Occupational Prestige In An Urbanized Appalachian Region : A Comparison Of Huntington-Ashland Urbanized Area With The United States, Barbara A. Thorniley
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
There has been a long and continuous sociological interest in the area of the social status of occupations. Numerous attempts have been made to discern a social stratification structure in which differences in. the social status of occupations define the social strata. Indeed, nearly seventy years of empirical research has been responsible for volumes of published literature.
A relatively large number of criteria are used in attempts to define the social status of occupations, among which are the differences in the perceived prestige assigned to the occupations. Prestige is seen as a type of social status which encompasses social recognition, …

Organizations And Expertise In China, Rudi Volti
Organizations And Expertise In China, Rudi Volti
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
A number of analyses of contemporary Chinese society have centered on the presumed conflicts between politically reliable "reds" and technically proficient "experts." This article challenges this mode of analysis by indicating the multi-dimensionality of both categories and by setting them in their historic and cultural contexts. Particular emphasis is accorded to the importance of organizational affiliation in defining the social role of the expert. A short history of the interaction between organizational development and the role of the expert is presented, along with some considerations of future trends in this area.

Self-Esteem And The Elderly : An Exploratory Study Of A Residential Population In A Home For The Aged, Vernon E. Hoffer
Dissertations and Theses
The two primary purposes of this exploratory study were (1) to establish the theoretical tenability of focusing on the maintenance of self-esteem as a means for enhancing the quality of life in the institutionalized elderly, and (2) to identify factors related to self-esteem in a home for the aged sample.
Literature reviewed relative to the importance of self-esteem, its development, and its maintenance or change indicated that (1) self-esteem is related to personal satisfaction and effective social functioning: (2) self-esteem develops and is maintained or changed as a function of factors in an individual’s immediate interpersonal environment; and (3) institutionalization …

Dissertations and Theses
Originally, the focus of this project was to be a policy analysis and survey of the new procedures and regulations established by the state of Oregon for the protection and management of nursing home residents' Personal Incidental Funds (PIF). The analysis was to be divided into four phases, according to a pre-planned timetable. The last phase was to be a field survey of the policy's impact upon nursing homes and adult service workers. Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers
Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers
Masters Theses
The present study was designed to determine whether physical distance between male and female interviewees and a female interviewer affected verbal productivity and anxiety level when interviewees discussed academic, social, and personal topics. The interview was conceptualized as an information-gathering interview. Crucial variables in such interviews are client participation and information flow. Client verbal productivity appears to be directly related to these variables, and was used as one dependent variable to measure the impact of distance on interviewee verbal behavior. A self-report measure of anxiety, the Fear Thermometer was used as a second dependent variable.
The experimental distances used in …

Some Determinants Of Productivity, Allen Blitstein
Some Determinants Of Productivity, Allen Blitstein
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This study tests the effects of several variables on value productivity in manufacturing. Changes in human capital seem to have a greater impact on production worker output than do changes in physical capital. Industries which exhibit a high degree of employment instability tend to have tower value productivity than do industries with relatively stable employment. This finding supports the "learning curve'; hypothesis.
Capacity utilization was found to be inversely associated with worker output. The degree of unionism in an industry, number of hours worked, presence of female workers, and industry wholesale price levels were found to be insignificant factors in …
