It is natural to wonder if this might reduce researchers' reliance on library subscriptions for access. To do so, we need to determine not just what papers researchers are citing to that are free today, but to estimate if the papers they were citing were freely available at the time they were citing it. We …

Advances In Research Using The C-Span Archives, Robert X. Browning
Purdue University Press Books
This book is a guide to the latest research using the C-SPAN Archives. In this book, nine authors present original work using the video archives to study presidential debates, public opinion and Congress, analysis of the Violence Against Women Act and the Great Lakes freshwater legislation, as well as President Clinton’s grand jury testimony. The C-SPAN Archives contain over 220,000 hours of first run digital video of the nation’s public affairs record. These and other essays serve as guides for scholars who want to explore the research potential of this robust public policy and communications resource.

This session will share case studies on the implementation of data gathering from the ground up, metrics and assessment in instruction and reference, and identifying the best and most efficient ways to quantify resources for assessment and decision making. The session will also address the transition from manual data gathering to tools like Aeon and LibInsight and the administrative outcomes …

Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs
The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR) provides infrastructure and guidance for the sharing and reuse of digital data used in qualitative and multi-method social inquiry. In this paper we describe some of the repository’s early experiences providing services developed specifically for the curation of qualitative research data. We focus on QDR’s efforts to address two key challenges for qualitative data sharing. The first challenge concerns constraints on data sharing in order to protect human participants and their identities and to comply with copyright laws. The second set of challenges addresses the unique characteristics of qualitative data and their relationship to the …

Portrait Of A Collector: Reflections On An Influential Bibliophile, Meg Miner
Scholarly Publications
The purpose of this essay is to bring together disparate information on Myers’ book collecting habits. President Myers used both the objects of his collecting and the intellectual ideas they represent in the course of his presidential responsibilities. This work offers an overview solely of this aspect of Myers’ activities, in both written records and oral histories, and is not an attempt to analyze the entire arc of Myers’ tenure. The following contains an overview of this project, a summary of collectors’ characteristics, generally, and an exploration of the specific type of collector Myers was based both on documentary evidence …
