He was one of the great architects of the Protestant world. He appeared on the world scene as President of the United Lutheran Church in America in 1944, at the beginning of the post-war era. Fifty-two of the eighty black clergymen of the three major Lutheran church bodies met in Chicago, May 7 to 10, to discuss problems common to their ministry and evolve a strategy for helping the church through the years ahead.

After meeting in closed assembly for a day and a half, the pastors opened sessions to white church leaders to share concerns with them. On hand also for the consultation were the presidents of the ALC, Mo. Synod, and LCA, Doctors Schiotz, Harms and Fry.

All that God has prepared for and wills to give to man may be summarized in these two words: heaven and earth.

In this connection, "heaven" is the divine, unmerited favor of God which includes the eradication of just judgment upon sin, man's restoration to sonship in and acceptance by God, and the hope of a resurrection from death to eternal life through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
