Ivon Arroyo

We present the results of a deep formaive evaluation of AnimalWatch, an intelligent tutor for arithmetic. Students leamed with AnimalWatch, and had a poscive experience with it. Still, we detailed AnimalWatch selected too easy problems. We proposed different hypotheses for this beha* ior and analyzed the performance of each ITS component, by observing the intarctiorrs of hundreds of students with the system. A Role Of The Basal Ganglia In Movement: The Effect Of Precues On Discrete Bi-Directional Movements In Parkinson's Disease, Andrew Johnson, Philip Vernon, Quincy Almeida, Linda Grantier, Mandar Jog

Andrew M. Johnson

The effect of a precue on improving movement initiation (i.e., reaction time; RT) is well understood, whereas its influence on movement execution (i.e., movement time; MT) has rarely been examined. The current study investigated the influence of a directional precue (i.e., left vs. right) on the RT and MT of simple and discrete bi-directional movements in a large sample of Parkinson's disease patients and healthy control participants. Both patients and controls were tested twice, with testing sessions separated by 2 hours. Patients were tested first following an overnight levodopa withdrawal and again after they had taken their medication. Both patients …

Information-Seeking Habits Of Environmental Scientists: A Study Of Interdisciplinary Scientists At The Environmental Protection Agency In Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, Janet Crane

Janet M Crane

This study describes a questionnaire survey of interdisciplinary scientists conducting research at The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The survey was conducted to gain a clearer picture of how the interdisciplinary scientist seeks information, and in particular how the interdisciplinary scientist manages his/her time in regard to information-gathering tasks. Results indicate that many participants have at least some difficulty in keeping up with research in their field(s) of study in regard to time. As a result, many participants do at least some of their information-gathering in their off-time or delegate certain research responsibilities to …

Thoughts On American Manufacturing Decline And Revitalization, Timothy Bartik Dec 2002

Thoughts On American Manufacturing Decline And Revitalization, Timothy Bartik

Timothy J. Bartik

The recent decline in American manufacturing probably reflects long-run problems. A sensible approach to revitalizing American manufacturing would focus on overcoming inefficiencies in the development of manufacturing, such as problems in small- and medium-sized manufacturers getting information about deploying new technologies. This approach to revitalizing manufacturing can best be implemented through federal efforts to encourage and support state and local economic development policies that help enhance manufacturing productivity. A decentralized approach to the revitalization of manufacturing encourages a variety of creative policies, is adaptable to local conditions, and is consistent with American political traditions.

Cost-Of-Living Calculators On The Web: An Empirical Snapshot, Joseph Zumalt, Rebecca Smith, Yoo-Seong Song Dec 2002

Cost-Of-Living Calculators On The Web: An Empirical Snapshot, Joseph Zumalt, Rebecca Smith, Yoo-Seong Song

Joseph R. Zumalt

Employment-related resources have always been a vital part of the reference collection in academic and public libraries. To assist job seekers, the Web is now presenting free and interesting opportunities for collecting cost-of-living data. However, librarians need to be advised of their relevance and reliability. This article looks at four well-known salary and/or cost-of-living calculator commercial Web sites: Homestore.com, Monstermoving.com, BestPlaces.net, and Salary.com. The Web sites are compared in terms of value-added content. By presenting the potential salary differences of a hypothetical relocation from one U.S city to twenty-six other U.S. cities, this study identifies the anomalies found when using …

Nonstandard Work In Developed Economies: Causes And Consequences, Susan Houseman, Machiko Osawa Dec 2002

Nonstandard Work In Developed Economies: Causes And Consequences, Susan Houseman, Machiko Osawa

Susan N. Houseman

This book reveals the considerable variation in the levels of growth in a broad set of nonstandard work arrangements while presenting a comprehensive view of how, as a result, the nature of the employment relationship is changing within and among countries. The international roster of economists, sociologists, and labor law experts who contributed draw on cross-country variations in economic conditions and institutional characteristics to explain why some arrangements have grown faster in some countries than in others and what this means for workers. By considering a broad array of nonstandard work arrangements in a number of economies, the authors provide …

Teaching Students About Classic Findings On The Detection Of Deception, Kathryn Morris Dec 2002

Teaching Students About Classic Findings On The Detection Of Deception, Kathryn Morris

Kathryn A. Morris

I describe a classroom exercise that demonstrates people's inability to detect deception better than chance. In the exercise, students worked in pairs and took turns asking each other a series of questions. Students lied to their partners some of the time, and they in turn attempted to determine when their partners lied to them. Students also reported their degree of confidence in their lie detection abilities. The results consistently replicated classic findings in this area of research. In addition, students who participated in this exercise retained the knowledge gained from their participation for 6 to 30 months. I discuss the …

Regulation Of Preventive And Premptive Use Of Force In The United Nations Charter: A Search For Original Intent, Timothy Kearley Dec 2002

Regulation Of Preventive And Premptive Use Of Force In The United Nations Charter: A Search For Original Intent, Timothy Kearley

Timothy G. Kearley

This article investigates whether the drafters of the United Nations Charter intended to permit a state to use force in self defense, either preventatively or preemptively, before that state has been the victim of an armed attack. It makes extensive use of a source not much used previously--the volume in the Foreign Relations of the United States series that includes the minutes of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. Conference on International Organization at which the Charter was drafted, and in which the U.S. delegation played a key role in drafting Article 51, the self defense provision.
