundred, it could hardly be

called a city. But the forefathers had visions of a major rail way

and highway junction at this location, providing prosperity

and a great future for all. As it was, the railway went

straight through town and trains seldom stopped there.

The Psychological Status Of Phonological Analyses, David Eddington

This paper casts doubt on the psychological relevance of many phonological analyses. There are four reasons for this: 1) theoretical adequacy does not necessarily imply psychological significance; 2) most approaches are nonempirical in that they are not subject to potential spatiotemporal falsification; 3) phonological analyses are established with little or no recourse to the speakers of the language via experimental psychology; 4) the limited base of evidence which most analyses are founded on is further cause for skepticism.

English is a language with many possibilities for wordplay, and word lay has been exploited by entertainers and advertisers. At times it involves simple puns, and at other times complex structural plays on words. Important developments in the history of the English language contribute to the current possibilities for word play. This article will examine some of these developments that have contributed specifically to wordplay involving structural ambiguities.

Religion And Racism: An Examination Of Values And Racial Attitudes, Timothy B. Smith, Richard N. Roberts

Throughout history, both the oppression and emancipation of racial and ethnic groups have often been conducted under the influence of religion. Contemporary research, often marked by contradictions itself, has also made note of this complex issue. To examine further the association of religious variables with racial attitudes and personal values, data were collected from 752 subjects. The results lent support to the hypothesis that when examining racial attitudes, religious affiliation is a less meaningful variable than the importance of spirituality in the lives of individuals; also, two values historically associated with religion, Humanitarianism and the "Protestant work ethic" were moderately …

This thesis uses content analysis to compare two conservative Christian feminist publications: Daughters of Sarah, produced by neo-evangelical feminists, and Exponent II, produced by Mormon feminists. Findings are based on insights from three main theories: Debra Minkoff's organization-environment perspective, Nancy Folbre's model of collective action based on structures of constraint, and the church-sect typology from the sociology of religion literature. Although both organizations similarly endeavor to integrate feminist and religious identities, the loose boundaries of evangelicalism allow Daughters of Sarah to explore a more liberal feminist agenda and interact with broader feminist sources while still remaining within the …

They call this emphasis "healthy intentions, unhealthy outcomes." In an innovative way Waters and Lawrence help clients uncover the competent strivings underlying pathological behaviors. Once these strivings are uncovered, the therapist and client can work together to find effective ways of reaching goals without engaging in destructive behaviors. Premarital sexual coercion is defined as nonconsensual sexual activity between two persons who are not married to each other but who are involved in an intimate relationship with one another. Factors and consequences associated with premarital sexual coercion are presented, and three possible clinical scenarios are discussed.

1994-95 the "Year of Grundtvig," and to formally observe

with the entire Grand View community the influence of

the great Dane upon the college and its educational philosophy.

What, after all, could be more fitting for a college

whose most recent Academic Mission Statement proudly

declares its founding "by Danish immigrants who sought

to give the educational vision and ideals of N.F.S.

In 1892, at the invitation of a Danish immigrant who had married a Cherokee woman in what was then Indian Territory, the Danish Lutheran Church Association sent a student from Trinity Seminary in Blair, Nebraska, to investigate the possibility of doing mission work among the Cherokee. The student, Niels Laurits Nielsen, returned in the summer of 1893 and began working among the Cherokee, eventually founding a school and a church at Oaks, Oklahoma. The Oaks mission became one of the most important missions of the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church (later the UELC) and continues as an institution …

Nels Christian Nelson, a Danish-American pioneer whom the Curator of the American Museum of Natural History chose "as one of the eight characters who shaped American archaeology"1 was one of them. The Building Of Immanuel Lutheran Church In Kimballton, Iowa, Jeanette Lillehoj

Coming into the small Iowa town of Kimballton from any direction, the spire of Immanuel Lutheran Church, which stands on a high point in the town, is clearly visible. The early Danish immigrants who built this church intended the church spire to be a beacon to those entering the town. The centennial of Immanuel Lutheran Church will be celebrated in 1997. To those Danish immigrants who were responsible for building this church, this article is dedicated.
