Income Inequality Measures And Statistical Properties Of Weighted Burr-Type And Related Distributions, Meznah R. Al Buqami Jan 2013

Income Inequality Measures And Statistical Properties Of Weighted Burr-Type And Related Distributions, Meznah R. Al Buqami

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, tail conditional expectation (TCE) in risk analysis, an important measure for right-tail risk, is presented. This value is generally based on the quantile of the loss distribution. Explicit formulas of several tail conditional expectations and inequality measures for Dagum-type models are derived. In addition, a new class of weighted Burr-III (WBIII) distribution is presented. The statistical properties of this distribution including hazard and reverse hazard functions, moments, coefficient of variation, skewness, and kurtosis, inequality measures, entropy are derived. Also, Fisher information and maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters are obtained.

Evaluation Of The Survival Effect For Various Treatment Modalities Among Stage Ii And Iii Rectal Cancer Patients In California, 1994-2009, Myung Mi Cho Dec 2012

Evaluation Of The Survival Effect For Various Treatment Modalities Among Stage Ii And Iii Rectal Cancer Patients In California, 1994-2009, Myung Mi Cho

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: European trials evaluating the effect of preoperative (PreOP) versus postoperative chemoradiotherapy (PostOP CRT) found no survival benefit. However, the effect of a change from PostOP to PreOP CRT has not been evaluated in a population-based setting. We sought to evaluate multimodal treatment changes and overall survival for perioperative (PeriOP) CRT versus surgery alone and for PreOP versus PostOP CRT from 1994 through 2009 among patients receiving radical surgery for stage II and III rectal cancer (RC).

Patients and Methods: We conducted a nonconcurrent cohort study evaluating demographic predictors of multimodal therapy for stage II and III RC using …

An Analysis Of Risk Reduction Choices In Dcis Breast Cancer Patients, Lauren Soltesz Dec 2012

An Analysis Of Risk Reduction Choices In Dcis Breast Cancer Patients, Lauren Soltesz

Statistics

The main focus of this paper was to evaluate possible demographic and clinical characteristics associated with a woman’s choice of breast conserving surgery (BCS), unilateral mastectomy (ULM), or bilateral risk reduction mastectomy (BRRM). The cohort consisted of patients presenting to the City of Hope National Medical Center with ductal carcinoma in situ breast cancer who elected to have cancer directed surgery (N=305). Analyses to examine associations of patient characteristics with type of surgery were conducted using a multinomial logistic regression. Results showed that older women were more likely to choose breast conserving surgery over bilateral risk reduction mastectomy than younger …

An Analysis Of The Career Length Of Professional Basketball Players, Kwame D. Fynn, Morgan Sonnenschein Aug 2012

An Analysis Of The Career Length Of Professional Basketball Players, Kwame D. Fynn, Morgan Sonnenschein

The Macalester Review

An interesting problem in professional basketball is predicting how long a player remains in the NBA League. Previous research on this problem has focused on factors such as race, performance in games, and size. We propose to analyze career duration in the NBA based on awards won, position played and biological variables such as height. Using Accelerated Failure Time models, Cox Proportional Hazards models and Kaplan-Meier analyses, we determine that both height and number of awards won lengthen career duration; however, only certain player positions significantly affect career length of a player.

Contributions Of Financial Sector Reforms And Credit Supply To Nigerian Agricultural Sector (1978-2009), Anthony O. Onoja, M. E. Onu, S. Ajodo-Ohiemi Dec 2011

Contributions Of Financial Sector Reforms And Credit Supply To Nigerian Agricultural Sector (1978-2009), Anthony O. Onoja, M. E. Onu, S. Ajodo-Ohiemi

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study analyzed the trends and pattern of institutional credit supply to agriculture during pre- and post-financial reforms along with their determinants. It then compared the effects of reform policies on access to institutional credits in Nigerian agricultural sector before and after the reforms (1978 - 1985; and 1986 -2009). Relying mainly on time series data from CBN and NBS, it used ordinary least squares method (linear, semi-log and double log) to model the determinants of banking sector lending to the agricultural sector during the review period. The models were subjected to several econometric tests before accepting one. Chow test …

Determinants Of Foreign Reserves In Nigeria: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach, David Irefin, Baba N. Yaaba Dec 2011

Determinants Of Foreign Reserves In Nigeria: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach, David Irefin, Baba N. Yaaba

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

On global scale, central banks’ holdings of foreign reserves have escalated sharply in recent years. World international reserves holdings have risen significantly from US$1.2 trillion in 1995 to nearly US$10.0 trillion in June 2011. Dominant among these reserves are concentrated in the hands of few countries. Ten major holders of foreign reserves are mostly from Asia. Oil exporting countries in Africa and the Middle East are not left out in this trend. Nigeria’s foreign reserves rose from US$5.5 billion in 1999 to US$62.40 billion in July 2008, making Nigeria the twenty-fourth largest reserves holder in the world. This pace of …

Effects Of Exchange Rate Movements On Economic Growth In Nigeria, Eme O. Akpan, Johnson A. Atan Dec 2011

Effects Of Exchange Rate Movements On Economic Growth In Nigeria, Eme O. Akpan, Johnson A. Atan

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study investigates the effect of exchange rate movements on real output growth in Nigeria. Based on quarterly series for the period 1986 to 2010, the paper examines the possible direct and indirect relationship between exchange rates and GDP growth. The relationship is derived in two ways using a simultaneous equations model within a fully specified (but small) macroeconomic model. A Generalised Method of Moments (GMM) technique was explored. The estimation results suggest that there is no evidence of a strong direct relationship between changes in exchange rate and output growth. Rather, Nigeria’s economic growth has been directly affected by …

Exchange Rate Volatility In Nigeria: Consistency, Persistency & Severity Analyses, Babatunde Adeoye, Akinwande A. Atanda Dec 2011

Exchange Rate Volatility In Nigeria: Consistency, Persistency & Severity Analyses, Babatunde Adeoye, Akinwande A. Atanda

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The adoption of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in 1986 resulted in the transition from fixed exchange rate regime to floating exchange rate regime in Nigeria. Ever since, the exchange rate of naira vis-à-vis the U.S dollar has attained varying rates all through different time horizons. On this basis, this study examines the consistency, persistency, and severity (degree) of volatility in exchange rate of Nigerian currency (naira) vis-a-vis the United State dollar using monthly time series data from 1986 to 2008. The standard Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) model was used to analyze the long-run consistency of …

Foreign Private Investment And Economic Growth In Nigeria: A Cointegrated Var And Granger Causality Analysis, F. Z. Abdullahi, S. Ladan, Haruna R. Bakari Dec 2011

Foreign Private Investment And Economic Growth In Nigeria: A Cointegrated Var And Granger Causality Analysis, F. Z. Abdullahi, S. Ladan, Haruna R. Bakari

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This research uses a cointegration VAR model to study the contemporaneous long-run dynamics of the impact of Foreign Private Investment (FPI), Interest Rate (INR) and Inflation rate (IFR) on Growth Domestic Products (GDP) in Nigeria for the period January 1970 to December 2009. The Unit Root Test suggests that all the variables are integrated of order 1. The VAR model was appropriately identified using AIC information criteria and the VECM model has exactly one cointegration relation. The study further investigates the causal relationship using the Granger causality analysis of VECM which indicates a uni-directional causality relationship between GDP and FDI …

Banking Sector Credit And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Aniekan O. Akpansung, Sikiru J. Babalola Dec 2011

Banking Sector Credit And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Aniekan O. Akpansung, Sikiru J. Babalola

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The paper examines the relationship between banking sector credit and economic growth in Nigeria over the period 1970-2008. The causal links between the pairs of variables of interest were established using Granger causality test while a Two-Stage Least Squares (TSLS) estimation technique was used for the regression models. The results of Granger causality test show evidence of unidirectional causal relationship from GDP to private sector credit (PSC) and from industrial production index (IND) to GDP. Estimated regression models indicate that private sector credit impacts positively on economic growth over the period of coverage in this study. However, lending (interest) rate …

Assessing Association For Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling: A Copula Model Approach With Application To Aids Study, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang Nov 2011

Assessing Association For Bivariate Survival Data With Interval Sampling: A Copula Model Approach With Application To Aids Study, Hong Zhu, Mei-Cheng Wang

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In disease surveillance systems or registries, bivariate survival data are typically collected under interval sampling. It refers to a situation when entry into a registry is at the time of the first failure event (e.g., HIV infection) within a calendar time interval, the time of the initiating event (e.g., birth) is retrospectively identified for all the cases in the registry, and subsequently the second failure event (e.g., death) is observed during the follow-up. Sampling bias is induced due to the selection process that the data are collected conditioning on the first failure event occurs within a time interval. Consequently, the …

Effectively Selecting A Target Population For A Future Comparative Study, Lihui Zhao, Lu Tian, Tianxi Cai, Brian Claggett, L. J. Wei

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

When comparing a new treatment with a control in a randomized clinical study, the treatment effect is generally assessed by evaluating a summary measure over a specific study population. The success of the trial heavily depends on the choice of such a population. In this paper, we show a systematic, effective way to identify a promising population, for which the new treatment is expected to have a desired benefit, using the data from a current study involving similar comparator treatments. Specifically, with the existing data we first create a parametric scoring system using multiple covariates to estimate subject-specific treatment differences. …

Bayesian Phase I Dose Finding In Cancer Trials, Lin Yang Aug 2011

Bayesian Phase I Dose Finding In Cancer Trials, Lin Yang

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

This dissertation explores phase I dose-finding designs in cancer trials from three perspectives: the alternative Bayesian dose-escalation rules, a design based on a time-to-dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) model, and a design based on a discrete-time multi-state (DTMS) model.

We list alternative Bayesian dose-escalation rules and perform a simulation study for the intra-rule and inter-rule comparisons based on two statistical models to identify the most appropriate rule under certain scenarios. We provide evidence that all the Bayesian rules outperform the traditional ``3+3'' design in the allocation of patients and selection of the maximum tolerated dose.

The design based on a time-to-DLT model …

Evaluation Of Flexible Regression For Non-Unimodal Hazard Functions, Marco Fornili, Patrizia Boracchi, Federico Ambrogi, Elia Biganzoli Apr 2011

Evaluation Of Flexible Regression For Non-Unimodal Hazard Functions, Marco Fornili, Patrizia Boracchi, Federico Ambrogi, Elia Biganzoli

COBRA Preprint Series

Longer follow-up for various kinds of cancer, particularly breast cancer, has made it possible the observation of complex forms of the hazard function of occurrence of metastasis and death. In several studies a bimodal hazard function was obtained, with a possible interpretation in the context of tumor dormancy. The shape of the hazard function is usually estimated by spline regression functions. In the case of breast cancer, no general agreement is obtained on the presence of a complex behavior. This may depend on the properties of the smoothing function adopted. We evaluate through simulations of a bimodal hazard function the …

Threshold Regression Models Adapted To Case-Control Studies, And The Risk Of Lung Cancer Due To Occupational Exposure To Asbestos In France, Antoine Chambaz, Dominique Choudat, Catherine Huber, Jean-Claude Pairon, Mark J. Van Der Laan Mar 2011

Threshold Regression Models Adapted To Case-Control Studies, And The Risk Of Lung Cancer Due To Occupational Exposure To Asbestos In France, Antoine Chambaz, Dominique Choudat, Catherine Huber, Jean-Claude Pairon, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Asbestos has been known for many years as a powerful carcinogen. Our purpose is quantify the relationship between an occupational exposure to asbestos and an increase of the risk of lung cancer. Furthermore, we wish to tackle the very delicate question of the evaluation, in subjects suffering from a lung cancer, of how much the amount of exposure to asbestos explains the occurrence of the cancer. For this purpose, we rely on a recent French case-control study. We build a large collection of threshold regression models, data-adaptively select a better model in it by multi-fold likelihood-based cross-validation, then fit the …

How Other Drivers’ Vehicle Characteristics Influence Your Driving Speed, Russell Brockett Jan 2011

How Other Drivers’ Vehicle Characteristics Influence Your Driving Speed, Russell Brockett

CMC Senior Theses

An analysis of the effect of passing vehicles’ characteristics and their impact on other drivers’ velocities was investigated.  Three experimental studies were proposed and likely outcomes were discussed.  Experiment 1 focused on the effect of passing vehicle type (SUV, sedan or truck) on driver speed.  Drivers were hypothesized as going faster when the same vehicle type as they were driving passed them versus when no vehicle or a different vehicle passed them.  Experiment 2 focused on the effect of passing SUV age on driver’s speed.  Evidence suggests passing older SUVs will increase the driver’s speed more than new SUVs.  Experiment …

The estimation of survival endpoints is introduced, …

Survival Prediction For Brain Tumor Patients Using Gene Expression Data, Vinicius Bonato May 2010

Survival Prediction For Brain Tumor Patients Using Gene Expression Data, Vinicius Bonato

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Brain tumor is one of the most aggressive types of cancer in humans, with an estimated median survival time of 12 months and only 4% of the patients surviving more than 5 years after disease diagnosis. Until recently, brain tumor prognosis has been based only on clinical information such as tumor grade and patient age, but there are reports indicating that molecular profiling of gliomas can reveal subgroups of patients with distinct survival rates. We hypothesize that coupling molecular profiling of brain tumors with clinical information might improve predictions of patient survival time and, consequently, better guide future treatment decisions. …

Recovery Of The Baseline Incidence Density In Censored Time-To-Event Analysis, Mikel Aickin Apr 2010

Recovery Of The Baseline Incidence Density In Censored Time-To-Event Analysis, Mikel Aickin

COBRA Preprint Series

Abstract Time-to-event analyses are often concerned with the effects of explanatory factors on the underlying incidence density, but since there is no intrinsic interest in the form of the incidence density itself, a proportional hazards model is used. When part of the purpose of the analysis is to use actual cumulative incidence for simulation, or for providing informative visual displays of the results, an estimate of the baseline incidence density is required. The usual method for estimating the baseline hazards in Cox’s proportional hazards analysis yields values that are of little use, and furthermore no standard deviations of the estimates …

Collaborative Targeted Maximum Likelihood For Time To Event Data, Ori M. Stitelman, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Current methods used to analyze time to event data either, rely on highly parametric assumptions which result in biased estimates of parameters which are purely chosen out of convenience, or are highly unstable because they ignore the global constraints of the true model. By using Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation one may consistently estimate parameters which directly answer the statistical question of interest. Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimators are substitution estimators, which rely on estimating the underlying distribution. However, unlike other substitution estimators, the underlying distribution is estimated specifically to reduce bias in the estimate of the parameter of interest. We will …

Confidence Intervals In Survival Analysis, Tan Shay Kee Jan 2010

Confidence Intervals In Survival Analysis, Tan Shay Kee

Student Works (2010-2019)

In obtaining confidence interval for the survivor function using Greenwood’s formula and in performing log-rank test for comparing the survivor functions of two groups of individuals, only the information given by the first two moments of the relevant statistics are used. Presently we show that by incorporating the information given by the third and fourth moments of the statistics, the performance of the confidence interval and statistical test can be improved. When the survivor function can be described by the Weibull distribution, the knowledge regarding the survivor function can be obtained through the estimation of the Weibull scale and shape …
