Making Your Mobile Device An Art Expert: Using Qr Codes To Tell The Story Behind Artifacts In Your Library, Jessica Howard, Carolyn Sautter
Jessica Howard
Have you ever wondered about the stories behind the public art in your library? Every object has the potential to tell a story—the paintings, the sculpture, the furniture, and the building itself. At Musselman Library, Gettysburg College, we use QR codes as the technical means to satisfy the natural curiosity of our patrons. Historical information already available in our Special Collections and College Archives was repurposed for the mobile-friendly environment. The artiFACTS project proved to be simple, scalable, and a great opportunity for collaboration. This article will discuss how we implemented artiFACTS, including creating QR codes, marketing to campus constituencies …

Change is a fundamental feature of life and living; without it, few things would survive, and fewer, if any, would thrive. The New England Journal of Public Policy has undergone a change, having elected to assume an electronic form. Since coming into being in this form three months ago, the success it has realized with its earlier issues has been remarkable. It is as if it were being waited on. In the month of December 2012, for example, the journal was the second most popular publication series on ScholarWorks at the University of Massachusetts Boston, with a total of 2,783 …

Creating Ebooks From Archival Material In A Digital Commons Space, Brendan Ryan
Brendan Ryan
The Digital Initiatives at Rhode Island College (RIC) began a project in the spring of 2013 to begin creating eBook files from content already collected as PDF files in the RIC Digital Commons. The process of investigating strategies and exploring file formats provided a background in digital publishing that should prove valuable in future endeavors. In addition, a new method for streamlining workflow was developed that will increase effectiveness. This article explores the process and explores the outcomes of the conversion process.

Preserving Artifacts: A Survey And Research Into The Struggle Of Smaller Institutions' Need For Budgeting, Emily Busch
Museum Studies Theses
This paper will discuss the budgeting and preservation problems that are prevalent in institutions specializing in historical collections. The sizes of the institutions that will be reviewed include small and medium-sized specialized museums along with local and regional historical societies, based on research and a survey sent to these kinds of institutions. Three types of artifacts that are commonly found in these institutions – paper, photographs, and textiles- will be examined to get a clear understanding of their preservation problems and needs. This is followed by reviews of proper storage techniques for artifacts and descriptions where the institutions can acquire …
The Footprint And The Stepping Foot: Archival Records, Evidence, And Time, Kimberly D. Anderson
The Footprint And The Stepping Foot: Archival Records, Evidence, And Time, Kimberly D. Anderson
Kimberly D. Anderson
This paper provides an analysis of the archival concepts of “record” and “evidence” as socio-cultural constructs arising out of a particular view of time. Archival records are usually characterized as having certain relationships to evidence in its temporal aspects—specifically, the requirement for a temporal disconnect between creation and use. This disconnect also necessitates a break between knowledge and the knower in which the record must be externalized and set aside from its creator in order to have “recordness”. This paper explores how Western concepts of time impact concepts of records and archival evidences and proposes an alternative framing. Since records …

The Importance Of Digitization In Teaching-Oriented University And College Libraries, Craighton T. Hippenhammer
Faculty Scholarship – Library Science
An increasing number of university and college libraries have started digitization programs and there are good reasons why they are doing so. First, we are in the middle of revolutionary change as to how ideas get published and distributed. Over 50 percent of scholarly publishing has gone digital and over 20 percent has gone open access. Governments worldwide are beginning to require tax-supported research be published in open access venues. Secondly, it is imperative that they increase their Archives’ digital presence. Preserving institutional histories is currently being lost because of the entirely digital way academics now communicate and many archives …
Native American Empowerment Through Digital Repatriation, Michelle L. Fitch
Native American Empowerment Through Digital Repatriation, Michelle L. Fitch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Following the Enlightenment, Western adherence to positivist theory influenced practices of Western research and documentation. Prior to the introduction of positivism into Western scholarship, innovations in printing technology, literary advancements, and the development of capitalism encouraged the passing of copyright statutes by nation-states in fifteenth century Europe. The evolution of copyright and positivism in Europe influenced United States copyright and its protection of the author, as well as the practice of archiving and its role in interpreting history. Because Native American cultures practiced orality, they suffered the loss of their traditional knowledge and cultural expressions not protected by copyright. By …
