The Archives At The Tip Of Their Fingers: Exploring User Reactions To Large-Scale Digitization, Emily Lapworth, Su Kim Chung
The Archives At The Tip Of Their Fingers: Exploring User Reactions To Large-Scale Digitization, Emily Lapworth, Su Kim Chung
Library Faculty Publications
Advances in digital image capture technology and the adoption of More Product, Less Process methods have resulted in special collections and archives large- scale digitization that creates a new kind of digital surrogate. Mirroring and reusing aggregate archival arrangement and description, these digital surrogates represent multiple items and are minimally described as a whole. The authors conducted interviews to explore user reactions to this digitization method at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This study found that large-scale digitization does have a positive impact for users, although additional strategies may be required to maximize the usefulness of the resulting digital …
From Responsible Custody To Responsible Stewardship, Michelle Light
From Responsible Custody To Responsible Stewardship, Michelle Light
Library Faculty Publications
Light analyzes "responsible custody," one of eleven core values of archivists as described by the Society of American Archivists. After reviewing professional literature about postcustodial debates in the electronic records environment, advocacy for cultural sensitivity in native or colonial archives, and new models for stewardship associated with the community archives movement, Light proposes to revise this core value as "responsible stewardship."

The Digital Librarian: The Liaison Between Digital Collections And Digital Preservation, Marina Georgieva
Library Faculty Presentations
Poster session following the lightning talk at 2018 NDSA Forum Opening
Plenary about the role of the digital librarian and how it relates to digital
preservation.
It’s common misconception digital librarians are involved only in
digitizing historic materials. In fact managing digital projects is only
their visible role. Once it’s over, librarians embrace their new role of
information architects directly engaged in the digital preservation process
of archiving master files. The digital librarian is that unit in the prep
process for digital preservation that ensures meticulously organized archival
directories, easy navigation and smooth file retrieval. Part of session:

Developing Scan-And-Return Collecting At Unlv Libraries, Emily Lapworth
Library Faculty Presentations
This presentation discusses how UNLV is providing access to primary
sources that would otherwise remain in the hands of private individuals.
Through their innovative “scan and return” process, UNLV is borrowing
important historical documents, digitizing them, and then returning the
originals to the owners. The digital surrogates become available through
UNLV’s Digital Collections.

Practical Guidance For Integrating Data Management Into Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Projects, Robert D. Sutter, Susan Wainscott, John R. Boetsch, Craig Palmer, David J. Rugg
Library Faculty Publications
Long-term monitoring and research projects are essential to understand ecological change and the effectiveness of management activities. An inherent characteristic of long-term projects is the need for consistent data collection over time, requiring rigorous attention to data management and quality assurance. Recent papers have provided broad recommendations for data management; however, practitioners need more detailed guidance and examples. We present general yet detailed guidance for the development of comprehensive, concise, and effective data management for monitoring projects. The guidance is presented as a graded approach, matching the scale of data management to the needs of the organization and the complexity …

Work Smarter, Not Harder, Amy Jo Hunsaker

Academic institutions’ digital collections often face the challenging issue of not having enough professionals to create metadata for the thousands of digital objects that exist in their collections. Anybody can scan, but not everyone is cut out for metadata creation. However, universities abound with intellectual and energetic pre-professionals, a.k.a. students. Instead of assigning student workers and volunteers to perform purely menial tasks, why not tap into their ability to learn and train them to do more “professional” jobs, such as metadata creation and website maintenance? With an entire campus filled with students eager to gain experience and willing to study, …
Managing Risk With A Virtual Reading Room: Two Born Digital Projects, Michelle Light
Managing Risk With A Virtual Reading Room: Two Born Digital Projects, Michelle Light
Library Faculty Publications
In March 2010, the University of California, Irvine, launched a site to provide online access to papers of Richard Rorty in the form of a virtual reading room.1 Although we didn’t know it then, we quickly learned that we were one of the first academic repositories in the United States to risk providing remote, online access to born-digital manuscripts. The virtual reading room mitigated the risks involved in providing this kind of access to personal, archival materials with privacy and copyright issues by limiting the number of qualified users and by limiting the discoverability of full-text content on the …

How To Deal With Published Maps In Your Collection, Katherine Rankin
Library Faculty Presentations
This program is aimed at archivists and other special collections staff who have published maps as opposed to manuscript maps as part of their collections but do not have much expertise in map librarianship. The program includes information on kinds of maps, the basic parts of a map including those found mainly on pre-19th century maps, how to store and preserve maps, why they should be cataloged, how cataloging rare maps differs from cataloging current maps, why maps should be classified with a standard classification system, how Library of Congress call numbers can be used to locate certain kinds of …

The University Archives has become an integral part of an academic institution. It has met its role as the repository for the rich history of an institution. They have met the challenges of a changing environment at many points in their history. The most recent change being the addition of born-digital materials into their collections. However, there is an opportunity to collaborate with another unit within academic libraries. The introduction and growth of institutional repositories (IR) on college campuses has provided an opportunity for university archives. An IR’s goal is to preserve the intellectual output of an institution. This is …

Collaborative Organizational Infrastructures To Support Open Access Journals, Marianne A. Buehler
Library Faculty Presentations
With the advancement of open access (OA) journal publishing opportunities in partnership with presses and faculty, libraries in alignment with intersecting academic values are fulfilling a need by supporting sustainable models of scholarly communication that incorporate disseminating faculty scholarship in collaboration with library and/or press staff and editors to “start up” an OA journal or transform an existing print journal to OA. Library staff that embrace faculty or student publishing partnerships are structuring and utilizing their scholarly communication skill sets by positioning the availability of open access publications to disseminate quality research results. University presses are also forging alliances with …

Utilizing Ir Content Discovery Streams, Marianne A. Buehler
Library Faculty Presentations
Institutional repositories (IRs) host an abundance of unique and valued digital content. The premise of garnering scholarly and local collection materials is to engage them for visibility and accessibility. As an additional tool to assist in the process of creating an infrastructure for reachable content, the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway tool enables academic libraries to target individual repository collections to minimally harvest the metadata and be visible through WorldCat.org and OAIster. Collection items display their metadata while available full-text deposits from the Gateway create links to expose an IR’s record and the object itself that could include an article or …

Promoting awareness of the University Archives has evolved for me for the past six years as University Archivist. It started out as an idea that quickly grew into a wonderful relationship between the University Archives and the rest of UNLV. I originally promoted awareness through outreach services as a librarian in Oro Valley, Arizona. It was a nice way for the organization to get the word out about the new library in the neighborhood. I started by reading novels to kids in Summer Camps at the nearby middle and high schools. It was a lot of fun and I was …

Working Together: Journal Of Western Archives & Western Roundups, Tom D. Sommer
Library Faculty Presentations
The idea of a Journal of Western Archives began in the early 2000s after plans were being made for a super regional meeting in Las Vegas, NV. It was during this collaborative time that University Archivists Gordon Daines proposed an idea to then Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists President John Murphy. Gordon wanted to establish a journal that would be for archivists working in the western United States. He noticed that as a researcher himself at BYU that archivists in the western United States didn’t publish as much as archivists in the eastern United States.
In 2002, Gordon approached CIMA about …
