"Left to go to America," teacher Johannes Frederik

Christensen wrote opposite Sophie Pauline Christine

Pedersen in the June, 1884 Kindertofte village school's attendance

and examination class register. For Sophie, daughter of

laborer P. Christian Pedersen, as for the other 1,261 emigrants

under sixteen that left Denmark in 1884 with their families,1

her first meeting with education would greatly contribute to

any success in the new country. The Danish school system

and the village teacher would cast long shadows.

I never tire of hearing stories about Danish immigrants coming to America in the 1800' s. Their courage fills me with admiration because few of them would ever see their homeland or families again. My own great-grandparents Jens and Kristine Bagge arrived in June of 1863. Kristine died a few years later leaving five small children behind. We know she was lonely for Denmark.

that lay on the edge of the North Sea in Jutland, Denmark.

When he was four his mother died and his father remarried.

He spent his childhood tending sheep and cattle and playing

in the sand dunes and heather along the sea. He must have

spent much time dreaming his dreams.

This study tested a multivariate model, which included peer influences, religiosity, personality traits, school experiences, and family characteristics, in predicting juvenile delinquency. The model compared two samples of youth belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (L.D.S.). A mail questionnaire and three follow-up mailings were sent to 1,078 youth living in the Pacific Northwest and 1,849 youth living in Utah county. The overall response rate for the sample was 63 percent. Extensive measures were used in assessing the variables included in the model. The following work seeks to address the necessity that the inhabitants of the impoverished regions in Bolivia experience, as is the case of the highland region of Paceno, which is the understanding of their nutritional and alimentary situation. We studied the communities of Canavari, Pocohata, Colina Blanca, Puente Arriba, and Villa Arriendo de la Provincia Ingavi, in the province of la Paz.

A Study Of Haitian Mormon Converts Dwelling In New York City: A Cross-Cultural Perspective In Understanding, Interpreting, And Experiencing The Mormon Subculture, Yvon Milien

This thesis examines the roles played by understanding, interpretation of practices, and experience in Mormon culture when Haitians convert to Mormonism. In relationship to their previous cultural practices, this thesis explores whether Haitian converts develop one of three types of behaviors: discard old practices, retain elements of old practices, or seek to establish a balance between former and new religious practices. In-depth interviews with twelve subjects living in New York City suggest that most active converts discarded their old cultural traditions. This study suggests that only interpretation influences developing types of behavior. However, it was not expected that most converts …

We used data from the screening phase and first two waves of a panel study to compare the home environments of families with a substance-abusing parent, families with a depressed parent, and families in a comparison group. We diagnosed substance use disorder and affective disorder by administering the Structural Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (third edition, revised) to each participating parent. The data suggest that families in which parents display a substance use disorder are very similar to those in which parents suffer from affective disorder, in terms of negative life events and lower …

This research focuses on the empowering experiences of LDS women within the patriarchal structure as organized by the LDS church. Women in the LDS church empower themselves by drawing both external and internal resources. The degree of flexibility that leaders and member of the LDS church adopt externally influences the degree of empowerment that LDS women. The more internal factors an LDS woman adopts the greater her internal sense of empowerment.

Study Of Livestock Production Levels In Three Communities Near The City Of Riobamba, Raul Rolando Nuñez Lopez

This study was done by administering household surveys to 50% of the families in the three communities. Families were selected through stratified random sampling. This allowed us to determine how much families are exploiting species that have a significant level of production as well as whether they use them for a commercial activity or subsistence. With regard to cows, 60.40 ± 4.72% of families use them. Each family has an average of 1.68 ± 0.21 cows. Productive cows make up 36.9% of the above percentage, which is a majority. The measured rate of production was 6.48 ± 0.25 L/cow/day. Overall, …

The federal government owns and controls more than 4 7 percent of the land in the Western United States'. The Interior department has jurisdiction over approximately 450 million acres, most of it used primarily for livestock grazing and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The federal forests, managed by the Forest Service in the Department of Agriculture, contain about 325 million acres and include some of the prime timbergrowing lands in the world. As a result of the dramatic increase in women's participation in the work force, more relationship therapists are seeing couples who are dissatisfied with how domestic labor is divided in their homes. Although, this issue may seem therapeutically straightforward, there are many aspects which make its renegotiation surprisingly problematic and complex. This article is an effort to delineate some of these issues such as engaging men in therapy, exploring emotional issues connected with housework, and the mechanism of gatekeeping. Also included is a therapeutic framework for addressing client concerns about domestic responsibilities.

intricate patterns with knitting needles, scissors, hammer

and anvil, Danish-American folklife includes any form of

knowledge or skill that is learned by observation or imitation

within a community context (Hansen 1988:23)

few settled in the cities, others moved on to the lumber

forests of Michigan and Wisconsin while more made their

destination the fertile farmlands of the midwest. A few of

the even more adventurous crossed the country or made

the long sail around the Straits of Magellan to California.

Those of us who grew up in the Danish-American

colonies of the 30' s and 40' s experienced a life that has

now disappeared. It was a rich and unique life. It was a

time of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation immigrants adjusting

to the American culture and at the same time cherishing

their particular brand of Danish heritage.
