Brief Mood Introspection Scale (Bmis): Open-Source Data, John D. Mayer, Yvonne N. Gaschke
Brief Mood Introspection Scale (Bmis): Open-Source Data, John D. Mayer, Yvonne N. Gaschke
UNH Personality Lab
Mood experience is comprised of at least two elements: the direct experience of the mood and a meta-level of experience that consists of thoughts and feelings about the mood. In Study 1, a two-dimensional structure for the direct experience of mood (Watson & Tellegen, 1985) was tested for its fit to the responses of 1,572 subjects who each completed one of the three different mood scales, including a brief scale developed to assist future research. The Watson and Tellegen structure was supported across all three scales. In Study 2, meta-mood experience was conceptualized as the product of a mood regulatory …

Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test: Development Of Norms For Healthy Young Adults, Arthur N. Wiens, Mark R. Mcminn, John R. Crossen
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) has been widely used in clinical neuropsychology because of the usefulness of its multiple measures of learning and memory and its ease of administration. Normative data has been reported for some patient populations but little normative data exists for healthy individuals. This study reports AVLT data for 222 job applicants, presently employed in a variety of occupations, who had previously passed basic-academic-skills tests and physical examinations and were motivated to perform well on AVLT testing. AVLT normative data are presented by WAIS-R FSIQ, Age, Education, and by Age and FSIQ combined. We also present …

The Brief Mood Introspection Scale (Bmis), John D. Mayer, Yvonne N. Gaschke
UNH Personality Lab
The BMIS scale is an open-source mood scale consisting of 16 mood-adjectives to which a person responds (e.g., Are you "happy"?). The scale can yield measures of overall pleasant-unpleasant mood, arousal-calm mood, and it also can be scored according to positive-tired and negative-calm mood.

Handwriting Size, Expansiveness And The Height Of "I" As A Projection Of Self-Concept, Barbara A. Reasor
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Self-confidence and self-esteem have long been thought ta be key factors in the successful achievement of career goals. Same of the areas that society use as measures of success are achievement in school, maintaining a jab, and financial independence. Conversely, law self-esteem has been associated with failure ta achieve in school, the inability to maintain a jab, and dependence an others for support. In addition certain anti-social behaviors manifested in delinquency, substance abuse and destructive behaviors have been associated with law self-concept (Brill, Crumpton~ Grayson , 1971; Krug~ Henry ,1974; Hur lock ,1967) .
Acquisition And Application Of Expertise At Computer Text Editing By Younger And Older Adults, Alan Hartley, Joellen T. Hartley
Acquisition And Application Of Expertise At Computer Text Editing By Younger And Older Adults, Alan Hartley, Joellen T. Hartley
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
Groups of younger and older adults learned to use a computer text editor. Measures of both knowledge and performance were collected at regular intervals. Better recall of material learned was correlated with better performance; there were no age group differences in recalled knowledge or in performance. Models of more skilled individuals showed richer knowledge representations and more sophisticated performance rules than models of less skilled individuals. Age accounted for very little of the variation in skilled performance.
Balls, Strikes, And Norms: Rule Violations And Normative Rules Among Baseball Umpires, David W. Rainey, Janet D. Larsen
Balls, Strikes, And Norms: Rule Violations And Normative Rules Among Baseball Umpires, David W. Rainey, Janet D. Larsen
Psychology
This study investigated the use of normative rules by baseball umpires. Normative rules are informal standards of conduct that deviate from the official rules of sport. Sixteen umpires, 25 coaches, and 27 baseball players defined the official upper and lower boundaries of the strike zone, marked these official boundaries on a Strike Zone Form, and marked where they actually call, or believe umpires call, the boundaries. Umpires were significantly more knowledgeable about rules than players were. Umpires reported setting the upper boundary of the strike zone significantly lower (an average of 2.64 inches) than the official rule specifies. Coaches and …

The Popularity Of Integration Models, 1980-1985, James D. Foster
The Popularity Of Integration Models, 1980-1985, James D. Foster
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Farnsworth’s five integration models were used to categorize integration articles published in the Journal of Psychology and Theology between 1980 and 1985. In addition, the graduate education of article authors was examined to determine if educational background influenced integration approach. Of the 177 articles reviewed, 52 reported research and 76 were considered integration articles. Results of the review indicate that one integration model accounts for nearly two-thirds of the integration work presented in JPT during this period and that differences in educational preparation do not produce preferences for particular integration approaches.

Child Language, The Emergence Of Vocal Requests For Absent Objects As A Function Of Preferred Operations And, Kay Lewis Tim
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Intellectually normal young children learn to request absent but needed objects which they are able to name. The primary focus of my study of child language in context was to assess the motivational effect of operation or stimulus preference on Lhe rate of toy request acquisition and the formation of stimulus classes (stimulus equivalences) . Of 13 21- to 37- month-old day-care children screened for generalized request responses (novel requests) , 1 girl and 4 boys participated in the training program because they were unable to request. Two of 4 children who completed training showed some support for the effect …

Enhancing Undergraduate Achievement In Educational Psychology With Instructional Objectives, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Rasmussen, Rosemary Nieto, Cheryl Sims
Publications and Research
Two quasi-experiments were conducted to assess the effects of exposure to instructional objectives on the achievement of undergraduates enrolled in an educational psychology course. Students enrolled in morning and afternoon course sections during the fall semester did not receive objects. Comparable students enrolled in morning and afternoon sections of the course during the subsequent spring semester did. Regression analyses that controlled for age and past achievement indicated that among afternoon classes, exposure to objectives improved performance on the midterm and final exams by at least 7 points. No significant effects were found for the morning classes. It was argued that …

Comparative Psychology And The Recursive Structure Of Filter Explanations, Peter Lipton, Nicholas S. Thompson
Comparative Psychology And The Recursive Structure Of Filter Explanations, Peter Lipton, Nicholas S. Thompson
Faculty Works
Examines 1 of 2 filter theories that may interact in comparative psychology: Darwin's theory of natural selection. Natural selection and learning theory (the other filter theory) claim that current features of an organism's behavior or structure are filtered out of a range of earlier features. While Darwinian explanations are rarely circular, they have a peculiar logical structure that makes them easy to confuse with circular explanations and are vulnerable to other explanatory hazards. Ambivalence concerning Darwin's theory and sources of confusion from which questions about the theory arise are addressed. Implications for evolutionists are discussed.

A Controlled Evaluation Of Devotional Meditation And Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Charles R. Carlson, Panayiota E. Bacaseta, Dexter A. Simanton
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
The present study was conducted to determine the effects of devotional meditation (DM), defined as a period of prayer and quiet reading and pondering of biblical material, on physiological and psychological variables related to stress. It was hypothesized that religious persons engaging in DM experience physiological and psychological changes similar to those reported for persons using progressive relaxation (PR) exercises. Thirty-six participants, equally divided by sex into 3 groups: DM, PR, and a Wait List Control, underwent extensive psychophysiological assessment prior to and following a systematic introductio to either DM or PR. The hypothesis that DM could generate positive physiological …
