Diversity in the legal profession is not something that can solely be accomplished by our law schools; it requires a concerted effort among a state's legal institutions. P r e - h advisors can initiate these partnerships to everyone's benefit. This article describes some of the joint efforts taking place in Nebraska and provides information to pre-law advisors on how to begin development of joint initiatives.

I never intended a career in publishing. In 1983, I was in grad school, trying to redeem an M.A. in literature by getting a more socially responsible M.A. in Teaching ESL, when somehow there was a baby on the way. I decided it was really my job to find a real job, and I happened into one in publishing. In those days, I wasn’t much of a people person, so the post of acquisitions editor had plenty of appeal. Acquisitions editors are the ones, as Dogbert says, who can reject your life’s work with a gesture and a witty remark. …

A Narrative Approach To The Evaluation Of Supportive Housing: Stories Of Homeless People Who Have Experienced Serious Mental Illness, Geoffrey Nelson, Juanne Nancarrow Clarke, Angela Febbraro, Maria Hatzipantelis

We present the findings of a narrative approach to the evaluation of supportive housing for formerly homeless people who have experienced serious mental illness. According to the accounts of 11 men and 9 women, their youth and adult years were piled with personal problems, troubled relationships, and a lack of adequate social resources. Since entering supportive housing, participants noted more stability in their lives and the beginning of journeys to recover positive personal identities, restore or develop new supportive relationships, and reclaim resources vital to leading lives with dignity and meaning. The standard pedagogical examination of government budgets includes the distinction between cyclical and structural deficits and surpluses and changes thereof. This paper extends the regular classroom analysis and graphically demonstrates that cyclical changes in the government budget can be decomposed and stated as the summation of the expenditure effect and the revenue effect.

In 2003, members of the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems continued to offer millions of uninsured and underserved individuals access to the medical services so critical for lifelong health and well-being. Delivering these services was difficult, however, given the economic downtown early in the decade and the resulting inadequacies associated with safety net financing. This report examines the operations and activities of NAPH members in 2003, presents the financial challenges they faced, describes the clinical and community services they provided, and profiles the patients they served.

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study investigated the relationship between age and the perception of competence of pilots by the traveling public. Scenarios were utilized that depicted an airline captain successfully landing an airplane amidst adverse conditions. Scenarios varied only by the age of the Captain: Young, Old, or Unspecified Age and that the Young and Old scenarios included a photo of the captain. Perceived effectiveness, competence, avoidance, blame, and attribution as depicted by the Captain's performance in the scenario were assessed by 180 participants in three age groups (18-34, 35-55, and 56

This paper investigates many facets of civic engagement by analyzing how college undergraduate students conceptualize civic engagement and by examining factors that predict greater student involvement in political, social, and community affairs.We administered a survey to college students at the beginning of fall, winter, and spring terms, 2001-02.We analyzed survey responses using a structural equation modeling (SEM) technique. The analysis examines how expectations of community and political efficacy, attitudes regarding citizen control of government, and attitudes toward diversity relate to the students’ civic engagement behaviors such as monthly volunteer hours, organizational participation, advocacy, voting, direct political action, and action to …

Between 2001 and 2005, the state of Maine shifted the focus of its statewide high school improvement efforts to include an explicit focus on adolescent literacy. One trigger for that change in focus was a 5-school adolescent literacy initiative previously launched in a rural county under the federal Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory contract. This monograph describes the multi-party mobilization that led to the creation and implementation of the adolescent literacy project and explains the link between the modest rural effort and the change in state-level reform efforts.

Alteration of the Great Plains landscape during the past two centuries has permitted scores of weedy plants to flourish and expand their ranges, often profoundly affecting the ecology and economy of the region. As their numbers have increased, weed identification has become progressively more challenging. More than 600 of the 3,600 species of flowering plants and ferns documented in the Great Plains were not here 200 years ago. This book, updating and replacing Weeds of Nebraska and the Great Plains (1994), intends to enable users to "identify or confirm the identity of the most important weeds in the Great Plains."

A cross-sectional design was used to assess the language skills and prevalence of language disorders among 84 randomly selected public school children (K-5) receiving special education services for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). The mean receptive language standard score fell in the nonclinical range, whereas the mean total and expressive standard scores fell in the clinical range. The prevalence rates of total, expressive, and receptive disorders among children with EBD were 54%, 55%, and 42%, respectively. Approximately two-thirds of children experienced a language disorder (i.e., total, expressive, and/or receptive). Half of those experiencing a language disorder met clinical criteria in …

The Platte River has changed from a nearly treeless prairie river to a heavily forested river. These habitat changes have likely benefited many woodland birds, but have harmed other migratory birds such as cranes. In response to this impact on migratory birds, conservation groups implemented a tree-clearing program to enhance habitat for these species. This practice is not without controversy because of concerns about its effect on woodland birds. The goal of this study was to determine the composition and abundance of breeding birds that use these forests and discuss the potential impacts of tree clearing on woodland birds. Surveys …

Few works on the Southern Plains have taken a decisively theoretical approach to the understanding of the relationships between the European colonizing nations and Native American groups and the mutual effects of contact. Building on previous scholarly works, this book provides a good synthetic and analytic review of the theoretical approaches and models previously applied to Plains studies, but furthers the discourse by zooming in on the Hasinai and the Comanche. Although this is problematic because neither the Comanche nor certainly the "Hasinai" groups can be treated wholesale or in terms of their long-term trajectories, McCollough's use of World Systems …

Loren M. Smith and his students at Texas Tech have been studying the ecology of playas for two decades. Playas of the Great Plains is the fruit of that work.
Playas (or playa lakes) are shallow, circular basins that hold water following rainstorms but usually dry up later in the growing season. These unique, ephemeral wetlands occur in arid and semi -arid environments around the world, but nowhere more abundantly than on the tablelands of the Southern Great Plains of North America.
