"No Tobacco, No Hallelujah" , Terence E. Hays

According to myths and legends told by some peoples of New Guinea, tobacco is an ancient and indigenous plant, having appeared sponotaneously in a variety of ways. In other instances, the plant and the custom of smoking it are said to have been established by local culture heroes, while still other traditions prosaically cite adoptions from neighboring groups. On the basis of oral history alone, then, one might conclude that New Guinea tobacco appeared in widely scattered locations in the mythic past, and its distribution at the time of European contact is explainable as simple diffusion within the region.

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter

On November 17, the Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History and the Maine Arts Commission sponsored the "Traditional Culture in the Classroom" workshop at the University of Maine, Orono campus. The workshop was attended by elementary and secondary educators from across the state. Sessions addressed the use of folklore and oral history in the classroom, suggestions and techniques for projects, and classroom activities. The afternoon forum provided the opportunity for educators to share their experiences in developing and coordinating folklife and oral history projects. Organization Of Technology And Lithic Analysis: Prehistoric Occupation Of The Hayes Site (40ml139), Philip J. Carr

The Hayes Site (40ML139) is located in the central Duck River Basin of Middle Tennessee. Excavations at the site revealed Middle Archaic, late Middle Archaic, and Late Archaic components. An examination of the lithic assemblage from the Hayes Site aids in assessing and building models of hunter-gatherer organization for the central Duck River Basin. An organizational perspective on technology, results from published flintknapping experiments, and a lithic resource survey provide the means of constructing and employing an interpretive framework for understanding prehistoric occupation of the Hayes Site. This study in folk medicine focuses on a modern magico-religious folk healer named Jack Epperson, who utilizes the principles of bioenergetics or placing hands on an ill person's body and directing healing energy into blocked channels to heal, in the context of the small Alaskan community in which he lives and practices. The thesis is divided into seven chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion.

A Study Of The Correlation Between Alcoholism And Fingerprint Patterns, Miyo Yokota

The study of 51 white male alcoholics and 50 white male nonalcoholics between the ages of 15 and 40 was undertaken to learn whether there are differences in the fingerprint patterns between the two groups. Previous research demonstrated that fingerprint patterns are genetically determined and influenced by the intrauterine environment. Fingerprint patterns, ridge counts, pattern intensity index, pattern type symmetry and ridge counts on whorls were studied. Both groups were compared by means of the Z statistics and chi-square tests. It was hoped that the differences observed in the fingerprint patterns of the two groups could be used as a …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In order to fulfill its obligations in conjunction with the proposed Jnsticeburg Reservoir project, the City of Lubbock, Texas, is considering the purchase of 2,240 acres in Garza County to serve as wildlife mitigation lands. Prior to the City's final decision to acquire the land, an archeological survey was conducted. The ca. 1,000 acres of incised canyonland and upland margin and ca. 215 acres of selected upland rises were intensively surveyed, while the remaining 1,025 acres of upland flat and low-lying areas were spot checked. Subsurface geomorphic investigations (i.e., backhoe trenching) of the uplands were also conducted. The survey resulted …

Review Of The Archaeology Of Regions: A Case For Full-Coverage Survey By Suzanne K. Fish And Stephen A. Kowalewski, Eds., Luann Wandsnider

The goal of this volume is “to expand the explicit rationale for [full-coverage survey], to affirm it as a practicable technique, and to illustrate its superiority as a basis for archaeological inference” (p. 2). Full-coverage survey (FCS) involves “the systematic examination of contiguous blocks of terrain at a uniform level of intensity” (p. 2), but stipulates no minimum areal extent and no special intensity of coverage. This volume argues that justification for expending limited resources on FCS lies in its potential to capture settlement patterns, which somehow reflect settlement systems and which cannot be approached by sample survey.

Recent archaeological research in the New World has focused on slave dwellings and post-emacipation communities, providing a great deal of insight into slave life and the emergence of African-American culture. In contrast, the material record in West Africa has supplied little new information on the slave trade. Numerous European forts and barracoons serve as pervasive reminders of its existence. However, excavation of these sites is only likely to attest to the meagre possessions of the slaves and their treatment prior to the middle passage, offering little insight into their cultural and ethnic origins. Fisher of University of Michigan's Museum of Paleontology and Department of Geological Sciences has found intriguing new information at the Heisler and other sites concerning Paleoindian food-caching behavior. New lines of evidence suggest Paleoindian peoples stored meat from proboscideans by anchoring under water in ponds.

This study has focused on the alterations of bone when processed in aqueous solution. The author finds the process of immersing bone in aqueous as an unacceptable manner to process osseous materials. When bone is processed by insects, within a sheltered environment, the loss of inorganic material is almost non-existent. This study has shown that the use of water in almost every case, has caused an alteration in the baseline of the Bone Mineral Content.

Zara Neale Purston has re-emerged as an author of promise due to the re-appraisal of her works led by Alice Walker and Robert Hemenway. In both literary and folklore academic circles, Hurston's work has been reclaimed by African-American female scholars and writers, but still a significant study has yet to be done about her ethnographic contributions to folklore and her farsightedness in fieldwork methodology. This thesis seeks to validate her work as a folklorist, thereby dismissing the charges of popularization and amateurishness by re-examining her work.
