Certification Of Pondok Pesantren As Professional Nazhir To Develop Productive Waqf, Salawat Fatih Ibrahim
Certification Of Pondok Pesantren As Professional Nazhir To Develop Productive Waqf, Salawat Fatih Ibrahim
Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
Waqf is one of the potential financial instruments in Islamic economics. As a country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia has responded positively to developments in the waqf model, especially productive waqf. The waqf potential predicted in 2024 will reach 71.8 trillion, while the realization of waqf is only 199 billion. This means that there is a gap of up to 71.6 trillion between the waqf potential and its realization. This occurs as a result of the lack of knowledge about waqf, including nazhir as the manager of waqf assets. Moreover, the majority of nazirs in Indonesia …

The Urgency And Strategic Role Of Maqasid Shari'ah And Maslahah In Responding To The Legal And Economic Challenges Of Muslim Business, Fadhli Suko Wiryanto
Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
The study of maqashid shari'ah began to receive intensive attention after the Prophet's death, especially when the Companions were faced with new problems and social changes that had never occurred when the Prophet Muhammad was still alive. With the existence of social changes as a result of the demands of the times and the dynamics of society, thus demanding the creativity of the friends seriously to conduct a study of the maqashid shari'ah as an effort to make legal breakthroughs to anticipate social changes that occur. Maqashid shari'ah and maslahat have a very urgent and strategic role to be used …

The Concept Of Hadith, Meaning, And Position Of Hadith, Implementation And Comparison In Hadith Learning Application: Hadith Encyclopedia And Hadith Collection, Nurul Anggraeni Shinta Ilahi, Nurwahidin Nurwahidin, Mohammad Izdiyan
Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
The rapid development of information and communication technology has added new perspectives to research on the concept of hadith, the meaning, and position of hadith, which can also be seen as an effort to improve, enforce, and preserve hadith among the Muslim community in the online realm. The results of this study identified two specific mobile applications, namely the Hadith Encyclopedia and the Hadith Collection. This research aims to test several mobile applications that can be used to speed up the learning process and show how simple the verification and authentication of a hadith is in modern times. Hadith data …
Philanthropic Traditions In Religions; A Comparative Study Of Jews, Islam, And Christianity, Ahmad Sobiyanto, Nurwahidin Nurwahidin
Philanthropic Traditions In Religions; A Comparative Study Of Jews, Islam, And Christianity, Ahmad Sobiyanto, Nurwahidin Nurwahidin
Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
The philanthropic tradition is one of the recommended acts of worship in Islam which is part of the pillar of Islam, zakat. However, it turns out that this tradition also developed in other religions and became interesting to learn. The purpose of this study is to describe qualitatively about philanthropic traditions in the teachings of major religions in the middle east, namely Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Descriptive qualitative method (using content analysis techniques) is a type of literature research through books, journals and other relevant sources used in this research. That the religions of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity each have …
Legitimacy In Conflict Contexts: Shifting Rebel Engagement In Sierra Leone And The Presence Of Private Contractors, Anne Lauder
Legitimacy In Conflict Contexts: Shifting Rebel Engagement In Sierra Leone And The Presence Of Private Contractors, Anne Lauder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The growth of non-state actors has significantly changed the nature of conflict. Rebel groups increasingly challenge state rule while private military and security companies (PMSCs) increasingly enter conflict spaces on behalf of a variety of actors, including states seeking to suppress insurgencies. This case study of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) during Sierra Leone’s civil war between 1991-2002 contributes to emerging work on rebel behavior by examining how rebel’s legitimacy-seeking behavior might evolve when PMSCs enter a conflict context. I explore the ways that PMSCs can shift perceived incentive structures surrounding insurgents’ interpretations of and engagements with legitimacy during conflict, …
Minority Language Education In Russia: An Example Of Social And Cultural Reproduction And Correspondence Theories, Nadezhda Braun
Minority Language Education In Russia: An Example Of Social And Cultural Reproduction And Correspondence Theories, Nadezhda Braun
Russian Language Journal
Russia is an incredibly diverse country, both linguistically and ethnically. However, Russia is often presented, and presents itself, as a monolith. Russia’s approach to minority language teaching further perpetuates this monolithic view by creating a hierarchical language structure with Russian at the top. This hierarchy is created through societal pressure, language requirements in the Russian education system, and the minimization of minority language instruction, in direct contrast to best practices for language instruction. Chuvash in Chuvashia and Nenets, Khanty, and Selkup in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug serve as examples of this linguistic hierarchy. This paper uses social and cultural reproduction …
Multigenerational Coresidence And Parental Time In Developmental Childcare In China, Cheng Cheng, Menghan Zhao
Multigenerational Coresidence And Parental Time In Developmental Childcare In China, Cheng Cheng, Menghan Zhao
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Previous literature has examined how multigenerational coresidence changes parental time in primary childcare. However, much less is known about how coresidence may affect the amount of time parents invest in developmental childcare, which is crucial for children’s education and life chances. Using longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies 2010-2018, we examine how parental time investment in developmental childcare varies by household structure and parental and grandparental education. Results suggest that coresidence with maternal grandparents increases mothers’ time in developmental childcare among children with high-educated parents. Moreover, the positive effect of matrilocal residence on maternal time investment is greatest …
Understanding The Dilemma Of Chinese Farmers' Cooperatives: A Chayanov Perspective, Zhanping Hu, Qian Forrest Zhang, John A. Donaldson
Understanding The Dilemma Of Chinese Farmers' Cooperatives: A Chayanov Perspective, Zhanping Hu, Qian Forrest Zhang, John A. Donaldson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Chayanov’s The Theory of Peasant Cooperatives has been read as a work advocating the viability and even superiority of peasant cooperatives as compared to capitalist farming, we contend that it actually provides the strongest analysis of why most peasant cooperatives are doomed to fail. Chayanov identified five major obstacles peasant cooperatives face, and those obstacles push cooperatives into a vicious circle. Without powerful state support, it is nearly impossible to break the vicious circle. Based on 65 typical cooperatives from 20 provinces, this paper illustrates how these obstacles that Chayanov identified are precisely the reasons why almost all the cooperatives …
Growing Up Under Mao And Deng: On The Ideological Determinants Of Corporate Policies, Hao Liang, Rong Wang, Haikun Zhu
Growing Up Under Mao And Deng: On The Ideological Determinants Of Corporate Policies, Hao Liang, Rong Wang, Haikun Zhu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Historically, economic activities have been organized around certain ideologies. We investigate the impact of politicians’ ideology on corporate policies by exploring a unique setting of ideological change—China from Mao to Deng around the 1978 economic reform—in a regression discontinuity framework. We find that the age discontinuity of politicians around 18 years old in 1978, who had already joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or joined soon thereafter and later became municipal paramount leaders, has had a lasting effect on contemporary firm- and city-level policies. In particular, firms in cities with mayors that joined the CCP under the ideological regime of …

Measuring The Learning Effectiveness Of Two Courses In A Program In Accounting Data And Analytics, Clarence Goh, Duan Ning, Magdeleine Lew, Gary Pan, Poh Sun Seow
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Driven by rapid technological innovation, information technology (IT) is expected to significantly alter the way that accountants work. However, both accounting researchers and practitioners have observed a shortage of accounting professionals who currently possess the relevant technology skillsets to exploit technological advances. In response, the School of Accountancy of a Singapore-based university launched a second major program in Accounting Data and Analytics in 2018. In this study, we examine the learning effectiveness of two courses – Business Data Management and Data Modelling & Visualization – offered as part of the program. Overall, our results suggest that the courses are effective …

The Effect Of Risk Profile In Pandemi Outbreak To Banking Financial Performance Case Study In Indonesia, Fajar Abdullah
Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies
The risk profile that occurred within the scope of banking during the Covid 19 pandemic which was quantitatively reflected in the microeconomic ratios of the BOPO, NPF/NPL, FDR/LDR ratios, and macroeconomics in this case, inflation and the USD exchange rate, were the main factors in the decline in the soundness level bank which is reflected in the value of the bank's financial performance ratio, namely Return on Assets due to. The objects in this study are the general Islamic and conventional banking industry, with data observations including BOPO, NPF/NPL, FDR/LDR, inflation, and the USD exchange rate. By comparing the effect …
Equity In Commerce: Too Much And Too Little?, Man Yip
Equity In Commerce: Too Much And Too Little?, Man Yip
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The interaction and clash between equity and commerce have attracted much attention from judges and academics in recent years. Commercial lawyers may complain about equity introducing uncertainty into commercial endeavours and at times, (mis-)applying the ‘moral standards of the vicarage’ to actors in commercial dealings. However, the objections are not directed at all aspects of equity, but are usually addressed to some ‘disfavoured parts of it’, such as the creation of a new obligation or discretionary remedies. On the other hand, from the perspective of equity lawyers, equity’s interplay with commerce may lead to the contractualisation or commercialisation of equitable …
Singapore Management University (Smu): Tracking The Strategy Evolution Of A Start-Up University, Michelle P. Lee, Howard Thomas, Alex Wilson
Singapore Management University (Smu): Tracking The Strategy Evolution Of A Start-Up University, Michelle P. Lee, Howard Thomas, Alex Wilson
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The year 2020 marked the 20th anniversary of the Singapore Management University (SMU). SMU exists in an ecosystem for higher education that is quite unlike what one might find in other parts of the world. The supportive and stable environment the Singapore government provided in terms of its funding and policies meant a more predictable environment within which a university can make long-range planning. Singapore's development since its independence in 1965 has been undergirded by the belief that a strong educational system is the backbone of the country's economic development. The Era of Evolution is a story of both implementation …
Squeezed Out By The Market, Seeking Strength In The Network: Makeshift Temples And The Spatio-Affective Logics Of Survival In Singapore, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong
Squeezed Out By The Market, Seeking Strength In The Network: Makeshift Temples And The Spatio-Affective Logics Of Survival In Singapore, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper offers an understanding of the spatio-affective workings of religious organisations – and the marketplaces they operate in and through – that go beyond capitalist logics. We do so by examining how makeshift temples representing various forms of ‘Chinese religion’ survive in Singapore. Capitalist logics fail to explain how such marginal and precarious religious organisations, which might be ‘squeezed out’ by the market, nonetheless manage to survive amid competition. Moreover, scarce attention has been paid to how religion as a social-affective system might mediate the functioning of a religious market. This paper fills the lacuna by bringing an understanding …
Chinese Global Orders: Socialism, Tradition, And Nation In China-Russia Relations, William A. Callahan
Chinese Global Orders: Socialism, Tradition, And Nation In China-Russia Relations, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
While many use rational IR theory to explain Chinese foreign policy behavior, this paper follows global IR to employ interpretivist theory to examine how Chinese elites understand their country’s role in the world. In particular, it explores the Chinese global order ideas of socialism, tradition, and nation through a comparative analysis of how they work in China–Russia relations, especially after China’s 20th Communist Party Congress in 2022. The first section presents a critical analysis of the realist understanding of the China–Russia–U.S. strategic triangle. It argues that the socialist concept of “united front work” better explains Chinese (and Russian) policy in …
Marginal To Whom? Reflections On Gow’S "Purús Song", Magnus Course
Marginal To Whom? Reflections On Gow’S "Purús Song", Magnus Course
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This paper constitutes a personal exploration of the impact of the work of Peter Gow on my own attempts to think through specific ethnographic problems, both in the Mapuche communities of Southern Chile and the Gaelic communities of Western Scotland. I focus in particular on how Gow’s lesser-known essay “Purús Song” inverts received wisdom about the relationships between center and periphery, and between nation-state and Indigenous people. I see this as one iteration of Gow’s broader aim of letting ethnographic realities transform theoretical complacencies.

Indigenous Transformations In The Comunidad Nativa: Rethinking Kinship And Its Limitations In An Expanding Resource Frontier, Evan Killick, Juan Pablo Sarmiento Barletti
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In Of Mixed Blood, Peter Gow sets out an account of the transformations of kinship and the construction of social relations among Indigenous, mainly Yine (Piro), people of the Bajo Urubamba valley in the early 1980s, when Peru’s “Comunidades Nativas” (“Native Communities”) were receiving their new official titles. We revisit Peter’s proposition by comparing it our more recent ethnographic engagements with Indigenous Asháninka/Ashéninka communities in the region. While tracing continuities from his observations, we also show how social relations now play out in different ways, as certain important resources have become scarcer and the need for …

Interviewing Peter Gow — Dundee, June 24, 2017, Ana Maria R. Gomes, Paulo Maia Figueiredo, Pedro Rocha De Almeida E Castro, Roberto R. Romero Jr.
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This interview presents an initial dialogue about Peter Gow’s trajectory as an anthropologist, trying to bring to light particularly the fieldwork experiences and events that it had not been possible to commenton and explore in the published material. Its aim is to understand more closely the particular ways in which Peter Gow had come to arrive at the insights and the analyses presented in his brilliant ethnographies with the Yine/Piro people of Amazonia.

Civilized Elders And Isolated Ancestors: The Multiple Histories Of Contemporary Amazonia, Casey High
Civilized Elders And Isolated Ancestors: The Multiple Histories Of Contemporary Amazonia, Casey High
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In this article I consider the impact of Peter Gow’s writing on indigenous histories as a key area of research on Amazonia. Building on his study of kinship as history on the Bajo Urubamba (1991) he presented a regional perspective on the dynamic social categories by which Amazonian people understand their relations with various “others.” Focusing on indigenous agency and modes of thought, Gow challenged certain lines of historical thinking that dominated anthropology at the time. I explore how his ethnographic approach to history has influenced a generation of regional scholarship, including my own work on memory and social transformation …

“Helpless”: Reflections On Grief And Sociality In Three Amerindian Societies, Giovanna Bacchiddu, Elizabeth Ewart, Courtney Stafford-Walter
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In this article, we reflect on one of Peter Gow’s key pieces of work, “Helpless,” tracing how his scholarship has informed and influenced our own work, from our experiences in the field to our approaches to analysis. We explore some of the main themes from this piece of writing, including how intersubjectivity is produced by creating relations of mutual dependence—a precondition for sociality. Helplessness is a characteristic of newborn babies as much as it is of those recently bereaved. In both cases, memories of love and care—in short, kinship—are in question. For babies, kin relations have not yet been produced, …

Desire, Difference, And Productivity: Reflections On “The Perverse Child” And Its Continued Relevance, Christopher Hewlett
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article is concerned with the relationships through which children have been born, raised, and made into Amahuaca people over the past 75 years, and within contemporary Native Communities on the Inuya River since their formation beginning in the 1980s. The process of making children into kin among Amahuaca people is similar to that described throughout much of lowland South America. The production, preparation, and sharing of proper food (manioc, plantains, fish, and game) as well as manioc beer are central aspects of sociality and the formation of specific kinds of bodies. While the processes of sharing substances, demonstrating care, …

Analysis Of Us-Nato Entanglement In Russo-Ukrainian Conflict: 'Western Axis' An Effort To Contain China In Europe, Syifa Maulidina, Oddie Bagus Saputra
Journal of Terrorism Studies
The Ukraine-Russia conflict is a complex one. Some countries intend to defend national interests regarding border areas, energy sources, and international trade routes such as the United States, NATO, and China. The United States-NATO is trying to maintain the status quo over the Euro-Arctic region. Meanwhile, China took advantage of this conflict to expand into the European market. In addition, China has also benefited in the military sector to modernize its military arsenal and cheap energy sources amid the global energy crisis from Russia. Therefore, to help the process of analyzing the issue, this study uses the concept of balancing …

The Impact Of Russia-Ukraine War On Energy Policy Maneuvers To Strengthen Energy Security And Cybersecurity In Indonesia, Bobby Adhityo Rizaldi, Abdi Manab Idris, Nurbaiti Nurbaiti
Journal of Terrorism Studies
The war between Russia and Ukraine is highly discussed in global geopolitics and geostrategy. The strategy of attacking Russia directly at the point of a vital national object, namely the power plant, which was preceded by a cyber attack at the Nuclear Power Plant in Chornobyl, followed by a conventional physical attack from the air, resulted in an energy crisis in Ukraine. The resulting war affects many sectors, such as the energy sector, food, and supply chains, especially (at the end of 2021) before the war. WTI oil price was only around 75$/barrel, but when the war broke out, the …

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is one of the regional organizations that aims to promote economic and security cooperation among its members in southeast Asia countries. In the dynamics of ASEAN’s journey, the most debated issue is enforcing human rights among ASEAN members. One of the bloodiest tragedies of human rights violations in Southeast Asia has known as the Maguindanao massacre in the Philippines. This research explores more profoundly the responses of the ASEAN on victims’ family requests in the case of the Maguindanao massacre. This research also applies the human rights regime theory to the role of …
Between Cocama And Modernity In The Ucamara (Peruvian Amazon), Marta Krokoszyńska
Between Cocama And Modernity In The Ucamara (Peruvian Amazon), Marta Krokoszyńska
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Combining a contemporary ethnographic perspective with a review of historical records, the article extends Peter Gow’s re-reading of the ex-Cocama phenomenon in the Western Amazon. It argues that the foundation of the Amazonian Peruvian town of Requena at the beginning of the 20th century took place during an important historical moment in the region. Within the post-rubber boom context, schools became a particularly important idiom that enabled Requena’s growth as the centre of education and modernity. The paper investigates relations between the widespread desire for education in the Ucamara region, and Cocama descendants’ and other “ribereño” ex-Mainas peoples’ specific notions …

Purpose: This paper aims to examine how the regional variable in country conflict modeling affects forecast accuracy and identifies a methodology to further improve the predictions.
Design/methodology/approach: This paper uses statistical learning methods to both evaluate the quantity of data for clustering countries along with quantifying accuracy according to the number of clusters used.
Findings: This study demonstrates that increasing the number of clusters for modeling improves the ability to predict conflict as long as the models are robust.
Originality/value: This study investigates the quantity of clusters used in conflict modeling, while previous research assumes a specific quantity before …
Obesity Risk And Comorbidities Among Colombians In New York City And In Colombia, Carlos A. Devia
Obesity Risk And Comorbidities Among Colombians In New York City And In Colombia, Carlos A. Devia
Dissertations and Theses
Introduction: The prevalence of obesity and overweight in adults and children continues to increase worldwide, accounting for the mortality and morbidity from several diseases. Obesity disproportionally impacts Latinos in the United States (U.S.), and despite their diversity in origins, ancestry, and culture, it is still unclear the burden of obesity by specific Latino groups. For example, little information is available about how obesity impacts Colombians in the U.S. (the largest South American population). New evidence also indicates that Latino immigrants may no longer be arriving with healthy weight status to the U.S. because Latin American countries are undergoing epidemiologic and …
