Between March and May, 1965, 1112 families residing in nineteen census tracts in the City of Omaha were interviewed through the facilities of the Urban Studies Center of the Municipal University of Omaha with respect to various characteristics of their income, composition, and opinion as these items related to understanding the status of the econornica1ly underprivileged in their neighborhoods. The purpose of these interviews was to facilitate preparation of a community action program in Omaha capable of attacking some of the root causes of poverty and improving the conditions, present and future, of those families who were its victims. In the summer of 1966 the racial conflict in the U.S.A. saw a new polarization. The most militant groups in the "Negro Revolt" joined in a call for "Black Power", a call that emerged on the Mississippi march in July; for them; "Black power" has succeeded the former slogan of "Freedom Now". The concept of Black Power is not, however, a completely new phenomenon. "It has grown out of the ferment of agitation and activity by different people and organizations in many black communities over the years."

The Reference Groups For Educational Achievement Among Culturally Deprived Junior High School Students: A Theoretical Discussion And Preliminary Data Review, Theodore L. Reed

As introduction we have chosen to focus primarily on two issues encountered in the definition of the scope of the study. In chapter one the contributions and limitations of theory and research in the field of social stratification are reviewed. The synthesis of this chapter leads to a more general discussion of assumptions in the second part of the introduction. The postulates which are reviewed define both the philosophical biases and the level of generalization at which conclusions may be accepted.
