Preference By Sows For A Partially Enclosed Farrowing Crate, P. A. Phillips, D. Fraser, B. K. Thompson
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
A preference testing apparatus was designed to give sows continuous access to three farrowing crates with different degrees of visual enclosure. A ‘fully enclosed' crate had solid black panels on the sides and top of the crate, a ‘solid-sided’ crate had the side panels only and an ‘open crate’ had no solid panels over the crate's tubular framework. The crates radiated from a central area sufficient for sows to enter or leave any crate freely. Video recording was used to determine sow position from 3 days before to 6 days after farrowing. The results indicated that younger sows (second or …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki, as H. WENDELL HOWARD explains, focuses his works on understanding the life that death ends, a preoccupation informed by his Catholicism, Polish birth, and the events in Eastern Europe. Professor of English and Juilliard-trained musician, author of articles on literature and music, Howard has many publications to his credit, including a 1987 essay in these pages.
The roots of blues music, PATRICK J. O'CONNOR shows, were in the rural South, born of the disillusionment with the poverty of post-Civil War freedom and carried into the depths of urban America. Blues music was a direct response to …

The Commons: A Multidisciplinary Approach To Nonprofit Organization, Voluntary Action And Philanthropy, Roger A. Lohmann
The Commons: A Multidisciplinary Approach To Nonprofit Organization, Voluntary Action And Philanthropy, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The task of identifying nonprofit organizations, voluntary action and philanthropy as the principal constituents of a single "sector" within the larger economy, society and polity has been a central challenge for the multidisciplinary paradigm which seems to be emerging in this field. The concepts of the commons and common goods are presented as concepts with important multi-disciplinary implications. The commons is characterized by uncoerced participation, shared purposes and resources, mutuality and fairness and the derivative concept of common goods, as desirable ends which are universal and indivisible within a commons but not necessarily beyond. Taken together, commons and common goods …

It's that special time of year when for the maniacal sports fan there is a smorgasbord of events on the table. The NFL has opened with its new 17-week regular season format and without Joe Montana. The baseball pennant races are coming down to the wire, and both the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins are making their fans believe in miracles. College football is underway with FSU, Miami and Florida all ranked in the top five in most pre-season polls, and with both FSU and Miami winning impressively in their first game. Over the past ten days several world records …

The Organizational Impact Of Smoke Break Management In Strategic Air Command, Glenn G. Hinken
The Organizational Impact Of Smoke Break Management In Strategic Air Command, Glenn G. Hinken
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the organizational impact of smoke break management in Strategic Air Command. Analysis of data from a survey questionnaire showed that although the smoking and smoke break issues touched the majority of the people in SAC and almost every smoker surveyed reported taking smoke breaks, just 27 percent of respondents reported their organization had a smoke break policy. Most of these respondents indicated the policies were lenient in terms of regulating the time and duration of the breaks. Smokers reported spending an average 41.09 minutes per day taking smoke breaks. This figure differed significantly from the time smokers …
An Econometric Analysis Of The Nature And Causes Of Inflation In Nigeria, J. O. Asogu
An Econometric Analysis Of The Nature And Causes Of Inflation In Nigeria, J. O. Asogu
Economic and Financial Review
In this econometric revisitation of inflation in Nigeria, an extensive review of the literature and evidence has been attempted culminating in a specification of the various alternative hypotheses on the causes of inflation. While not ruling out the validity of several theories of inflation in the Nigerian situation, empirical evidence indicates that increases in real domestic produce or supply situation, especially food, and law cost of production of consumables, tended to ameliorate inflation. On the other hand, increases in government expenditure, especially deficits, tend to increase the money supply and worsen depreciation of the exchange rate, which in turn intensify …
A Review Of The Federal Government Fertilizer Subsidy Scheme In Nigeria, Grace O. Evbuomwan
A Review Of The Federal Government Fertilizer Subsidy Scheme In Nigeria, Grace O. Evbuomwan
Economic and Financial Review
This paper reviews the fertilizer subsidy scheme in Nigeria. Using descriptive statistics and econometric methods, the study shows that farmers' access to fertilizer has improved since the commencement of the subsidy scheme in 1976 and the direct involvement of the Federal Government in the procurement and distribution of the input. This also coincided with the period when remarkable improvements were recorded in the yield of virtually all the major crops, especially staples. The econometric analysis confirms that a positive correlation exists between fertilizer supply/consumption and output, while the level of subsidy on the input influences its consumption (utilization) and tends …
Stephen A. Meyer: "The U.S. As A Debtor Country: Causes, Prospects And Policy Implications" Business Review, Federal Reserve Bank Of Philadelphia, November/December, 1989 (13pp), P. I. Nwaoba
Economic and Financial Review
The author's focus in this paper is the analysis of the implications of increased net debt claims on the United States. In his opinion, while net inflow of foreign investment is welcome, there is the fear that excessive net claims on a country like U.S.A. may constitute a problem in the long-run. The author's concern centres on the probable adverse consequences of the growing status of U.S.A. as a net debtor nation and the implication for future generations of Americans in terms of standard of living and debt service burden. It is the author's view that this might also lead …
