Teaching Digital History Through The University Archives: The Case Of Nebraska U: A Collaborative History, Peterson Brink, Mary Ellen Ducey, Andrew Jewell, Douglas Seefeldt
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Nebraska U: A Collaborative History (http://unlhistory.unl.edu) is a collaboration between faculty and staff in Archives and Special Collections (Brink, Ducey, and Jewell) and the department of History (Seefeldt). This project engages undergraduates in archival research, historical synthesis, and digital project creation.
Nebraska U uses digital technology to provide a research framework for students exploring the way the study of history is transformed using new media publication forms. Specifically, students in Dr. Seefeldt's "Digital History" course selected a topic from the history of the University; worked with Archives staff to locate materials and thoroughly research that topic; selected items …

Canadian Academic Library Support For International Faculty: Library Experience And Information Needs Of Chinese Visiting Scholars At The University Of Western Ontario, Shiyi Xie
Western Libraries Publications
International faculty constitute a relatively small proportion of the library user community in Canadian post-secondary institutions, but they are underserved when compared to other user groups on campus, particularly international students. The author obtained first hand information about Chinese visiting scholars at the University of Western Ontario, and in this paper she presents conclusions from her experience regarding the visiting scholars' use of libraries as well as some recommendations for serving international faculty. The author suggests that academic libraries carefully consider international faculty when planning relevant services for diverse user groups. Managing Processing Staff: Hiring, Training And Retaining, Pam Hackbart-Dean

Chuck Tanner, left fielder and manager in Major League Baseball, noted “There are three secrets to managing. The first secret is have patience. The second is be patient. And the third most important secret is patience.” Effectively managing processing staff in an archives or special collections permits supervisors to marshal the strengths of staff to accomplish processing goals. Successful processing programs facilitate the hiring, development, and retention of top-notch staff. Henry Mintzberg, Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies at McGill University, states simply, “Management is, above all, a practice where art, science, and craft meet."
Case Files: A Congressional Archivist's Dilemma, Cary G. Osborne
Case Files: A Congressional Archivist's Dilemma, Cary G. Osborne
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
One of the more difficult decisions for congressional archivists is deciding what to do with case files. It might help to first understand what importance casework held in the congressperson’s career, particularly as it influenced chances of re-election. A review of the literature shows that there is little agreement among experts in this regard. In congressional archives there is also little agreement on whether the files should be retained. This paper looks at the advantages and disadvantages in using various methodologies in processing these files in an effort to clarify criteria for making that decision.
