The Effects Of Individual, Contextual, And Moral Intensity Factors On Environmental Ethical Decision Making, Brenda L. Flannery

Management and Entrepreneurship Department Publications

Most extant studies of organizational ethical decision making have been remiss in doing one or more of the following: (a) building theoretical foundations; (b) encompassing the individual, contextual, and issue-specific determinants impacting ethical judgments; (c) offering testable hypotheses; and/or (d) establishing methodological rigor. This study confronted those challenges aiming to understand the decision intentions of top managers in the metal finishing industry concerning the treatment of hazardous wastewater. This study employed an extended version of Ajzen's (1988) theory of planned behavior. The theory accommodatingly modeled the individual (i.e., attitudes, self-efficacy, personal moral obligation), contextual (subjective norms, organizational climate, and financial …

Title Ix, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1997

Title Ix, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

How many more times will the courts need to rule before university athletic administrators and presidents finally understand that Title IX really does mean that men's and women's sport must be dealt with on an equal basis? This, in effect, is what has been said for the fifth time by the courts, when The Supreme Court this week refused to hear the appeal by Brown University of a lower court ruling of last November.

Fantasy Baseball: A Distortion Of The Game, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1997

Fantasy Baseball: A Distortion Of The Game, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I have a confession to make. I vowed I would never do it. It was just too twisted, too much of a perversion of a sacred American institution. But I did it, and I have been doing it for several years.

Tiger Woods, Richard C. Crepeau

The young man was born in New Mexico, became a baseball pitcher with a supernatural pitch, and was of multi-racial origin. As he developed his athletic skills he quickly achieved perfection, which vaulted him into the public limelight and super stardom. Shortly the public tired of his perfection, being bored by it. He was cynically manipulated by greedy sports owners and ultimately the public turned on him.

Michigan State Government Employment Sector: Are We In Line With The National Trends?, Thomas Walter Cronkright Ii Apr 1997

Michigan State Government Employment Sector: Are We In Line With The National Trends?, Thomas Walter Cronkright Ii

Honors Theses

Examines the national trends of employment to make a comparison for Michigan State government employment. Results show that Michigan's public employment trends do not follow national employment trends in a comparable way. Michigan is distinct from the nation for several reasons: a hiring freeze placed on Michigan State Departments, higher levels of union participation and employee pay, and benefits packages that cost more than the Executive Branch of the U.S. government. Thus, either Michigan provides superior benefits or it pays a premium for those benefits. Suggests further research is needed.

The Impact Of Downsizing On Logistics Performance And Employees In Shipper Firms, Ronald D. Anderson, Roger E. Jerman, Michael R. Crum

Journal of Transportation Management

Firms that downsize hope to achieve improvements in performance and to avoid adverse impacts on employees. This article compares the changes in logistics performance and logistics employee fulfillment for shippers that have downsized with those that have not. Two major conclusions of this research are: (1) Respondent firms that have downsized perceive that they have substantially improved their logistics performance, but no more so than respondent firms that have not downsized; and (2) Stress, morale, and loyalty have worsened for logistics employees in downsized respondent firms, both in an absolute sense and relative to respondent firms that have not downsized.

The Incremental Information Content Of The Cash And Cash Equivalents Definition Of Funds, Hugh Samuel Riner Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to attempt to determine the incremental information content of the cash and cash equivalents definition of funds. The cash and cash equivalents definition of funds is the mandated definition of funds for use in the preparation of a statement of cash flows. Prior to 1988, firms were able to use alternative definitions of funds; working capital was the most widely-used alternative definition.

In order to determine whether the cash and cash equivalents definition of funds has incremental information content, event analysis methodology was utilized to compare the market reaction to the release of financial …

Relationship Marketing In China: Guanxi, Favouritism And Quality Of Business Development, Y H Wong Apr 1997

Relationship Marketing In China: Guanxi, Favouritism And Quality Of Business Development, Y H Wong

IIMB Management Review

Relationship Marketing is increasingly redefining traditional concepts in marketing and guanxi is the new buzz word. Guanxi, meaning relationships, has attracted considerable attention from both academics and practising managers. Viewed positively, guanxi networks offer an attractive way of facilitating business transactions. The flip side is associated with corrupt under-the-table behavior. With China becoming an important market for the world, guanxi could well be one of the tools to understand the byzantine Chinese market.

The Jones Act: It Is Time For Reform, Richard L. Clarke Apr 1997

The Jones Act: It Is Time For Reform, Richard L. Clarke

Journal of Transportation Management

The Jones Act was passed in 1920 as an amendment to the Merchant Marine Act. Its initial purpose was to protect a rail monopoly operating between the state of Washington and the territory of Alaska. It restricted transportation between U.S. ports to U.S. built, owned, registered and crewed vessels. Over the past 77 years it has become very controversial. This paper examines its costs and benefits and concludes that the Jones Act is indeed in need of major reform.

Characteristics Of The Market For International Airfreight In Intermodal Logistics, Forrest E. Harding Apr 1997

Characteristics Of The Market For International Airfreight In Intermodal Logistics, Forrest E. Harding

Journal of Transportation Management

Shipper insights and opinions regarding the characteristics of the market for international airfreight in intermodal logistics were explored in this study. The methodology utilized was focus group research. The findings suggest that shippers’ intermodal airfreight decisions are driven by weight and time sensitivity; that the strength of an organization’s information system, especially in relation to tracking and tracing capabilities, is the most important category of service; that shippers respond very positively to personalized service; and that shipper selection of integrators and/or freight forwarders is destination specific. The research confirms the increasing competitiveness of the intermodal logistics market and suggests that …

The Investment And Marketing Of Transload Facilities: A Statistical Evaluation, Barton Jennings, Mary Collins Holcomb Apr 1997

The Investment And Marketing Of Transload Facilities: A Statistical Evaluation, Barton Jennings, Mary Collins Holcomb

Journal of Transportation Management

This paper examines the basic relationships which shippers, carriers, and facility operators have developed in the design and operation of bulk intermodal facilities, or transload terminals. The analysis is based on 349 truck-served transload facilities throughout the United States. The facilities are examined for commodity types being handled and the types of handling equipment being used. The results demonstrate a strong relationship between certain handling procedures and commodity types. Additionally, the size and volume of the facilities are related by commodity types and the number of rail spots. Finally, the specialization or dedication of a large number of facilities to …
