A Research Agenda For Economic Evaluation Of Substance Abuse Services, Michael T. French, M. C. Drummond Dec 2004

A Research Agenda For Economic Evaluation Of Substance Abuse Services, Michael T. French, M. C. Drummond

Michael T. French

Economic analyses of substance abuse interventions play a critical role in informing the decision makers involved in funding these programs. Despite the emergence of new and more effective interventions, the adoption of costlier services still demands justification based on economic evidence. Updated and more rigorous economic information allows patients, health care professionals, insurance companies, policymakers, and others to allocate scarce resources more efficiently. To prepare for the next wave of addiction health services research, this article presents background information on the economics of addiction health services, reviews recent empirical and methodological contributions, and provides 15 research recommendations.

Michael T. French

Objective: Problem alcohol use among elderly persons can have a variety of health-related consequences, complicating management of chronic illnesses and increasing health care utilization and costs. This study evaluates the economic cost and benefits of brief intervention for at-risk drinking older adults. Method: A controlled clinical trial with 24-month follow-up tested effectiveness of brief physician advice in reducing alcohol use, health care utilization and other consequences among older (age 65 or older) adult problem drinkers. Of 6,073 patients screened for problem drinking in 24 community-based primary care practices in Wisconsin, 158 patients met inclusion criteria and were randomized into control …

The $\Alpha$ And The $\Omega$ Of Congeneric Test Theory: An Extension Of Reliability And Internal Consistency To Heterogeneous Tests, Joseph F. Lucke Dec 2004

The $\Alpha$ And The $\Omega$ Of Congeneric Test Theory: An Extension Of Reliability And Internal Consistency To Heterogeneous Tests, Joseph F. Lucke

Joseph Lucke

Psychometric theory focuses primarily on tests that are homogeneous, that measure only one attribute of a psychosocial entity. However, the complexity of psychosocial behavior often requires tests that are heterogeneous, that measure more than one attribute. In this presentation, reliability and internal consistency are extended to heterogeneous tests under the rubric of congeneric test theory. The extensions show that reliability and internal consistency have very similar properties. Reliability and internal consistency are shown to be unique up to a linear transformation. Whereas internal consistency is a lower bound to reliability in the homogeneous case, it is a strict lower bound …

Archetypal Energies And The Four Faces Of Romantic Relationships, Carroy U. Ferguson Dec 2004

Archetypal Energies And The Four Faces Of Romantic Relationships, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

All relationships are valuable learning experiences. They are mirrors to assist us in our various Earth lessons. As mirrors, relationships, particularly romantic or intimate relationships, reflect to a large extent energies that are going on inside of us. At much deeper levels, these energies are what I call our authentic Archetypal Energies. Over the years, I have come to recognize at least twenty-five of these primary Archetypal Energies, each with a unique function and purpose for our human experience. I use easily recognized terms to evoke a common sense of these energies. Love, for example, is one of these deeper …

Syllabus - "Selling Sex: Feminist Discourses On The Sex Work Industry" (Cornell College, Women's Studies Course), Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Mandy (Amanda) Swygart-Hobaugh

We examined competing feminist discourses regarding women’s involvement/portrayal in the sex work industry. Grounded in feminist theoretical and methodological perspectives, our discussions were guided by the following considerations: (1) What are the competing feminist discourses regarding sex work, and what are the similarities/differences between these discourses? (2) How are these competing discourses deployed in a global context, and what issues/concerns arise within a global consideration of sex work? (3) Is sex work inherently degrading/objectifying to women, or can one allow that it may also be sexually liberating? (4) How might one’s social situatedness (i.e. social class, race/ethnicity, gender, education, non-sex …

Value Priority And Human Rights Policy: A Comparison Between China And Western Nations, Hong Xiao Dec 2004

Value Priority And Human Rights Policy: A Comparison Between China And Western Nations, Hong Xiao

Hong Xiao

At the centre of controversy over human rights policy in China is the disagreement on the relationship between two sets of human rights: civil and political rights on the one hand, and social and economic rights on the other. Much of the debate, however, has been undertaken on theoretical and normative levels. Empirical evidence is needed to advance this debate. Drawing data from a multination survey, this research explores whether Chinese and Westerners differ in their human rights policy preferences. The findings suggest that while social and economic rights have a much broader support base in China than in Western …

Consuming Dark Tourism: A Call For Research, Philip Stone Dr Dec 2004

Consuming Dark Tourism: A Call For Research, Philip Stone Dr

Dr Philip Stone

There are an increasing plethora of sites associated with death, tragedy or the macabre that have become significant tourist ‘attractions’. As a result, the term ‘dark tourism’ has entered academic discourse. However, dark tourism literature is both eclectic and theoretically fragile. This is especially the case with regards to consumption and its implications for understanding the ‘dark tourist’. Thus it is suggested that the dimensions of dark tourism consumption have not been extracted or interrogated – only assumed. Consequently, with death and the nature of dying at the crux of the dark tourism concept, this article calls for the development …

Desafios Da Constituição Europeia À Teoria Constitucional, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2004

Desafios Da Constituição Europeia À Teoria Constitucional, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

The project of the “Treaty that establishes a Constitution for the Europe”, beyond its political consequences, puts some challenges to the classical constitutional theory. At first sight, it seems completely heterodox towards canon constitutional tendencies, and first of all in what concerns the constituent power classical theories. However, a more rigorous analysis of the history of the modern constitutionalism and its founding texts, mainly French, can lead us to detect very revealing bridges between the liberal modern constitutionalism of the XVIIIth century and the present constitution making of a codified European Constitution. The “treaty” formula that was adopted also represents …

Making Experience Meaningful:
Interpreting Chinese Canadian Women's Personal Encounters With Racism, Jane S. Ku Dec 2004

Making Experience Meaningful:
Interpreting Chinese Canadian Women's Personal Encounters With Racism, Jane S. Ku

Jane S Ku

Using Philomena Essed's theory on everyday racism, this paper explores how Chinese Canadian women interpret racism. It argues that differences in interpretation can be explained by examining personal biographies that attend to subjective experience and social context, and from which implications for anti-racist feminist epistemology can be drawn.
