Science Sojourners: The (Un)Making Of Women Scientists From China To America, Jane Jia-Yin Wang

Science is often imagined as a borderless profession in which knowledge, careers, and talent circulate freely across national boundaries. Yet scientific careers remain embedded within institutions that correspond to immigration regimes, geopolitical tensions, and unequal social structures. Drawing on 32 in-depth interviews with early-career Chinese women scientists trained in the U.S., this dissertation examines how globally mobile scientists navigate decisions about careers, migration, and everyday life between China and the U.S.

The aim of this dissertation is to identify differences in the mobility process and residential attainment across different types of renters with different incomes and by housing subsidy status. More specifically, I compare subsidized renters to unsubsidized, low-income renters as well as unsubsidized, moderate-income renters. The guiding question of this dissertation is, “what processes around mobility help or hinder subsidized households in attaining residential outcomes?” The motivations for addressing this question and the related gaps in the literature are discussed in Chapter 1.

As many jurisdictions across the United States seek to reduce their prison populations, a pressing question is whether the public will support the reforms necessary to do so. Public openness to reform likely varies across policy areas, with the path of least public resistance occurring where attitudes are the most malleable and loosely held. A major challenge, however, is that traditional methods for measuring public opinion are poorly suited to identifying which policy areas are characterized by such weakly held views.

Black women in the U.S. continue to experience disproportionately high rates of unintended pregnancies, with a 64% rate reported in 2011 (Finer & Zolna, 2016). Positive sexual self-concept (SSC) is linked to healthier sexual behaviors, yet research on SSC development has largely overlooked the role of fathers and systemic influences, particularly within Black families. Grounded in an ecological framework, this study examines the impact of father-daughter engagement on SSC among Black female adolescents, considering paternal residential status and socioeconomic class as key contextual factors. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who also identify as sexual and gender minorities (SGM) may experience intersecting challenges related to communication, social belonging, masking, identity development, and access to affirming clinical spaces. Although role-play and therapeutically applied role-playing games (TA-RPGs) have been described as promising experiential approaches, limited research has examined how ASD/SGM individuals themselves understand role-playing games (RPGs) or evaluate their possible therapeutic use. The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for emotional support underscores the need to understand how cultural perceptions shape their adoption among international African students in higher education institutions in the United States. Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Social Stigma Theory, this qualitative study explored the perceptions, motivations, and barriers influencing the use of AI chatbots for emotional support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 undergraduate and graduate students from 10 African countries. Remote work has become increasingly accessible due to the growing acceptance of remote work arrangements following the COVID-19 pandemic. Some state actors, especially in countries which face a shortage of digital talent and have reputations as leisure-tourism destinations, have begun considering the opportunities for digital transformation or workforce upskilling that highly skilled remote workers may offer. This paper develops the case of remote workers in Thailand to argue that infrastructural stickiness is a critical determinant for effective knowledge transfer to occur. This paper uses karlup bidi (pathway home) as a metaphor to show and explain the cultural landscape of a significant central Perth locality: Kaart Gennunginyup Bo, or Karrgatup, or Kaarta Koomba, also known as King’s Park. Drawing on oral histories, cultural narratives and contemporary reflections, the study uses Noongar understandings of Country, family, time and relationship to challenge and decolonise Western paradigms of land use and identity. This article examines diasporic challenges, domestic abuse and patriarchal ideologies that constitute unique diasporic lives of first-generation migrant married Pakistani women (MPW) in Australia. For this qualitative study, 21 MPW residing in Australia were recruited for semi-structured in-depth interviews. Results from the interpretative phenomenological analysis of data revealed the diasporic encounters MPW face in Australia and the influence of patriarchal ideology on their lives in navigating those encounters. MPW’s responses to patriarchal norms in their married lives fell on a spectrum, which include conformation to the norms of patriarchal familial structures on the one side and resistance and bargaining against …

บทความชิ้นนี้ศึกษากลไกการปรับตัวทางเศรษฐกิจและการเมืองของสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาวภายหลังยุคสังคมนิยม โดยมุ่งเน้นการอธิบาย “ภาคแสดงของกลไกการปรับตัว” ผ่านแนวคิดการประกอบร่วม (Assemblage) การอธิบายกลไกดังกล่าวศึกษาด้วยวิธีการเชิงชาติพันธุ์วรรณนา (Ethnography) จากการเดินทางร่วมกับรถบรรทุกน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงข้ามพรมแดนไทย-ลาว ผ่านสะพานมิตรภาพไทย-ลาวแห่งที่ 1 และ 2 เพื่อสำรวจกลไกที่ประกอบร่วมกันในการดำรงอยู่ของรัฐสังคมนิยมลาว ระยะเวลาการเก็บข้อมูลเริ่มตั้งแต่เดือนมกราคม 2567 จนถึงเดือนเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2567 รวมระยะเวลาทั้งสิ้น 2 เดือน ผลการศึกษาชี้ให้เห็นว่า น้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงและสะพานมิตรภาพไทย-ลาวเป็นผู้กระทำ (Actant) สำคัญในภาคแสดงของกลไกการปรับตัวต่อความเป็นรัฐสังคมนิยม งานศึกษานี้เสนอว่า การเข้าใจกลไกการปรับตัวต่อความเป็นรัฐสังคมนิยมจำเป็นต้องพิจารณาการประกอบร่วมจากผู้กระทำอื่นนอกเหนือจากรัฐ ซึ่งช่วยอธิบายความต่อเนื่องของการคงความเป็นสังคมนิยมของสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว

Thailand’S Alignment Strategy Amidst The Us-China Rivalry : A Role Theory Perspective, Wen Chou Han

This paper seeks to analyze how Thailand, as a middle power, navigates its alignment choices amid an intensifying US-China rivalry in the Asia-Pacific region through the lens of role theory. This paper also proposes several original mechanisms to operationalize the role theory in the analysis of Thailand’s strategy. To this end, Thailand’s foreign policy from the past decade (2012 to mid-2025) will be reviewed. The central argument is that Thailand is adopting a “soft hedging” strategy marked by opportunism and driven by its key goal of development, but is, at the same time, complicated by domestic political dysfunction (“fragmented centralism”). …

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาบริบทฐานทุนและเศรษฐกิจชุมชนในสิงหนคร 2) วิเคราะห์และสังเคราะห์กระบวนการเรียนรู้โดยชุมชนท้องถิ่นเป็นฐาน (Community-based learning : CBL) และ 3) สังเคราะห์ผลลัพธ์ของกระบวนการเรียนรู้และจัดทำข้อเสนอแนะเชิงนโยบายและแบบจำลองการพัฒนาเพื่อยกระดับและสร้างคุณค่าทางเศรษฐกิจจากฐานทุนในพื้นที่อย่างยั่งยืน โดยศึกษาพื้นที่ชุมชนเทศบาลเมืองสิงหนคร จังหวัดสงขลา ใช้วิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative research) แบบการวิจัยเชิงปฏิบัติการแบบมีส่วนร่วม (Participatory action research : PAR) กลุ่มผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ ได้แก่ เทศบาลเมืองสิงหนคร กรมศิลปากร สำนักศิลปากรที่ 11 สงขลา เครือข่ายการศึกษาในพื้นที่ กลุ่มสตรี ผู้สูงอายุ กลุ่มวิสาหกิจชุมชน เกษตรกร ชาวประมง ผู้ประกอบการธุรกิจรายย่อยในพื้นที่ และกลุ่มภาคีต่าง ๆ

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ทุนทางทรัพยากรและเศรษฐกิจที่สำคัญ ได้แก่ ผลิตภัณฑ์สิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์ (GI) 3 รายการ คือ ปลากะพงสามน้ำ มะม่วงเบาสงขลา และไข่ครอบสงขลา ทรัพยากรในทะเลสาบสงขลา การรวมกลุ่มของวิสาหกิจชุมชน เช่น กลุ่มขนมโบราณ กลุ่มผ้ามัดย้อม กลุ่มมะม่วงเบา กลุ่มปลากรอบ ทุนทางวัฒนธรรมและประวัติศาสตร์ที่สำคัญ คือ ประวัติศาสตร์เมืองเก่าสิงหนคร (ซิงกอรา) และทุนทางสังคม คือ วิถีชีวิตคนพุทธ-มุสลิมที่กลมกลืน มีเครือข่ายการศึกษาและกลุ่มอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรชายฝั่ง กระบวนการเรียนรู้ของชุมชนเพื่อการพัฒนาทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมในพื้นที่ เกิดจากความเชื่อมโยงระหว่างภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นกับการได้รับความรู้จากภาครัฐ สถาบันการศึกษา ภาคเอกชน และอาศัยเทคโนโลยีดิจิทัลในการอัปเดตองค์ความรู้ ผลลัพธ์ของกระบวนการเรียนรู้ ได้แก่ การพัฒนาผลิตภัณฑ์ใหม่ 6 ชนิด จำนวนกลุ่มเปราะบางที่ได้รับการพัฒนาทักษะอาชีพ 93 คน กลุ่มวิสาหกิจจำนวน 19 กลุ่ม ที่มีรายได้เพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 10 และพัฒนาพื้นที่การเรียนรู้ จำนวน 5 แห่ง สำหรับข้อเสนอแนะ การวิจัยควรมีการพัฒนาอาชีพเสริม เช่น การทำขนมและการแปรรูปอาหารทะเลที่เชื่อมโยงเรื่องราวประวัติศาสตร์และวิถีชีวิตเข้ากับการออกแบบผลิตภัณฑ์ใหม่ และใช้การตลาดดิจิทัล เพื่อเชื่อมโยงเส้นทางท่องเที่ยวชุมชน ผ่านกลไกการเรียนรู้โดยใช้ฐานทุนในพื้นที่เป็นหลัก

ในปัจจุบัน สถานการณ์อาชญากรรมรุนแรงที่กระทำโดยเด็กและเยาวชนมีแนวโน้มทวีความรุนแรงและเพิ่มสูงขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในเขตกรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งนับเป็นพื้นที่ที่มีอัตราการก่ออาชญากรรมในระดับสูง การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทและหน้าที่ของเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจในกระบวนการบังคับใช้กฎหมาย รวมถึงปัญหาและอุปสรรคที่เกิดขึ้นในการปฏิบัติงาน ตลอดจนแนวทางการเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการบังคับใช้กฎหมายต่อกลุ่มเด็กและเยาวชนผู้กระทำความผิดในคดีอาชญากรรมรุนแรง การวิจัยครั้งนี้ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative research) โดยมีเครื่องมือหลักในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล ได้แก่ การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In-depth interview) กับผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ (Key informants) จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 13 คน ประกอบด้วย เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจ นักจิตวิทยา นักสังคมสงเคราะห์ และพนักงานอัยการ

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจมีบทบาทครอบคลุมกระบวนการทุกขั้นตอน ได้แก่ การป้องกันการกระทำความผิดผ่านโครงการและกิจกรรมเชิงรุก การจับกุมโดยใช้มาตรการที่เหมาะสมกับสภาพจิตใจและพัฒนาการของเด็ก การควบคุมตัวในสถานที่แยกจากผู้กระทำความผิดที่เป็นผู้ใหญ่ และการสอบสวนแบบสหวิชาชีพร่วมกับนักจิตวิทยา นักสังคมสงเคราะห์ และพนักงานอัยการ อย่างไรก็ตาม การวิจัยพบปัญหาสำคัญหลายประการ อาทิ ช่องว่างของบทบัญญัติทางกฎหมายที่เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้ใหญ่แสวงหาประโยชน์จากเด็กและเยาวชน ความซับซ้อนของกระบวนการและข้อจำกัดด้านระยะเวลา การขาดสมรรถนะและความเชี่ยวชาญของบุคลากร ภาวะการขาดแคลนกำลังพลเฉพาะทาง เป็นต้น

การสื่อสารทางการเมืองของนายกเทศมนตรีในการบริหารจัดการอุทกภัย : กรณีศึกษาเทศบาลนครยะลา, ปุญญวันต์ จิตประคอง

บทความวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบและกลยุทธ์การสื่อสารทางการเมืองของนายกเทศมนตรีนครยะลาในการบริหารจัดการอุทกภัย และวิเคราะห์ประสิทธิผลของกลยุทธ์การสื่อสารทางการเมืองที่มีต่อการสร้างการมีส่วนร่วมของประชาชน โดยใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพแบบกรณีศึกษา และเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลผ่านการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้ให้ข้อมูลหลัก 8 คน ประกอบด้วย นายกเทศมนตรีนครยะลา ปลัดเทศบาลนครยะลา หัวหน้าฝ่ายป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัยเทศบาลนครยะลา เจ้าหน้าที่ฝ่ายป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณภัยเทศบาลนครยะลา ผู้รับบริการและผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียในระดับชุมชนและการวิเคราะห์เอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้แก่ แผนการบริหารจัดการอุทกภัย รายงานผลการดำเนินงาน และข้อมูลจากสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ จากนั้นวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาโดยใช้กรอบทฤษฎีการสื่อสารในภาวะวิกฤต แนวคิดการสื่อสารทางการเมือง และแนวคิดการสร้างความยืดหยุ่นของเมือง ผลการศึกษาพบรูปแบบการสื่อสาร 5 ลักษณะ คือ การสื่อสารหลายช่องทางแบบบูรณาการ (ดิจิทัล ช่องทางดั้งเดิม และนวัตกรรม IoT) การสื่อสารแบบเรียลไทม์ 3 ระยะ มีการแจ้งล่วงหน้า 8 ชั่วโมง การจัดวางตำแหน่งของเทศบาลเป็นศูนย์กลางข้อมูลที่สามารถชี้แจงต่อสาธารณะ และมีการเปิดเผยข้อมูล ผ่านกลไกต่าง ๆ ประกอบด้วย สภากาแฟ การดูงาน และการประสานผู้ช่วยชุมชน 44 คน และการสร้างเครือข่าย Win-Win กับองค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น 20 แห่ง ส่งผลให้เกิดผลสัมฤทธิ์ที่สำคัญ 4 ด้าน ประกอบด้วย การเพิ่มการมีส่วนร่วม (ตัวแทนครัวเรือน 10,000 จาก 25,000 ครัวเรือน อาสาสมัคร 176 คน) การสร้างความไว้วางใจที่สั่งสม 20-21 ปี การเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการรับมือภัยพิบัติ (ตอบสนองรวดเร็วกว่าหน่วยงานอื่น) และการพัฒนานวัตกรรมอย่างต่อเนื่อง ทั้งนี้ องค์ประกอบของความสำเร็จเกิดขึ้นมาจากความโปร่งใสและการแสดงให้เห็นการทำงานจริง การเปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนมีส่วนในการตัดสินใจ การคัดเลือกตัวแทนแต่ละหมู่บ้าน การแก้ปัญหาข้ามเขตตามหลักการ Win-Win และบารมีของผู้บริหารที่สั่งสมมา ซึ่งคุณลักษณะดังกล่าวสามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการพัฒนากระบวนการบริหารจัดการภัยพิบัติในพื้นที่อื่น ๆ ได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ

This article explores how community and civil society actors in mining conflicts strategically engage with legal and technical vocabularies to assert legitimacy, contest exclusion, and influence mining governance. Drawing on an empirical case study of Thailand’s Chatree gold mine, the article analyzes how affected groups navigate overlapping normative systems, such as state law, transnational norms, and technocratic discourses, through informal learning and strategic appropriation of expert language. Framed through the conceptual lens of legal pluralism, the study highlights how actors interpret and mobilize diverse normative orders to articulate grievances, shape narratives, and attempt to gain access to decision-making spaces. This issue of Current Sociology Monographs explores new conceptual opportunities at the intersection of migration studies and the sociology of class. The contributions examine migration as a distinct site where class is translated and transformed, using rich, empirically specific cases to show how social class is experienced and produced relationally, transnationally and temporally through the lives of migrants. Christian religion may be a powerful resource that can serve as a coping mechanism to resolve challenges and provide comfort to African migrants confronted with mental health challenges. We aimed to explore the coping strategies among African migrants in Australia. We undertook semi-structured interviews online with 11 participants with African backgrounds, comprising six mental health clinicians and five migrant service users living in Australia for at least the past 12 months. Teacher educators have a significant responsibility in promoting anti-racist pedagogy and guiding preservice teachers to engage in critical self-examination regarding dominant narratives. However, many teacher education programmes fall short of adequately equipping aspiring teachers for diverse classrooms as they often perpetuate a predominantly white system and curricula. This dissertation examines how Oneida and broader Haudenosaunee mourning practices, as I have lived and understood them, shape grief, healing, and matrilineal responsibility in my family. Using Indigenous autoethnography and storywork, I first present a crafted narrative, then return to that narrative through reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis identifies patterned meanings in how grief is structured, shared, and carried across closely stacked deaths in the maternal line. Mourning practices function as community infrastructure that organizes time, redistributes labor, transmits knowledge, and sustains continuing bonds with the dead. This study explores whether listeners can identify the differences in harmonic progressions in a musical composition, and, if so, whether those differences can elicit a cultural or social perception of the origins of the music. The issue of book bans has moved to the forefront of public and political debate over the past few years. Anti-censorship advocates who defend against these challenges have yet to be studied. The purpose of this study was to examine the beliefs and worldviews as expressed by those defenders in a public forum—Reddit. Data in the form of Reddit threads was collected from subreddits belonging to states that have seen the greatest number of book challenges.
