Recent Life Stress Events And Adolescent Pregnancy, Mahalla Lenzi

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Three groups of adolescent girls ages 15-18 were compared regarding recent life stresses. Group I consisted of 50 girls pregnant for the first time. Group II consisted of 50 girls who never had been pregnant but were sexually experienced (defined as having engaged in sexual intercourse). Group III consisted of 50 girls who never engaged in sexual intercourse. All three groups were asked nine questions of demographic information and were administered the Recent Life Events Questionnaire. Subjects were asked to rate from 1-5 each event that had happened to them: for Group III the year before testing, for Group II …

Age Differences In Hypothesis Testing And Frequency Processing In Concept Learning, Ronald Thomas Kellogg Jan 1983

Age Differences In Hypothesis Testing And Frequency Processing In Concept Learning, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two types of processes, controlled hypothesis testing and automatic frequency processing, have been posited to explain concept learning. The present study employed a concept-identification task to compare fifth-graders, college students, and elderly adults in their ability to test hypotheses and compile feature frequency information. College students proved superior in both their efficiency of selecting the correct hypothesis and their accuracy of recalling sampled hypotheses, and fifth-graders and elderly adults performed about the same on these measures of hypothesis-testing ability. Ability to estimate feature frequencies followed the same developmental pattern. The results support the view that hypothesis testing is an effortful, …

Rating Life Events : The Effect Of Experience And Point Of Reference, Richard John Alden Jan 1983

Rating Life Events : The Effect Of Experience And Point Of Reference, Richard John Alden

Dissertations and Theses

Life events inventories have been extensively used to investigate the relationship between stressful life events and the etiology of disease. In order to elucidate conceptual and methodological issues surrounding the use of these instruments, a Life Events Questionnaire was constructed and administered to 100 university students. Subjects indicated which of 40 events they had experienced and rated all events on a 20 point scale based on the amount of readjustment judged to be required by each event, both for themselves and for a hypothetical average person. Results of a three-way ANOVA indicated that in the majority of cases, neither the …

Toward A Behavioral Analysis Of Attentiveness As A Style Of Communication, Ray Alan Coker Jan 1983

Toward A Behavioral Analysis Of Attentiveness As A Style Of Communication, Ray Alan Coker

Dissertations and Theses

Attentiveness, a variable of communication, primarily serves a stylistic function in the communicative process by providing behavioral evidence that an individual is actively involved in message reception. Past research suggests that while both verbal and nonverbal behaviors signal attentiveness, nonverbal cues are more closely associated with this construct. Among the many nonverbal behaviors of individuals in interactions, postural positions have been deemed highly indicative of attentiveness. At present however, most of the empirical evidence attesting to this notion has been established through the use of self-report measures. As a result of the felt need by this author to improve upon …

The Work Values Of Secondary Teachers : A Comparative Study By Teaching Assignment, Charlotte Marie Klampe Jan 1983

The Work Values Of Secondary Teachers : A Comparative Study By Teaching Assignment, Charlotte Marie Klampe

Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this study was on the work values of secondary school teachers. Values have been defined in many ways. The common agreement is that values are standards, beliefs, or principles that do guide and direct a person's behavior. The values a teacher holds will influence a student due to the natural role-modeling effect in the classroom. With the advent of career education and exploration of the world of work, the values held toward work become a timely topic. The discussion of values and value clarification in all aspects of a person's life is one that is becoming very …

Psychometric Properties Of The Group Process Questionnaire, Lucia Igou Eakins Jan 1983

Psychometric Properties Of The Group Process Questionnaire, Lucia Igou Eakins

Dissertations and Theses

The Group Process Questionnaire (GPQ), a 55-item rating scale, was developed by Richard Wollert in 1981 to assess perceptions of the frequency of processes occurring in self-help groups (SHGs). The GPQ was first employed by Wollert, Eakins, and Dixon (Note 1) as the primary data collection instrument in an ongoing investigation of urban SHGs. This investigation is one of a small number of empirical studies which have attempted to specify the range of SHG activities. Due to the relatively recent emergence of SHGs as topics of research, and the unique obstacles to research presented by the independent character of these …

The Relationship Between Need Trait And Temperament Type, Gertrude Elizabeth Jordan Jan 1983

The Relationship Between Need Trait And Temperament Type, Gertrude Elizabeth Jordan

Dissertations

Problem. Need trait -- as motivation for behavior -- and temperament type -- as emotional disposition and affective mood -- are understood to be interacting major components of the structure of personality. Past observation, speculation, and study of these constructs have lacked the psychometric and analytic refinements possible, through test development and statistical methodology, to researcher in the 1980s. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the relationship of need and temperament emerged in as consistent a manner as had been observed and tested in the past.

Method. Two standardized instruments, the Personality Research Form - AA and …

Optimal Foraging Theory And The Psychology Of Learning, Alan Kamil Jan 1983

Optimal Foraging Theory And The Psychology Of Learning, Alan Kamil

Avian Cognition Papers

The development of optimization theory has made important contributions to the study of animal behavior. But the optimization approach needs to be integrated with other methods of ethology and psychology. For example, the ability to learn is an important component of efficient foraging behavior in many species, and the psychology of animal learning could contribute substantially to testing and extending the predictions of optimal foraging theory.

Parameters Of Mental Rehearsal, Timothy K. Kelly Jan 1983

Parameters Of Mental Rehearsal, Timothy K. Kelly

Dissertations and Theses

An extensive review of the literature of the phenomenon of mental rehearsal (MR), or the act of imagining oneself performing a behavior in anticipation of eventually doing so, indicated that MR could facilitate improved performance on varied motor skills. An experiment which drew from previous studies in MR, incorporated suggestions from.the literature, and used a novel measurement task was conducted. The present study compared MR to physical practice (PP), no practice (NP), mental rehearsal/physical practice combined (MR/PP), and interference mental rehearsal (I). Five groups of twenty subjects (N=100) played a hand-held video computer game in a pre- and post-test design. …

The Helper-Therapy Principle Applied To Weight Management Specialists, Kenneth A. Wallston, Mark R. Mcminn, Martin Katahn, John Pleas

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

One hundred twenty applicants to a weight management specialist training program were studied over a 33-month period. Following a nine-month training period, Specialists (N = 29; those leading at least one posttraining weight management group) were compared to Contact Controls (N = 31; persons participating in the weight management program, but not in the helper role) and No Contact Controls (N = 60; those not accepted into the training program and whose only contact with the program was for data collection purposes) in a test of the helper-therapy principle. The major question was, "What are the long-term physical, psychological, and …

Bonuses And Bribes: Mood Effects In Memory, A. K. Boggiano, Paula T. Hertel Jan 1983

Bonuses And Bribes: Mood Effects In Memory, A. K. Boggiano, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

Free recall of emotionally positive, neutral, and negative adjectives was used as an indirect assessment of the effects of reward on expectations about intrinsic interest. Reward for performing later activities described as interesting (a "bonus" orientation) produced recall of a greater number of emotionally positive adjectives, whereas reward for the same activities described as boring (a "bribe" orientation) produced recall of a larger number of negative adjectives. A cued-expectancy analysis suggests that reward serves to polarize initial attitude about forthcoming tasks; these polarized attitudes, like moods, influence the nature of words retrieved from memory.

Sex Differences In Mortality Statistics In Relation To Employment Status And Marital Status, Moseley Green Ruark Jan 1983

Sex Differences In Mortality Statistics In Relation To Employment Status And Marital Status, Moseley Green Ruark

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Male mortality rates exceeded female rates in every death type and the sex differential increased from 1970 to 1980 in every death type except homicides. The findings in this study suggest that marital and employment factors contribute to sex differences in mortality for suicidal and accidental deaths. Being employed was associated with fewer suicidal and accidental deaths for females than for males. Being married was associated with fewer suicidal and accidental deaths for males, while marital status had no relationship to suicidal and accidental deaths for females. Due to these relationships it might be inferred that the expanding sex differential …
