American Attitudes Toward And Knowledge Of Animals: An Update, Stephen R. Kellert

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

The distribution of a typology of basic attitudes toward animals in the American population is explored through personal interviews with 3,107 randomly selected persons in the 48 contiguous states and Alaska. Data is presented on the prevalence of these attitudes in the overall American population and among major social demographic and animal activity groups. In addition, results are presented on American knowledge of animals as well as their species preferences. Finally, information is presented on perceptions of critical wildlife issues including endangered species, predator control, hunting, trapping, marine mammals and wildlife habitat protection.

The research problem that the thesis is concerned with is the definition of the components of the "attractiveness" of a regional shopping center as they pertain to the decision-making process of the consumer. In addition, variations among the shopping patterns of male and female shoppers and among income groups are examined.

The following report prepared by Mr. Steven M. Kotter presents the results of archeological assessments conducted at site 41ZP73 in the Falcon Lake State Recreation Area, Zapata County, Texas. This work was sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as part of the preliminary studies leading to planned developments within the Recreation Area.

Site 41ZP73 was found to contain significant prehistoric archeological deposits which date to both the Late Archaic and the Late Prehistoric periods. On June 9, 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, investigated a reported discovery of human bones where construction is underway at the Victoria Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, Victoria, Texas.

The Center was informed of the discovery by David Welsh of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, who requested that an investigation be made by qualified persons to assess the bone material and immediate surrounding for the purpose of determining the potential importance of the cultural resource.

In May 1980, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an archaeological survey of the proposed route of an eight-inch pipeline to be installed by the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. The pipeline will extend from the Scurlock Oil Company tank farm about one kilometer southwest of Sabine Pass to a landfall on the Gulf Coast at a point about six kilometers west of Texas Point (Fig. 1).

During September 1980, archaeological sites 41TG114, 41TG115, and 41TG116 were tested for prehistoric cultural debris to determine their size, depth, cultural affiliations, and archaeological significance. Testing was conducted by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation under the Procedures for the Protection of Cultural and Historic Properties (36 C.F.R., Part 800).

Testing results indicate that these sites contain very little cultural debris or intact stratigraphic deposits. Sites 41TG114 and 41TG116 appear to represent very minor surface campsites. In March 1977, excavations were conducted in front of Alamo Shrine where flagstone paving was being replaced by the City of San Antonio. The subsurface investigations sampled and described the soil stratigraphy which has accumulated through 2.5 centuries of occupation. The distinctive soil levels contained datable cultural materials which relate to some of the major events which took place from the earliest settlement of Mission San Antonio de Valero through subsequent periods of Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-Texan occupations. Following negotiation of a contract (dated 2 Jul 80) between the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan History Division, Michigan Department of State, and Western Michigan University, authorizing archaeological investigation of the M-66 right-of-way between the Villages of Six Lakes and Remus, Michigan, a team of archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology undertook both on-site examination of the project area and a thorough literature/ documents search in order to determine whether road improvement activities would adversely impact significant cultural resources. The White Walnut Creek research area consists of approximately 1437 ha in eight sections of T5S, R2W, Perry County, Illinois. Physiographically speaking, the study area lies within the southern portion of the till plains region known as the Mt. Vernon Hill Country and is characterized by mature topography as reflected in gentl~ rolling hills and broad alluvial valleys. Floristically, this drainage is part of the Oak-Hickory Forest Region of the Western Mesophytic Forest as defined by Braun (1950).

The 1979 Settlement Pattern Survey (SPS 79) in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded a total of 74 prehistoric sites which revealed 10 identifiable components. The majority of sites were small lithic scatters which did not yield culturally diagnostic artifacts. In general the results of this field season conformed with expectations based upon soils, landform and drainage patterns in the survey universe. This report describes and evaluates the significance of the archaeologi ca 1 data recovered.

In recent years, Congress has passed a number of laws that direct various government agencies to safeguard animal welfare. Our own agency has been involved principally in enforcing the Animal Welfare Act and the Horse Protection Act, and therefore we will limit this discussion to these two laws.

The Animal Welfare Act was passed in 1966 and amended in 1970 and 1976. The Act uses a system of licensing and registration to regulate a number of nonfarm businesses and organizations. The study deals with attitudes and views of 456 Israeli students in grades 7, 9, and 11 regarding the use of living animals in research and biology instruction. It was found that most students are interested in studying Jive animals through direct observation and experiment and feel that this kind of learning is superior to learning from secondary sources. At the same time, however, most students exhibit concern for and affection toward living organisms in general and higher animals, especially pets and "beneficial" animals, in particular.
