Attitude Of Utah Farm People Toward The Extension Service In Utah, Stephen L. Brower

The Cooperative Extension Service in agriculture and home economics was established on a national basis in 1914 by the passage of the Smith-Lever Act. The act stated, in broad non-restrictive terms, that the major purpose of cooperative extension work was "to aid in diffusing among the people of the United States useful and practical information on subjects related to agriculture and home economics, and to encourage the application of the same." Thus the primary function of the Cooperative Extension Service in agriculture and home economics is education.

Members of the Board of Directors desired such a study be made as a means of drawing together the past work of their organization. They also looked to the study as being a help in making future plans for the continuation of their work.

The purpose of this study is to inquire into the social adjustment of patients admitted to the Louisville General Hospital in 1946, diagnosed as schizophrenic, treated there with electroshock therapy and subsequently discharged to their homes or to the Central State Hospital. Schizophrenia, as we know, is considered one of the most serious of personality disturbances and accounts for a high proportion of the admissions to mental hospitals. There are over 20,000 schizophrenics entering mental hospitals in the United States yearly. Prior to the use of convulsive therapy the prognosis for schizophrenic patients was regarded as poor, and no methods …

In 1864, the Red Cross was born by the signing of the Treaty of Geneva. It was to become the only great international organization of its kind to relieve suffering during times of war. The founders had advanced the idea that relief in time of epidemics and disaster would be equally valuable, but this idea was not incorporated in the treaty. Purpose of the Study: Due to the resignation of Miss Nettie Smith, a board member of The King's Daughters Home for Incurables, Louisville, Kentucky, who was paid on a part time basis to do social work for the Home, the board members requested help from the Community Chest in finding someone to continue the work that Miss Smith had been doing for the Home. Plain City is a, rural village of 822 people (Sixteenth Census, United States, 1940) located on a fiat, plain area ten miles northwest of Olden, Utah, a city of 51,927 people (1946 survey of the Weber County-Ogden City Planning Commission).

Plain City was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1859 after the pattern followed in nearly all the early settlements of this area. Since 1909, the King's Daughters' Home for Incurables in Louisville, Kentucky, has provided institutional care for physically handicapped persons who are residents of Kentucky. A hospital survey done by the Kentucky State Board of Health in 1945-46 classified the Home as a "custodial-type institution", and did not include it in the survey, as it was not considered a hospital. Surveys on phases of the work of the institution were done in 1914 (Haven Emerson Survey) and in 1940 (Health and Welfare Council Survey) for administrative purposes. This is a study of patients readmitted to Nichols Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky during the period of April through December of 1946. This particular project was undertaken because on general observation, there appeared to be an unusual number of patients being readmitted to the hospital after having received "maximum hospital benefits" at a previous hospital admission and having been discharged "improved". To bear out this observation, a sample study was made over a ten day period and it was found that 14 percent of all the patients being admitted were readmissions. Since this was true, the question arose …

This study is an attempt to follow the development of the group of children who attended the Mental Hygiene Clinic Nursery School of Louisville, Kentucky in its first three years, September, 1939 through May, 1942. The children were studied on a comparative basis of their behavior in the two school situations - nursery school in 1939-1942 and elementary school in 1946. The study not only considers the child's behavior in the classroom, but also attempts to evaluate the effects at personality and environmental influences upon the child's school adjustment - his health, conditions in the home, and mental development.
