Corporate Governance In India: Some Ground Realities, R H Patil
IIMB Management Review
While enhancing corporate governance standards deserves the attention it is receiving now, some stark realities need to be appreciated. While on this, should we not look at the co-operatives as well?

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
STEVEN VINCENT describes his attempt to come to terms with what he has seen in the killing fields of Cambodia, monuments to the Khmer Rouge's systematic destruction of Cambodians who had known or imagined life other than the rural peasant ideal their bloody torturers and murderers envisioned, even if this means not coming to terms with it at all but to accept its unacceptability, not to rationalize the irrational. Currently the senior writer for Art & Auction magazine where he writes about the international art world, and specifically the art market, he also contributes regularly to the Antique Collector, an …

Towards Understanding Why Assessment Centers Work: An Evaluation Of The Subtle Criterion Contamination Hypothesis, Christopher T. Rotolo
Towards Understanding Why Assessment Centers Work: An Evaluation Of The Subtle Criterion Contamination Hypothesis, Christopher T. Rotolo
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The success of the assessment center method in predicting job performance has been one of the most researched efforts in personnel psychology (Thornton, 1992). However, there is little reported evidence showing that assessment center procedures produce scores that serve as valid representations of separate constructs (Klimoski & Brickner, 1987). It is perhaps ironic, then, that despite the success stories, we still do not understand why assessment centers "work," (i.e., predict performance).
This study examined the subtle criterion contamination hypothesis as an explanation to assessment center validity. The subtle criterion contamination hypothesis states that assessment centers predict managerial performance because assessors …

On Sport and Society
If you are a lifer in Minnesota you are having the Final Four experience for the first time. As a Minnesotan-in-exile and an alumnus of Marquette University and Florida State University I have had the Final Four experience on other occasions. As a Gopher alumnus, however, it is a new and exciting experience.

On Sport and Society
It was about as varied a week in sport for me as I can remember. I have been off to western Canada where the big story was the Brier, or I guess I should say the Labatt's Brier, Canada's national curling championship, being contested in Calgary at the Saddl edome, or rather the Canadian Airlines Saddledome. Some things don't change even when you cross the 49th parallel. The television and newspapers were full of stories from the Brier, which drew almost a quarter of a million people to the Saddledome during the week, riveting the attention of a nation.

Iditarod: The Last Great Race On Earth, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It's the first week in March and in sporting terms that means it is the time of the first sounds of spring. No not the crack of the bat hitting ball, but the sounds of dogs barking and men and women urging them on down the trail. These are the sounds of "The Last Great Race on Earth," the Iditarod.

Determinants Of Currency Composition Of External Reserves In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Newman C. Oputa
Determinants Of Currency Composition Of External Reserves In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Newman C. Oputa
Economic and Financial Review
This paper discusses the determinants of the currency composition of external reserves in Nigeria. The empirical analysis reveals that the main factors influencing the currency composition of external reserves in Nigeria are international trade transactions and currency composition of external debt, while reserve adequacy aided the diversification into more currencies. Exchange and interest rates were relatively significant in the share of each currency in the reserve basket. A review of CBN's external reserves policy confirmed that vigorous diversification was embarked upon when there was remarkable increase in the level of the reserve. However, current CBN reserve management policy shows a …

Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan
Making Sense Of The Asian Success Story: An Integrative Framework, Chow Hou Wee, Gilbert Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The article focuses on Asian countries that have experienced economic growth over the past 50 years including Hong Kong, China; Japan; Singapore; South Korea and Taiwan. With the exception of Hong Kong, the economic success of the Asian countries has been attributed to the interventionist framework. Export-orientation is one strategy that is most associated with the success of the five Asian countries. The export-oriented strategy helped the five Asian countries in many ways. The ensuring growth of employment enabled the country to save and accumulate capital for reinvestment. The export-oriented strategy also positively affects the competitive advantages of the country. …

It is mid-February, just past mid-winter in those regions to our north. It is the shortest month, while at the same time the longest month for those caught in winter. On the sports calendar it is the time between, when the Super Bowl is over and we await the NCAA Road to Wherever to be followed by the NBA and NHL playoffs. Nothing much is happening.

Dennis Rodman, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Once upon a time he was the scourge of the NBA. He skipped practices and road trips; head-butted two players and then a referee; threw a bag of ice at his coach in San Antonio; used profanity in a live post-game interview; and kicked a television cameraman in the groin at a game in the Target Center. All of this earned him 24 games in suspensions, a suspension from one playoff series, and one indefinite suspension, $67,000 in fines, and millions in lost wages.

Super Bowl Excesses, Richard C. Crepeau

There is always one little item that catches the eye; the one that both embodies and summarizes the excess. This year for me it is the Little Penny Commercial. Here in Fantasyland they have been touting the making of this little obscenity of American excess for the past several weeks. Celebrities have been rolling in and out of town, in and out of their limos and private jets, to be seen in this year's breathlessly awaited Super Bowl commercial. The parties have been numerous, the celebrity watching prime, and the press coverage worthy of the outbreak of World War III.

Coaching And The Abuse Of Authority, Richard C. Crepeau

The breakdown of authority is often cited as a primary cause of the disorders and maladies of society. The loss of respect for authority is seen as a major problem among the young. Many of the symbols of authority have lost their luster and seem no longer capable of evoking deference.

If the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars meet in Super Bowl XXXI Pete Rozelle will come back to present the trophy. James Tobin was born in Champaign, Illinois, in 1918. He received his bachelor's degree in 1939 and his master's degree in 1940, both from Harvard. Following naval service during the years 1942-6, he returned to his graduate studies and received his PhD from Harvard in 1947. In 1950, he joined the economics department at Yale University, and he has largely remained at Yale and has been identified with this institution throughout his career. He twice directed the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics, first from 1955 to 1961, and then from 1964 to 1965. He also served for two years, …
