The Prediction Of Drug Experimentation Among University Students Using Objective Personality Inventories, Gay Lynne Andrucci
The Prediction Of Drug Experimentation Among University Students Using Objective Personality Inventories, Gay Lynne Andrucci
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study examined the relationships of five self-report assessment measures and university students' drug experimentation across nine drug categories. A total of 74 undergraduate psychology students, 53 females and 21 males participated in the study. The test battery included forms A and B of the Sixteen Personality Factors (16PF), the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC) of the MMPI, Costa and McCrae's Five- Factor Model of personality, and the Sensation Seeking Scales (SSS). Segal's (1973) Alcohol-Drug Use Research Survey (ADRS) was employed as the drug-experimentation measure. Drug categories included alcohol, amphetamines, barbiturates, caffeine, cocaine, hallucinogens, marijuana, narcotics, and tobacco. Two series of …

Dual Task Performance: The Effects Of Task Emphasis And Ear Of Input, Pamela R. Jordan
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This experiment explored the lateralization of the processing of spatial and verbal information during dual-tasks. This study also investigated the relationship between right ear advantage and spatial ability, degree of handedness, and degree of familial handedness. Thirty-two male subjects performed a spatial rotation task and a dichotic listening task. During half of the dual tasks, subjects concentrated on both tasks equally. During the other half of the dual trials, 16 subjects emphasized the spatial processing task and 16 subjects emphasized the dichotic listening task. The results of this experiment do not support either the independent-hemispheric resources or the task-hemispheric integrity …
The Assessment Of Imagery Scales As Potential Predictors Of The Effectiveness Of Thermal Biofeedback Training, Douglas A. Thomas
The Assessment Of Imagery Scales As Potential Predictors Of The Effectiveness Of Thermal Biofeedback Training, Douglas A. Thomas
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Based on the theories pioneered by Sargent, Green, and Walters (1972) in the treatment of migraine headaches, this study has examined the relationship between imagery skills and thermal biofeedback abilities. A counterbalanced design was used to train subjects to cool and warm their hands. They were also given four imagery tasks - the Betts QMI, Verbalizer-Visualizer questionnaire, Paivio's Task, and Block Design task. The results indicated that subjects were capable of controlling hand temperature changes, and subjects trained initially in cooling were more effective at subsequent hand warming, positive transfer. No transfer was found from warming to cooling. Of the …

Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test Norms For Preadolescents, Donna Homer
Student Work
The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test is an easily administered assessment technique designed to measure immediate memory span and provide a learning curve. It consists of six trials of a 15-word list with an intervening task between Trials 5 and 6 . However, norms were established in France several years ago. To update the norms the AVLT was administered to 236 children between the ages of 9 and 12. The students are representative of preadolescents in a large urban school district. Means and standard deviations are provided for each of seven trials, their repetitions, and additions.
Findings from this study generally …

In order to assess the validity of models of human learning and performance to real world aviation system design, a complex computer-based helicopter flight simulation was designed. This multi-task simulation, hosted on an IRIS visual graphics display system linked to an IBM AT, is described. Its relevance for the validity models of concurrent task interaction, of training, and of navigation and spatial cognition is discussed.
An Exploratory Analysis On The Situational Determinants Of Jealousy, Renee Jean Baldwin
An Exploratory Analysis On The Situational Determinants Of Jealousy, Renee Jean Baldwin
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to transcend the trait and affective boundaries in order to account for the situational and cognitive variables which provoke the responses elicited by jealous emotion. The focus of the study is comprised of two major objectives: (1). To discover and define the structural dimensions associated with people's conceptions of jealous situations and (2) to deter mine whether there are gender differences in the interpretation and conceptualization of jealous emotion. Thirty-one undergraduate psychology students participated in the study. A cluster analysis was performed on the co-occurrence of situations. Five major categories of the situational determinants …
Evaluation Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test With A Social Phobic Population, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg, Robert E. Becker
Evaluation Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test With A Social Phobic Population, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg, Robert E. Becker
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The convergent and discriminant validity of the Social Interaction Self-Statement Test (SISST) were evaluated in a sample of men and women awaiting treatment for fear and avoidance of social interactions. Partial correlations revealed that negative, but not positive, self-statement scores were generally related to self-report measures of anxiety and depression. Heart rate and subjective anxiety ratings derived from a behavioral simulation of a personally relevant anxiety-provoking situation were unrelated to SISST scores. However, subjects’ reports of negative thoughts obtained via the thought-listing procedure were related to the SISST negative self-statement scores, suggesting that the negative subscale of the SISST and …
The Effects Of A Wilderness/Adventure Program On The Self-Concept, Locus Of Control Orientation, And Interpersonal Behavior Of Delinquent Adolescents, Timothy J. Zwart
The Effects Of A Wilderness/Adventure Program On The Self-Concept, Locus Of Control Orientation, And Interpersonal Behavior Of Delinquent Adolescents, Timothy J. Zwart
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 26-day therapeutic wilderness program for delinquent adolescent males on three conceptually distinct but closely related constructs: self-concept, locus of control orientation, and interpersonal behavior. Justification for the study was derived from the limitations of past wilderness/adventure research which suggested that there was a need for additional research on the effects of this type of alternative program for delinquent adolescents.
It was hypothesized that following participation in this program the youths would exhibit increased self-concept, more internal locus of control orientation, would express higher needs for inclusion and affection …
Self-Control: Effects Of Ratio Size, Intra-Delay Reinforcers, And Response Requirement, Elbert Q. Blakely Jr.
Self-Control: Effects Of Ratio Size, Intra-Delay Reinforcers, And Response Requirement, Elbert Q. Blakely Jr.
Dissertations
This study tested the following hypotheses: (a) The preference reversal phenomenon will be found when the delays to reinforcement are defined by fixed-ratio schedules, (b) The preference reversal phenomenon will be observed when intra-delay reinforcers are programmed, and (c) Imposing response requirements during the delay to reinforcement will affect preference for a larger delayed reinforcer over a smaller more immediate reinforcer. In Experiment 1, pigeons chose between two schedules, each a sequence of two fixed-ratio schedules. The second schedule of one sequence offered a small reinforcer and the second schedule of the alternative offered a larger reinforcer. The latter sequence …

The Effect Of Internal Vs. External Attributions And Level Of Information On Perceptions And Concessions In A Conflict Situation, William Walter Docalovich
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated predicted concessions and subject impressions of internally vs. externally motivated opponents in a conflict situation. One hundred and twenty undergraduate subjects read brief scenarios that presented opening statements made by opponents in a negotiation involving the division of excess funds in an organization. The opponent asked for 80% of the excess money and either blamed external or internal reasons for not conciliating. Half the subjects were also presented with additional information regarding the opponent's prior behavior along the dimensions of consistency, consensus and distinctiveness. It was hypothesized that attribution would interact with additional information so that external …

Spatial Memory In Pigeons On A Four-Arm Radial Maze, Robert H.I. Dale
Spatial Memory In Pigeons On A Four-Arm Radial Maze, Robert H.I. Dale
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Pigeon spatial memory was examined using a four-arm radial maze. The maze had four arms, spaced at 90° intervals, extending radially from a central choice area. Subjects were forced into three arms, then permitted two choices to enter the remaining ann. Five subjects chose accurately (90% correct) with delays of 5 min or less, their choices depended on extramaze cues, and the food in the target arm provided no essential cues. After an incorrect first choice, subjects' second choices were more accurate than chance. These data suggest that, while spatial memory has many similar characteristics in rats and pigeons, pigeon …
