Using Rubrics For Information Literacy Skill Assessment: A Case Study For Business Education, Bobbi Makani, Ann Agee, Marilyn Easter, Yuhfen Diana H. Wu
Diana H. Wu
Information literacy—the ability to find, evaluate and use information effectively—is an essential skill set. The authors examine how assignments such as case analyses and research reports help business students master these abilities and provide examples of how analytic rubrics with measurable outcomes are particularly suited to assessing these skills. Also demonstrated is how librarians enhance and support student learning of information literacy by teaching in-depth research skills. Working together, professors and librarians can give students a solid foundation in the information-handling skills they need to be effective and productive in the workplace today.

Data, Data Practices, And Data Curation, Part Ii, Christine Borgman
Data, Data Practices, And Data Curation, Part Ii, Christine Borgman
Christine L. Borgman
In today’s technology-intensive research environments, petabytes of data may be produced in a matter of days, weeks, or months. Those data may be lost in a similar amount of time if they are not captured, curated, and marked up in ways that allow for discovery and reuse by others. Datasets large and small can be very useful not only to researchers, but also to students, to the general public, and to policy makers. Among the classes of data of broad general interest are scientific records of the climate, the skies and galaxies, plant and animal species, social and economic observations, …

Within today's information society, the most important learning outcome for all human is their being able to function as independent lifelong learners through lifelong learning. But what actually is the Lifelong Learning? Universally, educators refer it as a continuous gaining of knowledge, skills and understandings from the “cradle to the grave”. Similarly, libraries are considering as one of the perfect places for developing knowledge, skills and understanding since civilization emerged. Libraries are the wonderful gathering places to pursue knowledge, whether you are student, teacher, parent, laborer, employed or unemployed. ....

Connecting Research On Social Issues In Nanotechnology: The Center For Nanotechnology In Society At Arizona State University, Jan Youtie, Philip Shapira
Philip Shapira
Central to the emergence of new research topics is the creation of a research network. This paper looks at the creation of a network of researchers of social issues in nanotechnology and the role of the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at Arizona State University (CNS-ASU) in the creation of this network. While there has been US investment in societal research on nanotechnology, a debate exists about the extent to which a research community has been created through these investments. This paper uses three approaches to examine the extent to which CNS-ASU is associated with the development of a research …

Drawing Information In The Classroom, Jenna Hartel
Drawing Information In The Classroom, Jenna Hartel
Jenna Hartel
Information lies at the center of information studies, the information professions, and information education. Yet there are few agreed upon pedagogical strategies for engaging students in our central concept. In many educational programs the nature of information is assumed to be obvious and therefore left uninterrogated. Alternatively, students may be asked to read articles, such as "Information as Thing" (Buckland, 1991), in conjunction with a lecture, class discussion, or writing assignment. To expand the available options, this brief communication offers educators in information studies a new, arts-based, participatory approach for teaching about information itself.

This panel presents current information behaviour research in the context of leisure. It continues a tradition of locating work within the theoretical framework of leisure, the Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP). Five years has passed since the last public discussion of this topic at an ASIS&T Annual Meeting and in the intervening time much progress has been made in understanding leisure information phenomena. Our goals are to stimulate interest in leisure as a setting for information behaviour scholarship; provide a status report on the topic; and introduce new ideas associated with digital gaming, fun, and happiness. The panel includes four concise …

An Arts-Informed Study Of Information Using The Draw-And-Write Technque, Jenna Hartel
Jenna Hartel
There are untold conceptions of information in information science, and yet the nature of information remains obscure and contested. This article contributes something new to the conversation as the first arts-informed, visual, empirical study of information utilizing the drawand- write technique. To approach the concept of information afresh, graduate students at a North American iSchool were asked to respond to the question “What is information?” by drawing on a 4- by 4-inch piece of paper, called an iSquare. One hundred thirty-seven iSquares were produced and then analyzed using compositional interpretation combined with a theoretical framework of graphic representations. The findings …

Measuring Social Capital And Its Influence On Individual Performance, Alireza Abbasi
Alireza Abbasi
Studies on social networks highlight the importance of network structure or structural properties of a given network and its impact on performance outcome. One of the important properties of this network structure is referred as “social capital” which is the “network of contacts” and the associated values attached to these networks of contacts. In this study, the aim is to provide empirical evidence of the influence of social capital and performance within the context of academic collaboration (co-authorship). This study suggests that the collaborative process involves social capital embedded within relationships and network structures among direct co-authors. Thus, association between …

Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz
Celia Emmelhainz
This article seeks to outline the use of controlled vocabulary standards for qualitative datasets in cultural anthropology, which are increasingly held in researcher-accessible government repositories and online digital libraries. As a humanistic science that can address almost any aspect of life with meaning to humans, cultural anthropology has proven difficult for librarians and archivists to effectively organize. Yet as anthropology moves onto the web, the challenge of organizing and curating information within the field only grows. In considering the subject classification of digital information in anthropology, I ask how we might best use controlled vocabularies for indexing digital anthropological data. …
