Metadata And Lasting Collaborative Success, Felicia J. Williamson Jan 2013

Metadata And Lasting Collaborative Success, Felicia J. Williamson

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Libraries, archives and museums (LAMs) have been creating metadata of various types (catalog records, archival finding aids, museum inventories, etc.) in one form or the other since their foundation. They have also been struggling as historically unique organizations with the best way to capture and manage metadata so that it can be used to organize their collections and provide increased access to users. In recent years, there has been a push to apply metadata standards to enable greater information sharing between LAMs – especially those with a common research or regional focus – and create online exhibits that reach new …

Persuasion, Promotion, Perception: Untangling Archivists' Understanding Of Advocacy And Outreach, Jeremy Brett, Jasmine Jones Jan 2013

Persuasion, Promotion, Perception: Untangling Archivists' Understanding Of Advocacy And Outreach, Jeremy Brett, Jasmine Jones

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

More and more, archivists find themselves having to be advocates for their own institutions, fellow archival institutions, and themselves. This is an especially complicated turn of events because of discrepancy among archivists as to what specifically constitutes archival advocacy. Over the past year, as a response to this, the Issues & Advocacy Roundtable of the Society of American Archivists has been conducting surveys on archival advocacy in the profession, designed to gauge the advocacy environment as it exists among today’s archivists and archival institutions. The ongoing goal of the project has been to create a dialogue about what advocacy is, …

Motivations For Disaffiliation From The Two-By-Two Sect, Julene L. Jones Jan 2013

Motivations For Disaffiliation From The Two-By-Two Sect, Julene L. Jones

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Disaffiliates from encapsulating sects may have many motivations for their disaffiliation. Multiple typologies exist which shed light on an individual’s motivations for disaffiliation from religious groups in general, and on motivations for disaffiliation from particular sects, though no exploration has been made of disaffiliates of the highly tense, fundamentalist Christian Two-by-Two sect. This thesis describes results from a survey of former members of the sect which points to motivations regarding the implausibility of doctrine as being the strongest motivations for these disaffiliates.

Collaboration For A 21st Century Archives: Connecting University Archives With The Library’S Information Technology Professionals, Erin Lawrimore

Collaborative Librarianship

As communication technologies change, so do the records being produced and acquired by the archival repositories tasked with documenting society. This article, written from the perspective of a University Archivist, discusses the need for collaboration between archivists and information technology professionals in a university library in order to manage the university’s born-digital archival records. Using specific examples of collaborative projects of University Archives and the Electronic Resources and Information Technology (ERIT) department in the University Libraries of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the article makes specific recommendations for overcoming challenges related to professional jargon and work practices shared …

An Archive, Public Participation And A Performance: Five Perspectives, Laura Browder, Patricia Herrera

English Faculty Publications

This essay discusses our work on the digital archive, The Fight for Knowledge: Civil Rights and Education in Richmond, Virginia, which grew out of our five-year documentary theater project at the University of Richmond. We include the voices of six collaborators—students, a special collections librarian, a digital archivist, and faculty members—to closely examine the multiple archives that have grown out of this project, and the way this has led us to propose a new way of thinking both about archives and about our documentary theater methodologies. This collaborative process has helped us to reconceptualize the relationship between archive and …
