Kinship And Community Among Some Black Families In Oberlin, Michael Bobker Jan 1977

Kinship And Community Among Some Black Families In Oberlin, Michael Bobker

Honors Papers

The problem I set out to examine is that of the nature and use of kinship ties among Black people in Oberlin. Kinship, though we often assume -it to be a biological fact, is, in reality, cultural. Like another cultural fact, language common to all humans but· having different rules in different places, kinship is a human trait that in its cultural malleability may be organized variously. Specifically, then, what kinship ties do exist among Oberlin's Black population? Since kinship ties can be an important influence on the way people relate to one another, precisely how are these ties perceived …

Societal Reaction To Deviants: The Case Of Criminal Defendants, Ilene Nagel Bernstein, William R. Kelly, Patricia A. Doyle Jan 1977

Societal Reaction To Deviants: The Case Of Criminal Defendants, Ilene Nagel Bernstein, William R. Kelly, Patricia A. Doyle

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Recent reformulations of the societal reaction theory argue that the thesis is a perspective rather than a theory, and that the perspective is meant to provide a set of sensitizing concepts to those researching deviance. This research examines the degree of congruence between hypotheses deduced from those assertions and a set of real world occurrences. Data for a sample of male defendants charged with felony offenses are examined to estimate the effects of (1) deviants' social attributes, (2) the specific societal reactors, (3) the values placed on certain offenses and (4) the organizational imperatives of the deviance-controlling organization, controlling for …

Motivational Factors Behind Repetitive Abortions, Kelly Osmont, Ellen Wolfford Jan 1977

Motivational Factors Behind Repetitive Abortions, Kelly Osmont, Ellen Wolfford

Dissertations and Theses

This practicum intends to explore the motivational factors behind repeat abortions. The underlying assumptions of this study include: (1) women have abortions; (2) women have repeat abortions. Based on these assumptions, the two research questions are (1) are there significant factors in the causation of repeat abortions, and (2) what are the implications regarding the lack of information and service to women which have a direct relationship to repeat abortions.

Social Impact Assessment At The Neighborhood Level, William H. Triest Jan 1977

Social Impact Assessment At The Neighborhood Level, William H. Triest

Dissertations and Theses

This paper originated as a result of one of the stated objectives of the Salem Primary Prevention Project. That project, operating jointly with Marion County Community Mental Health, Salem School District 24J and the City of Salem’s Community Development Department, has had as one of its stated objectives, the development of a mechanism to review the impact of planned change at the local level.

For several years both the staff and Advisory Committee for the Primary Prevention Program had wrestled with the complexity of developing such a review or assessment mechanism. Existing literature on social impact assessment appeared to deal …

An Investigation Of The Combined Effect Of Agency Support And Professional Social Workers' Training On The Type Of Family Therapy Practiced By Agency-Based Social Workers, Betsy Marsh Mccartor, Margaret Labby Jan 1977

An Investigation Of The Combined Effect Of Agency Support And Professional Social Workers' Training On The Type Of Family Therapy Practiced By Agency-Based Social Workers, Betsy Marsh Mccartor, Margaret Labby

Dissertations and Theses

All persons are born into some form of family unit. The traditional family is a unit of people who live together over periods of time and have ties of marriage and kinship. Even if that unit is separated, as in death or adoption, qualities of one's personhood are closely connected with forebears and parents. Whether for good or bad, the family profoundly affects the individual.

The family is an important unit. Many stresses impinge upon it. The church and extended family are less influential on the family today. The school is less influential. Where does the family turn for support? …

A Descriptive Study Of The Pragmatic Issues In Obtaining An Abortion Among Sixty-Five Women At Lovejoy Specialty Hospital, Portland, Oregon, Barbara E. Bordner, Wendy Green, Susie Milberg

Dissertations and Theses

In view of the current diversity of public opinion concerning the legalization of abortion in this country, it appears timely that a study of the pragmatic issues faced in obtaining an abortion be undertaken. The researchers see this as a step toward narrowing the lag between the enactment of the abortion law and the delivery of services that allow the right of abortion to be an accessible choice for women.

There has been a change in public opinion, regarding the right of abortion, only recently. In 1960, a public opinion poll showed that fewer than 15 percent of the population …

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Economic Status in Midcontinent Metropolitan Areas, Third Quarter 1976," by Ralph H. Todd.

During the third quarter of 1976, Midcontinent metropolitan areas experienced the most universal decline in unemployment rates since the monitoring system was initiated for the fourth quarter of 1975. September unemployment rates in all 25 areas were lower than the United States rate, which declined from 8.1 percent during September of 1975 to 7.4 during September of 1976. Only Fargo, Rapid City and Cheyenne experienced unemployment rates higher than during September of 1975. The increase in average weekly …

On Political Tolerance: Comments On "Origins Of Tolerance", Harry J. Crockett Dec 1976

On Political Tolerance: Comments On "Origins Of Tolerance", Harry J. Crockett

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The continued scalability of a set of attitude items used in national sample surveys separated by 19 years is a remarkable and useful result. In a discipline lacking valid measures of socially important attitudes, such an outcome merits close study and wide dissemination. But exhibiting the stability of Stouffer's tolerance scale is not the prime end of the Williams et al. paper; they pursue an accounting of the "origins of tolerance." Nor is it the prime interest of the larger research from which their paper arises. Our concern in the larger study is with the political tolerance of the American …

"Origins Of Tolerance": Reply To Crockett, J. Allen Williams Jr., Clyde Z. Nunn, Louis St. Peter

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Professor Crockett has described portions of our article as "conceptually barren" and the findings are said to represent "serious distortions" which, if accepted, will lead to "serious misunderstandings." Coming from a respected colleague, these strong words cannot be taken lightly. Nevertheless, after carefully examining his criticisms, we feel they are misplaced.

Origins Of Tolerance: Findings From A Replication Of Stouffer's Communism, Conformity, And Civil Liberties, J. Allen Williams Jr., Clyde Z. Nunn, Louis St. Peter

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This report presents findings from a nationwide replication of Stouffer's classic study of attitudes toward civil liberties. Central to Stouffer's interpretation of the origins of tolerance is his idea that exposure to social and cultural diversity encourages an appreciation of the importance of civil liberties for democracy. Trends in the 1950s suggested that Americans would increasingly be exposed to diversity with the result that the population would become more tolerant in the future. These propositions were examined using education, city size, region, exposure to mass media news, gender, and occupation as indices of exposure to diversity. With the exceptions of …
