The purpose of this study was to examine whether or not DCS social workers would obtain client's educational records if they had electronic access to these records. If a social worker could access client school records quickly and easily and then enter the information into the case management computer system, the school history would travel with the client to their new environment. This information would insure that the foster child with special education needs was placed in the proper classroom, giving the child a better chance to succeed.

This study explored how students utilized spirituality as an effective coping mechanism for the stress they faced while in the Master's of Social Work program at California State University, San Bernardino. A stress and spirituality scale was used to measure each student's spirituality and perceived stress. Most students stated that spirituality and religious activity was helpful in coping with the stress of the MSW program. In addition, spirituality was found to have a strong positive impact on a person's abilities to cope with the stress of the program.

This study examined an important, yet underreported, area of family service agency assessments, the failure to adequately screen for substance abuse issues. A self-report screening instrument was used to accurately determine substance abuse frequency rates, instead of using the current clinician-directed questioning. New agency clients were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (self-report) or the control group (clinician-directed) to determine if assessment accuracy improved.

Involvement with child protective services (CPS) may be expected to be a stressful experience for parents. Usually their involvement is involuntary, initiated because someone believes they are not caring adequately for their children: this tells them that the community, or someone in the community, does not approve of them as parents. Casselberry, Cleveland, Ohio, while serving a few weeks as a public health nurse under the direction of Alice Lloyd in Knott County, Kentucky. Includes newspaper clippings, 1940-1941, religious pamphlets, and photos, 1925. A letter from Casselberry also recounts the reaction to an N.R.A. (National Recovery Administration) sticker on her car as “the mark of the beast.”

Our purpose in interviewing families who had a child placed in residential children’s mental health treatment was to provide insight into the lives and service experiences of these families as they struggle to care for their child and find appropriate services. Placing a child in substitute care is one of the most challenging aspects of child welfare work. In situations of apprehension, child welfare workers may be required to make quick decisions about child placement sometimes with very limited information. This paper is based on interviews with mothers whose children were placed in substitute care. Mothers’ daily lives, including the nature of adversity in their lives, will be discussed. Mothers’ response to adversity and how they are impacted both positively and negatively by child welfare interventions will also be explored.
