Volunteer Voices: Tennessee’S Collaborative Digitization Program, Tiffani Reneau Conner, Ken Middleton, Andy Carter, Melanie Feltner-Reichert

This article provides an overview of Volunteer Voices, Tennessee’s statewide digitization program. The authors focus on the three-year Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant that provided the foundation for future growth of the digitization program. In addition to an overview of the content selection, metadata issues, software selection, digital preservation, and K-12 education emphasis of the grant project, the article includes a detailed description of the work done by the digitization and content specialists from across the state who selected and scanned items. The University of Denver’s Penrose Library implemented a consolidated cataloging and archives processing unit for all materials, taking advantage of the structure, workflow design, and staff resources that were already in place for library-wide materials processing: acquisitions, cataloging, binding, and stacks maintenance. The objective of Penrose Library’s integrated approach was to efficiently create metadata that allow searches based on subject relevance rather than on collection provenance. The library streamlined archives processing by integrating digital content creation and management into the materials processing workflow. The Open Archives Object Reuse and Exchange (OAI-ORE) project defines standards for the description and exchange of aggregations of Web resources. The OAI-ORE abstract data model is conformant with the Architecture of the World Wide Web and leverages concepts from the Semantic Web, including RDF descriptions and Linked Data. In this paper we provide a brief review of a motivating example and its serialization in Atom.

A century from now, will desegregation in Virginia be a forgotten story? If we don’t do a better job of saving our records, it could be. Currently, few records of school desegregation in Virginia are publicly available. While many priceless records of the “massive resistance” to the desegregation of Virginia education reside in the special collections of Virginia’s colleges, universities, and historical societies, the whereabouts of most of Virginia’s crucial records of desegregation are unknown. Commander Melville J. Walters was born in Washington D.C. and joined the Navy in 1943; between 1957 and 1958, during what was known as the International Geophysical Year, Walters was a supply officer at the McMurdo Naval Air Facility in the Antarctica. The McMurdo Sound Naval base, along with other stations like it, was used for Operation Deep Freeze III, a Navy supported research expedition undertaken to gather scientific data about the Antarctic. In his later years, Walters moved to the Tampa Bay Area, Florida; after his death, a group of items collected by Walters, both during his time spent …
