Embedding Inclusive Excellence In An Academic Library: Strategic Planning & Infrastructure Considerations, Ione T. Damasco Nov 2022

Embedding Inclusive Excellence In An Academic Library: Strategic Planning & Infrastructure Considerations, Ione T. Damasco

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

While many of our libraries have issued public statements declaring a commitment to greater diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), many of us have struggled with how to move beyond words to enacting sustained, anti-oppressive actions. We will look at one library that used a multi-pronged, stepped approach to embed inclusive excellence as a framework in every department. Inclusive excellence recognizes an institution’s ability to succeed is dependent upon how fully it values, engages, and includes the rich diversity of each of its members. First, the library formalized its diversity committee, developing a charge and requiring representation from each department. Second, …

Faculty and doctoral students can use this card-accessible space for collegial interaction, independent learning, collaboration, professional development, and private reading and writing. In September 2021, the presenter attended the UD Inclusive Excellence Academy that explored the ideas behind brick-and-mortar inclusive spaces and ways to work toward an atmosphere that enables belonging, sharing and creativity for working and/or teaching. The presenter will share how she collaborated with library faculty and staff to create messaging to …

Making Memes: Teaching Visual Literacy In A (Fun) Remote Environment, Jillian M. Ewalt, Bridget Retzloff

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

How can you use humor to relieve pandemic fatigue while teaching visual literacy? At the University of Dayton, librarians developed an asynchronous session on visual literacy and internet memes. The session introduced students to fair use, public domain and Creative Commons images and tools for determining how they could be remixed or reused. The interactive tutorial included an active learning component where students created their own fun and lighthearted memes. Memes were shared with permission via the library’s social media channels and not only showcased student work but built community through humor in spite of pandemic isolation. This poster covers …

Libraries are places that hold the ability to connect people from different backgrounds and life experiences. However, despite that being the goal, sometimes stories are left out, experiences aren’t told, and identities are not represented. In this keynote address, Ione Damasco shares how her library has been able to make connections across campus with partners to develop and implement programming that fosters a more inclusive campus environment and how other libraries might do the same.

From Being To Doing: Anti-Racism As Action At Work, Ione T. Damasco Oct 2020

From Being To Doing: Anti-Racism As Action At Work, Ione T. Damasco

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Over the past few years, the conversation around equity in libraries has focused on thinking of the word ally as a verb, rather than as an identity. With recent events highlighting specific issues around race, the conversation has now shifted to many people wanting to be anti-racist. In this session, we will focus on anti-racism as action, rather than using the word anti-racist as identity. In particular, we will examine our notions of professionalism in libraries. Can changing how we define professionalism in library workplaces be an example of anti-racist action?

We will take a critical look at how certain …

Learning To Listen Up: Advocating For And Collaborating With Student Employees For A More Effective Workforce, Heidi Gauder, Heather Ruch, Cristin Bushnell

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Student employees are a vital part of this library’s workforce. Without them, it would be difficult to sustain the services we provide. Over the last few years, we have developed a more deliberate approach to student employee hiring and training, emphasizing their roles within the library mission and the value of their library jobs in preparation for the workforce. This process has taken time, mandatory training, good humor, and food. The work within public services really coalesced with the hiring of the student coordinator for public services. Tasked with uniting and supervising a workforce of 30, the coordinator commenced this …

Discovering Digital Archives: A Successful Collaboration Between Archivists And Technical Services Librarians, Christina A. Beis, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services increases the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at a medium-sized institution had been using Archive-It to collect websites for a few years, but the information was isolated in a separate platform and wasn't effectively marketed to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the website collections into the discovery layer. Metadata was added at the seed level and indexed on a single, user-friendly platform. Attendees learned about implementing digital archive collections and explored how to increase their visibility through marketing.

Cultivating Instruction Team Success With Low-Stakes Assessment Experiments, Heidi Gauder Nov 2018

Cultivating Instruction Team Success With Low-Stakes Assessment Experiments, Heidi Gauder

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Assessment of student learning has been a component of this instruction team’s workload, but the approach was narrow, and responsibility was not equally shared. The instruction assessment efforts were based on quiz results from online tutorials administered by certain team members. When the tutorial quiz scores remained consistent over time, the responsible librarians decided that it was no longer useful to conduct an annual tutorial assessment. With the support of the library assessment committee chair, instruction team members were asked to try their hands at assessment using techniques of their own choosing with a class that they selected. Thus, the …

Behind The Scenes, Ready For Action: Cultivating And Conveying A Large-Scale Humanities Monograph Weeding Project With Campus Stakeholders, Heidi Gauder, Fred W. Jenkins

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Weeding books is a scary prospect for many librarians and faculty, particularly for humanities faculty, since monographs are critical scholarship in those disciplines. At this library, a renovation in one area created the need for a large-scale review of monograph collections in other areas. Library leadership began conversations with campus stakeholders early on, emphasizing renovation needs and outcomes, careful deselection methods, stakeholder opportunities for input, and sustainable collections. In the Fall 2017 semester, all subject librarians began identifying relevant titles for deselection and communicating with departments about the process. The Humanities librarians found themselves making additional collection considerations and working …

This mutually beneficial process led to the Libraries to a user-centric mindset to reimagine space as service; patrons as creators; and a new space-sharing collaboration to further leverage an upcoming renovation. Presenters discussed lessons learned and future iterations of the studio.

Tracking For Outreach: Using Data For Cross-Unit Purposes, Heidi Gauder, Hector Escobar

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Purpose: Since creating an information commons a couple years ago, this library’s research team has been coordinating data gathering methods with the writing center. With both units using standard check-in procedures at a shared desk and hosting in-depth consultations in a shared space, it made sense to share technologies. Since Spring 2015, we have logged students for research consultations with software that is commonly used by writing centers, tutoring and other academic support units. We are not only able to count the number of consultations, but we are also able to record cross-referrals with the writing center, calculate average consultation …

Purpose: Public service hours for many academic librarians have changed within the last decade. As reference statistics have declined, so have job descriptions changed. We often hear terms like outreach, liaison work, embedded librarianship, consulting hours, scheduled appointments. etc., for what used to be normal desk hours. With a changing service model, comes accountability. How do institutions account for these new forms of work and duties that have replaced traditional service desk hours? How does this feed into performance or merit review?

The purpose of this short paper is to shed light on the roles of librarians at medium-sized universities, …
