Returning To The America That Was Meant To Be: The Cinematic Re-Emergence Of Baseball’S Vision Of Community, Robert Rudd, Marshall Most Dec 2002

Returning To The America That Was Meant To Be: The Cinematic Re-Emergence Of Baseball’S Vision Of Community, Robert Rudd, Marshall Most

Robert L. Rudd

In 1984, an aging slugger by the name of Roy Hobbs captured the imaginations of movie-goers across America. Today, over 25 years later, Barry Levinson's The Natural (1984) remains one of the most popular baseball films ever. As it turns out, however, Levinson's popular portrayal of the New York Knights' enigmatic superstar was only the beginning. The Natural marked the beginning resurgence in the baseball film genre that was to last through the end of the 20th century. It wasn't just Robert Redford as the quiet, troubled, mythic hero who was popular. The themes of baseball itself -- at least …

Institutionalizing Diversity: Living And Learning Communities At Occidental College, Eric Newhall, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Jonathan Nakamoto, Brandon Carroll Dec 2002

Institutionalizing Diversity: Living And Learning Communities At Occidental College, Eric Newhall, Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman, Jonathan Nakamoto, Brandon Carroll

Andrea Hopmeyer Gorman

At Occidental College we believe an effective strategy for institutionalizing diversity in the midst of ongoing national “culture wars” is to adopt educational models and practices that nurture and sustain diversities of all kinds, while simultaneously helping our undergraduates to strengthen their skills in critical thinking, expository writing, and public speaking. Furthermore, we see no need to choose between the twin goals of our college mission—excellence and equity. We consider these two goals to be inextricably intertwined. Because many U.S. students are reared and educated in isolated racial enclaves, we need educational models and practices that interrupt and reverse this …

“Policing The Police,” Review Of Are Cops Racist?, By H. Mac Donald, Kenneth Colburn Dec 2002

“Policing The Police,” Review Of Are Cops Racist?, By H. Mac Donald, Kenneth Colburn

Kenneth D. Colburn

Law enforcement officers are an ever-present target for criticism. There are exceptions, of course: praise was widespread and heartfelt throughout the nation for the selfless sacrifice of New York City police officers (and firefighters) who died in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. As every police officer knows, however, the police are more likely to be the subjects of criticism than of praise. There are some obvious and some less than obvious reasons for the basic ambivalence Americans have toward the police.

Does The Effect Of Familial Disruption On Delinquency Vary According To Circumstances? An Investigation Of Interaction Effects, Christopher Kierkus, Douglas Baer Dec 2002

Does The Effect Of Familial Disruption On Delinquency Vary According To Circumstances? An Investigation Of Interaction Effects, Christopher Kierkus, Douglas Baer

Christopher A. Kierkus

Empirical research has shown that familial disruption is associated with delinquent behavior. Recent investigations suggest that reduced levels of attachment in non-traditional families may be responsible for this effect. However, it is not known if the impact of familial disruption varies according to familial SES or the gender of the children. Some authors have argued that the criminogenic influence is greater for boys while others have maintained that girls are more adversely influenced. Similar contradictory evidence has been reported with respect to SES. Finally, a substantial number of studies have shown that the influence of familial disruption is largely invariant …

Historical Research As Critical Practice And Relationship: The "Carnegie Libraries In Iowa Project, James Elmborg, Christine Pawley Dec 2002

Historical Research As Critical Practice And Relationship: The "Carnegie Libraries In Iowa Project, James Elmborg, Christine Pawley

James K. Elmborg

The Carnegie Libraries in Iowa Project (CLIP) is an interdisciplinary project that seeks to chart the history of Iowa's Carnegie libraries by creating a digital library of images and other documentary and statistical information to be made publicly available over the World Wide Web. Using CLIP as a starting point, and by using critical methods to analyze the records from sociological, historical, architectural, aesthetic, and technical perspectives, library users ranging from humanities scholars to school children are encouraged to study the history of Iowa's Carnegie libraries in the context of their changing communities. CLIP represents a partnership among faculty, students, …

Public Perceptions Of Genetically Modified Foods: A National Study Of American Knowledge And Opinion., William Hallman, W. Hebden, Helen Aquino, Cara Cuite, John Lang

John T. Lang

The report begins with an investigation of Americans’ awareness of the presence of genetically modified (GM) ingredients in the foods they encounter everyday. Next, the report describes Americans’ actual and perceived knowledge of science, biotechnology and food production. It then examines American opinions about GM foods in general, along with their opinions on a variety of existing and potential GM food products with direct or indirect consumer benefits. The report discusses the relationship between opinions of GM food and a variety of factors, including demographics, knowledge of biotechnology, purchasing behaviors and styles of food selection. Finally, it describes Americans’ thoughts …

The Effects Of Interdisciplinary Instruction On Simulation Performance”. Simulation And Gaming, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Deborah Skinner, Clark A. Dec 2002

The Effects Of Interdisciplinary Instruction On Simulation Performance”. Simulation And Gaming, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Deborah Skinner, Clark A.

Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde

Simulations are often used in business courses to expose students to real-world decision making. This study examines the implications of specific subject matter intervention by faculty members in economics and marketing on the choices made by students and the consequences of those choices in an online finance simulation. The findings, although mixed, suggest that an interdisciplinary intervention in an online finance simulation has the potential to improve the quality of decisions made and, consequently, overall student performance, especially when intervention material is new to the students.

The Iron Law Of Selfishness: Response To A Comment By Alexander Field, Ted Bergstrom Dec 2002

The Iron Law Of Selfishness: Response To A Comment By Alexander Field, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

Alexander Field was not convinced of a result that I claimed in my JEP 2001 paper that in "haystack models" with non-assortative mating, if the number of descendants of founding group members is determined by an n-player prisoners' dilemma game, then the population will converge to a population of defectors. He thought that the result applied only if the groups were large. I respond with a more detailed discussion and show how the result works even when groups have only two members.

"She Says, He Says”: Women’S And Men’S Views Of The Composition Of Boards, Alison Sheridan, Gina Milgate Dec 2002

"She Says, He Says”: Women’S And Men’S Views Of The Composition Of Boards, Alison Sheridan, Gina Milgate

Gina C Milgate

While women have continued to increase their representation in the paid workforce, their representation on corporate boards in Australia remains very low. In this paper, the views of men and women board members of publicly-listed companies in Australia concerning the adequacy of the composition of boards and the factors contributing to women’s low representation are explored and contrasted. It seems that these “successful” men and women have significantly different views on the benefits of homogeneity or diversity of board membership. While the men believe the current composition is generally adequate, the women are concerned about the lack of diversity of …

Partner Violence And Major Depression In Women: A Community Study Of Chinese Americans., M Hicks, Z Lee Dec 2002

Partner Violence And Major Depression In Women: A Community Study Of Chinese Americans., M Hicks, Z Lee

Madelyn Hsiao-Rei Hicks

This cross-sectional, retrospective study used epidemiological and anthropological methods toward two aims: 1) to examine associations between partner violence and major depression in a community probability sample of women and 2) to provide new data on partner violence in Chinese Americans. In this study, 181 Chinese American women were interviewed, with 178 completing structured sections on CIDI 2.1 major depression and on partner violence history. Results indicate that a history of partner violence is associated with significantly higher rates of lifetime, 12-month, and current major depression in this community population. This effect is specific and independent of other factors. Partner …

Web Citation Availability: Analysis And Implications For Scholarship, Mary Casserly, James Bird Dec 2002

Web Citation Availability: Analysis And Implications For Scholarship, Mary Casserly, James Bird

James E Bird

Five hundred citations to Internet resources from articles published in library and information science journals in 1999 and 2000 were profiled and searched on the Web. The majority contained partial bibliographic information and no date viewed. Most URLs pointed to content pages with “edu” or “org” domains and did not include a tilde. More than half (56.4%) were permanent, 81.4 percent were available on the Web, and searching the Internet Archive increased the availability rate to 89.2 percent. Content, domain, and directory depth were associated with availability. Few of the journals provided instruction on citing digital resources. Eight suggestions for …

Does Trade Liberalization Make The Porter Hypothesis Less Relevant?, Neil Campbell Dec 2002

Does Trade Liberalization Make The Porter Hypothesis Less Relevant?, Neil Campbell

Neil Campbell

The Porter Hypothesis refers to the idea that environmental regulations push firms into developing and adopting new technologies. Controversially, it asserts that the investments in new technology that the firms are pushed into making would be profitable irrespective of whether the regulations had have been put in place. In this paper a simple model is used to illustrate a Porter Hypothesis situation. This framework allows us to establish what conditions are required for a tariff reduction to be an alternative to environmental regulations. That is, we look at a case where, under tariff protection, the firm will only invest in …
