In recent times, Singapore has, as part of its regionalisation strategy, established industrial parks in various countries, including China, Vietnam, and India. The parks are marketed as a winning combination of the host country’s unique location advantages and Singapore-style efficiency and management know-how. Singapore’s foray into India, in particular, was marked by the setting up of the ITPL in Bangalore; a development that met with great success. This paper contributes to the unresolved issue regarding the effect of economic integration on environmental policymaking. In particular, we discuss the joint impact of trade openness and political stability on environmental policymaking. Our theory predicts that the effect of trade integration on environmental policy is conditional on the degree of political stability. Trade integration affects the stringency of environmental policies due to changes in industry bribery behavior, and the effect is conditional on the degree of political stability. The empirical findings support the theory and are robust to alternative specifications. The stringency enhancing effect on environmental policy of trade integration …

The performance payoff from electronic customer relationship management (eCRM) programs has become a growing concern in marketing and information technology research and practice. Yet despite a number of research reports by both practitioners and academic institutions there remains little evidence of any robust relationship between eCRM investment and performance. Building on a surprisingly sparse literature regarding the importance of managerial discretion, we show that the beliefs held by managers’ matter. Three distinct types of firms populate our data, and the relationship between eCRM performance and its underlying determinants varies greatly between them. An empirical study was conducted to gain understanding about reasons for lecture attendance among undergraduate students. Students were found to be heterogeneous regarding their reported lecture attendance motivations, with two segments representing prototypical extremes. The student group labelled “idealists” reported genuinely enjoying lectures and consisted of more mature aged students with working experience. Students labelled “pragmatics” were most highly represented in the Commerce Faculty, were among the younger students, reported attending lectures to get the information they need to succeed in the subject and demonstrated the lowest lecture attendance while achieving the highest grade point average. Many local environmental volunteering organisations face difficulties attracting volunteers from specific subgroups of the community. Consequently, it is crucial to gain understanding about the variety of factors that move people to participate in environmental volunteering. Factors which might have been underestimated in the past given the rather homogeneous community groups of volunteers which are, e.g., predominantly of Anglo-Saxon origin. This study reports on an analysis of volunteering motivations based on a representative data set provided by the ABS. There have been few studies that investigate the reasons that dissatisfied customers stay with service organisations. Further, there have been no studies that have investigated a range of factors simultaneously in a single model in the business services sector. This paper attempts to address this research gap. A qualitative study was conducted, with 17 personal interviews undertaken with managers who are involved in the choice of service providers. The results not only confirmed factors in the literature: switching costs, impact of alternative service providers, investment in relationships, service recovery and inertia, but also uncovered seven other factors: the service provider …

This paper lays out some of the basics of a language-based, person-centered, or agentic model of practice for nonprofit organizations, voluntary action and philanthropy within the emerging domain of commons theory. Six principles are identified for the practice of commons. Two threats to the production of common goods - bureaucratization and colonization of the life world - are discussed and evaluated as limitations of the practice of commons.

National Macroeconomic conditions are favorable for future expansion of income, employment, and revenue in Nebraska. In particular, the U.S. economy is now in the heart of an expansion expected to persist over the three year forecast period. The principal engine of growth will be a sustained expansion in private sector investment and consumption demand. However, the rate of growth in the national economy likely will be moderate rather than rapid. At least three factors will act to moderate growth. The first is higher energy prices. This paper attempts to understand what drives Japanese venture capital (JVC) fund managers to select either active managerial monitoring or portfolio diversification to manage their firms' investment risks [J. Bus. Venturing 4 (1989) 231]. Unlike U.S. venture capitalists that use active managerial monitoring to gain private information in order to maximize returns [J. Finance 50 (1995) 301], JVCs have traditionally used portfolio diversification to attenuate investment risks [Hamada, Y., 2001. This study analyzed the potential energy resources contained in the biomass residues from the leading crops and livestock in California. As compared with an earlier similar study by Knutson and Miller (1982), where a total of 24 million tons of biomass was reported having an energy value of 336,000 billion Btu’s, this current study showed a total of over 18 million tons (excluding 7.2 million tons of lumber mill and forest slash residues), which translates to almost 13 million tons of dry matter. The energy value of this biomass is 189,000 billion Btu’s, about 56 % of the 1982 value. …

In a series of books and articles, Robert Putnam outlined his famous "bowling alone" theses of declining civic participation, which he attributed in considerable part to television and other alternative leisure time pursuits. Putnam also acknowledged the possibility of other possible factors. This presentation identifies two such possibilities that coincide with the decline Putnam noted, - national security and suburbanization - as well as more recent and more ambiguous, technology-related factors contributing to declines in civic participation.
