Nature, Raw Materials And Political Economy, Paul Ciccantell, David Smith, Gay Seidman Dec 2004

Nature, Raw Materials And Political Economy, Paul Ciccantell, David Smith, Gay Seidman

Paul Ciccantell

At the beginning of the 21st century, nations, economies and people around the world confront tremendous environmental challenges. Conflicts in oil-producing areas threaten production and increase prices at the same time that many argue that global oil supplies have begun a long term decline. Access to water drives growing numbers of social and military conflicts. International efforts to address global warming falter as major polluting nations withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol. Deforestation in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, Africa and the Amazon threaten to change global weather patterns and increase poverty in many of the world=s poorest nations. Even the …

Who Does The Public Trust? The Case Of Genetically Modified Food In The United States, John Lang, William Hallman Dec 2004

Who Does The Public Trust? The Case Of Genetically Modified Food In The United States, John Lang, William Hallman

John T. Lang

Trust is important for the perception of many types of risk, including those relating to genetically modified (GM) food. Who the public trusts in any given circumstance, however, is not well understood. In this study of public trust regarding GM food, an exploratory factor analysis with Promax rotation reveals public classification of three common institutional types—evaluators, watchdogs, and merchants. The structure of relationships among these stakeholders can act to enable or constrain public support for this new technology. Evaluators—scientists, universities, and medical professionals—are the most trusted. Watchdogs—consumer advocacy organizations, environmental organizations, and media sources—are moderately trusted. Merchants—grocers and grocery stores, …

Black Butte Jump, Robert Mccarl

Robert S. McCarl

Instead of wearing peace signs or shoulder-length hair and making a pilgrimage to Haight Ashbury, I spent the summer of 1968 wearing White logging boots and running five miles every morning, getting ready for my last summer of smokejumping.

The Oxycontin Epidemic And Crime Panic In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth Tunnell Dec 2004

The Oxycontin Epidemic And Crime Panic In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth Tunnell

Kenneth Tunnell

During the late 1990s in the United States, rural Kentucky (and rural pockets of nearby states) witnessed the emergence of a new pharmaceutical drug of abuse. The powerful oxycodone OxyContin, first manufactured in 1996 and designed for time-release pain relief, found a ready population in rural hamlets and mountain communities. Intended for patients in pain associated with terminal disease, it became a drug of abuse as it was overprescribed and trafficked within newly developed black markets. This paper describes the takeoff of this new drug of abuse, its antecedents, its effects on rural communities, and coordinated efforts at containing it. …

Globalization And The Race For Resources, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell Dec 2004

Globalization And The Race For Resources, Stephen Bunker, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

Globalization is a self-reinforcing, ever-expanding cycle of interdependent economies of scale in production and transport attempting to resolve the diseconomies of space they create. In Globalization and the Race for Resources, Stephen G. Bunker and Paul Ciccantell integrate ecological and economic explanations of extraction and production into a comparative history of six hundred years of globalization that explores the sequence of trade dominant nations—Portugal, Holland, Britain, the United States, and Japan—and shows how each devised technologies, social and financial institutions, and markets that enhanced their particular locational advantages within this cycle.

Globalization of the world economy results from the progressive …

I Will Not Eat It With A Fox; I Will Not Eat It In A Box: What Determines Acceptance Of Gm Food For American Consumers?, Venkata Puduri, Ramu Govindasamy, John Lang, Benjamin Onyango

John T. Lang

This article suggests differential acceptance and approval of genetic modification involving plant or animal genes. The results can contribute to our understanding of GM food acceptance and be used to derive marketing strategies and in policy formulation. Similar to previous studies, this article suggests that demographic, socio-economic, consumer value attributes, and trust in key stakeholders help drive acceptance of genetic modification. In general, the public is more approving of plant-based GM than animal-based GM. Furthermore, the results of this survey suggest that a better understanding of biotechnology, trust in the GM regulatory framework, and biotechnology corporations’ motives are critical for …

The 'Diaspora' Diaspora, Rogers Brubaker Dec 2004

The 'Diaspora' Diaspora, Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker

As the use of ‘diaspora’ has proliferated in the last decade, its meaning has been stretched in various directions. This article traces the dispersion of the term in semantic, conceptual and disciplinary space; analyses three core elements that continue to be understood as constitutive of diaspora; assesses claims made by theorists of diaspora about a radical shift in perspective and a fundamental change in the social world; and proposes to treat diaspora not as a bounded entity but as an idiom, stance andclaim.

Restructuring Markets And Reorganizing Nature: The Political Economy And Ecology Of Japan’S Global Search For Raw Materials, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker Dec 2004

Restructuring Markets And Reorganizing Nature: The Political Economy And Ecology Of Japan’S Global Search For Raw Materials, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker

Paul Ciccantell

How did Japan rise to challenge U.S. economic supremacy? We argue that the foundation of Japan's rise from a defeated nation in 1945 to an economic powerhouse is the raw materials that Japanese firms have turned into cars, ships, consumer electronics, and of other industrial products. A small island nation that lacked adequate domestic supplies of virtually all the raw materials essential to industrial production became a world leader in the production of steel and of products which required millions of tons per year of raw materials. Japanese firms and the Japanese state turned an apparent material and economic disadvantage, …

Alcohol Consumption, Risk Of Injury, And High-Cost Medical Care, Michael French, Helena Salome, Helen Matzger, Constance Weisner Dec 2004

Alcohol Consumption, Risk Of Injury, And High-Cost Medical Care, Michael French, Helena Salome, Helen Matzger, Constance Weisner

Michael T. French

This study examined the effect of alcohol use on the probabilities of injury, inpatient hospital stay, and emergency department visit. Data were obtained from a sample of adults (N=1219) recruited from a Northern California county. Alcohol use measures included number of drinks, heavy drinking days, and an indicator variable for problem drinking. Models were estimated for men and women separately while controlling for confounders. Results indicate that most alcohol use measures were not significantly related to injury probability or medical care utilization. Among the exceptions, problem drinking was a significant positive predictor of any emergency department visit for both sexes. …
