How members of a social unit acquire their shared knowledge about the social world was approached in Sherif's (1935, 1936) writings on norm formation and in the phenomenological descriptions of Schutz (1971, 1973) and Berger and Luckmann (1967). Both traditions presume that shared understandings originate in face-to-face encounters, but they diverge in that the phenomenologists argue that talk, and the construction of "typifications," plays a prominent role in the acquisition of shared knowledge. For the phenomenologists, a "typification" enables members to categorize behavior as a known event and permits individuals to consider disparate behaviors as belonging to the same class …

Cerebral Asymmetries In Human Colour Perception, Zoe L. Hayes

Two experiments were designed in order to explore hemisphere asymmetries in both the identification and discrimination of colour. Extensive predictions were made based on the assumption that manual responses are controlled from the contralateral hemisphere and speech from the left hemisphere. The results of both experiments were inconclusive. Discussion centred around possible reasons for the limited effects and the design of future research.

Residential Stress: An Application Of A Comprehensive Stress Model, Graham Arthur Draper

This study identifies a need for an overall conceptual framework for viewing residential mobility and proposes that a stress-response model supplies that need. A proposed model tries to incorporate all the various existing notions of stress in one basic model. It provides for a wide variety of human experiences and responses, attempts to explain the stress condition, and provides a basis for future research in a variety of problem areas. The model is tested, and found to be satisfactory with a sample of high-rise apartment dwellers who moved within London, Ontario.

1361 Ss of ages 8-45 were told that they were to be tested for creative imagination, and were then given the Creative Imagination Scale (CIS), which contains 10 test-suggestions that ask subjects to imagine various sensations and states of awareness: for example, that an arm is light, their hand is becoming warm from the sun, they are eating a delicious orange, they feel that time is slowing down, and they are reexperiencing themselves back in first grade in elementary school. Investigated the effects of subsequent related information and individual differences in cognitive flexibility on prose recall. 70 undergraduates read a passage and then were given either consistent or contradictory incidental information. Errors in cued recall, reflecting the nature of the subsequent information, were more frequently produced after a 3-wk delay than after 2 days. These results were consistent with R. J. Spiro's (1975) findings with free recall. In addition, 3-wk Ss were more confident about correct recall than errors, indicating that errors resulted, in part, from retrieval processes. Three experiments were carried out with children in a private office on the measurement of distress caused by allergy treatment injections and on a behavioral technique to alleviate this treatment-induced distress. In Experiment 1 a rating scale to measure observable indices of distress with children receiving injections was developed and its construct validity and reliability determined. In Experiment 2, norms were derived for the sample of children studied and the nature of the expression of distress according to age and sex was examined. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based multicomponent anger management program utilizing self-control procedures for: (a) decreasing frequencies of aversive parent behaviors directed toward target children and (b) altering parents'; angry feelings and subjective urges to physically harm their children in provocation situations. Abusive parents from three at-risk families were trained in the use of anger management skills tb aid them in coping with arousal on cognitive, somatic, and behavioral levels, simultaneously. Transfer Of Household Management Skills From A Board And Care Home To An Experimental Apartment Via Programming Common Stimuli, Richard W. Couch

A random multielement design was used in two replications to assess the effectiveness of programming common stimuli to enhance the transfer of household management skills from a group home for mentally disabled adults to an experimental apartment. Salient stimulus items were taken from the subjects' group homes (training site) and placed in an experimental apartment (testing site) as the participants were advancing through a program to teach them independent living skills. The results suggest that the transfer of household management skills was enhanced by programming in stimuli from the training site.

Tension headache is an important medical-behavioral disorder because of its high incidence and the personal discomfort and disruption of normal activities that frequently accompany it. Several behavioral strategies have been applied in the treatment of this disorder. Two of the most prominent treatments are EMG biofeedback and Progressive muscle relaxation exercises. Research has shown both of these strategies to be effective treatments of tension headache but much debate still ensues as to which is the more effective treatment. The effects of different self-monitoring procedures have never been compared during EMG biofeedback or Progressive muscle relaxation treatments of tension headache.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate whether relationships could be found between certain characteristics of one's self-concept and locus of control. This paper is a report of that study.

Method of Study:

Data contained in this study were gathered by utilizing the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and the Rotter's I-E (Internal-External) Scale. A total of one hundred 1980 Rantoul High School psychology and physics students were administered the above standardized tests. There were two sets of problems which were of focal interest: (1) Did the achievement levels of the students selected come up a significant degree? (The administration wished a month's gain for a month's instruction.) (2) Did the children's personality and behavior characteristics change for the better?

Procedure

The design used was a one-group pretest-posttest design. Achievement, behavior, and personality traits were measured on the original sixteen children and in remaining ten who were still in the classes after two years.

In 1972 James Barger published his book The Presidential Character: Predicting Performance in the White House. In this book Barber tries to typify the American Presidents, beginning with William H. Taft, according to four psycho-political categories: active-positive, active-negative, passive-positive, and passive-negative. The most important part of Barber's thesis is that the future performance of any presidential candidate can be predicted by looking at the factors that place him into a certain category. The present study examines the relation between expressed anxiety and assertiveness. This relation was examined by administering the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) - State and Trait Scales, the Fear Survey Schedule-III (FSS-III), the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS), the College Self-Expression Scale (CSES) and eight role-plays designed to elicit assertive responses to twenty-four students (15 females and 9 males) enrolled in a class in personality assessment at Eastern Illinois University.

The importance of emotional and physical factors in allergic disorders has become the focus of a body of literature (Wittkower & Engels, 1965). Some evidence suggests that allergic individuals possess certain maladaptive personality traits. Researchers have reported that allergic individuals are more neurotic than age-matched groups of normals (Dekker, Barendregt, & De Vries, 1961), and more aggressive than non allergic individuals (Alexander, 1952; Groen, 1950; Jares & Kerekjarto, 1967). This study investigated the relationship between global/specific and stable/unstable dimensions of attributions and the generalization of helplessness across tasks and situations. Four groups of subjects were given instructions suggesting that their performance on a Venn diagram task could be attributed to (a) global or specific and (b) staple or unstable factors. Then, during performance of this task, these subjects were given noncontingent correctness feedback on their responses. A control group given the same task received no attribution instructions or feedback on their performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET) in reducing levels of trait anxiety in undergraduates who enrolled in anxiety reduction workshops. S's were 44 volunteer male and female students from the University of the Pacific who enrolled in either an independent study or a mini-course series of 8 sessions, and were assigned to one of the three randomly designated groups: Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET), Attention Placebo (AP), or No-Treatment (NT).
