Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, Mackenzi Stump
Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, Mackenzi Stump
Honors Projects
The “hot hand” in sports has been debated for as long as sports have been around. The debate involves whether streaks and slumps in sports are true phenomena or just simply perceptions in the mind of the human viewer. This statistical analysis of momentum in basketball analyzes the distribution of time between scoring events for the BGSU Women’s Basketball team from 2011-2017. We discuss how the distribution of time between scoring events changes with normal game factors such as location of the game, game outcome, and several other factors. If scoring events during a game were always randomly distributed, or …
Bayesian Model For Detection Of Outliers In Linear Regression With Application To Longitudinal Data, Zahraa Al-Sharea
Bayesian Model For Detection Of Outliers In Linear Regression With Application To Longitudinal Data, Zahraa Al-Sharea
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Outlier detection is one of the most important challenges with many present-day applications. Outliers can occur due to uncertainty in data generating mechanisms or due to an error in data recording/processing. Outliers can drastically change the study's results and make predictions less reliable. Detecting outliers in longitudinal studies is quite challenging because this kind of study is working with observations that change over time. Therefore, the same subject can produce an outlier at one point in time produce regular observations at all other time points. A Bayesian hierarchical modeling assigns parameters that can quantify whether each observation is an outlier …
Testing The Independence Hypothesis Of Accepted Mutations For Pairs Of Adjacent Amino Acids In Protein Sequences, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz
Testing The Independence Hypothesis Of Accepted Mutations For Pairs Of Adjacent Amino Acids In Protein Sequences, Jyotsna Ramanan, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Evolutionary studies usually assume that the genetic mutations are independent of each other. However, that does not imply that the observed mutations are independent of each other because it is possible that when a nucleotide is mutated, then it may be biologically beneficial if an adjacent nucleotide mutates too. With a number of decoded genes currently available in various genome libraries and online databases, it is now possible to have a large-scale computer-based study to test whether the independence assumption holds for pairs of adjacent amino acids. Hence the independence question also arises for pairs of adjacent amino acids within …

Mechanistic Mathematical Models: An Underused Platform For Hpv Research, Marc Ryser, Patti Gravitt, Evan R. Myers
Global Health Faculty Publications
Health economic modeling has become an invaluable methodology for the design and evaluation of clinical and public health interventions against the human papillomavirus (HPV) and associated diseases. At the same time, relatively little attention has been paid to a different yet complementary class of models, namely that of mechanistic mathematical models. The primary focus of mechanistic mathematical models is to better understand the intricate biologic mechanisms and dynamics of disease. Inspired by a long and successful history of mechanistic modeling in other biomedical fields, we highlight several areas of HPV research where mechanistic models have the potential to advance the …

Comparison Of Survival Curves Between Cox Proportional Hazards, Random Forests, And Conditional Inference Forests In Survival Analysis, Brandon Weathers
Comparison Of Survival Curves Between Cox Proportional Hazards, Random Forests, And Conditional Inference Forests In Survival Analysis, Brandon Weathers
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Survival analysis methods are a mainstay of the biomedical fields but are finding increasing use in other disciplines including finance and engineering. A widely used tool in survival analysis is the Cox proportional hazards regression model. For this model, all the predicted survivor curves have the same basic shape, which may not be a good approximation to reality. In contrast the Random Survival Forests does not make the proportional hazards assumption and has the flexibility to model survivor curves that are of quite different shapes for different groups of subjects. We applied both techniques to a number of publicly available …

ABSTRACT
FURTHER ADVANCES FOR THE SEQUENTIAL MULTIPLE ASSIGNMENT RANDOMIZED TRIAL (SMART)
Tianjiao Dai, M.S.
Advisory Professor: Sanjay Shete, Ph.D.
Sequential multiple assignment randomized trial (SMART) designs have been developed these years for studying adaptive interventions. In my Ph.D. study, I mainly investigate how to further improve SMART designs and optimize the interventions for each individual in the trial. My dissertation has focused on two topics of SMART designs.
1) Developing a novel SMART design that can reduce the cost and side effects associated with the interventions and proposing the corresponding analytic methods. I have developed a time-varying SMART design in …
On The Three Dimensional Interaction Between Flexible Fibers And Fluid Flow, Bogdan Nita, Ryan Allaire
On The Three Dimensional Interaction Between Flexible Fibers And Fluid Flow, Bogdan Nita, Ryan Allaire
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In this paper we discuss the deformation of a flexible fiber clamped to a spherical body and immersed in a flow of fluid moving with a speed ranging between 0 and 50 cm/s by means of three dimensional numerical simulation developed in COMSOL . The effects of flow speed and initial configuration angle of the fiber relative to the flow are analyzed. A rigorous analysis of the numerical procedure is performed and our code is benchmarked against well established cases. The flow velocity and pressure are used to compute drag forces upon the fiber. Of particular interest is the behavior …
Optimized Variable Selection Via Repeated Data Splitting, Marinela Capanu, Colin B. Begg, Mithat Gonen
Optimized Variable Selection Via Repeated Data Splitting, Marinela Capanu, Colin B. Begg, Mithat Gonen
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We introduce a new variable selection procedure that repeatedly splits the data into two sets, one for estimation and one for validation, to obtain an empirically optimized threshold which is then used to screen for variables to include in the final model. Simulation results show that the proposed variable selection technique enjoys superior performance compared to candidate methods, being amongst those with the lowest inclusion of noisy predictors while having the highest power to detect the correct model and being unaffected by correlations among the predictors. We illustrate the methods by applying them to a cohort of patients undergoing hepatectomy …
Bayesian Exponential Random Graph Modelling Of Interhospital Patient Referral Networks, Alberto Caimo, Francesca Pallotti, Alessandro Lomi
Bayesian Exponential Random Graph Modelling Of Interhospital Patient Referral Networks, Alberto Caimo, Francesca Pallotti, Alessandro Lomi
Articles
Using original data that we have collected on referral relations between 110 hospitals serving a large regional community, we show how recently derived Bayesian exponential random graph models may be adopted to illuminate core empirical issues in research on relational coordination among healthcare organisations. We show how a rigorous Bayesian computation approach supports a fully probabilistic analytical framework that alleviates well-known problems in the estimation of model parameters of exponential random graph models. We also show how the main structural features of interhospital patient referral networks that prior studies have described can be reproduced with accuracy by specifying the system …
Nonparametric Compound Estimation, Derivative Estimation, And Change Point Detection, Sisheng Liu
Nonparametric Compound Estimation, Derivative Estimation, And Change Point Detection, Sisheng Liu
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
Firstly, we reviewed some popular nonparameteric regression methods during the past several decades. Then we extended the compound estimation (Charnigo and Srinivasan [2011]) to adapt random design points and heteroskedasticity and proposed a modified Cp criteria for tuning parameter selection. Moreover, we developed a DCp criteria for tuning paramter selection problem in general nonparametric derivative estimation. This extends GCp criteria in Charnigo, Hall and Srinivasan [2011] with random design points and heteroskedasticity. Next, we proposed a change point detection method via compound estimation for both fixed design and random design case, the adaptation of heteroskedasticity was considered for the method. …

Newsvendor Models With Monte Carlo Sampling, Ijeoma W. Ekwegh
Newsvendor Models With Monte Carlo Sampling, Ijeoma W. Ekwegh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Newsvendor Models with Monte Carlo Sampling by Ijeoma Winifred Ekwegh The newsvendor model is used in solving inventory problems in which demand is random. In this thesis, we will focus on a method of using Monte Carlo sampling to estimate the order quantity that will either maximizes revenue or minimizes cost given that demand is uncertain. Given data, the Monte Carlo approach will be used in sampling data over scenarios and also estimating the probability density function. A bootstrapping process yields an empirical distribution for the order quantity that will maximize the expected profit. Finally, this method will be used …

Binomial Regression With A Misclassified Covariate And Outcome, Sheng Luo, Wenyaw Chan, Michelle A Detry, Paul J Massman, R S. Doody
Binomial Regression With A Misclassified Covariate And Outcome, Sheng Luo, Wenyaw Chan, Michelle A Detry, Paul J Massman, R S. Doody
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Misclassification occurring in either outcome variables or categorical covariates or both is a common issue in medical science. It leads to biased results and distorted disease-exposure relationships. Moreover, it is often of clinical interest to obtain the estimates of sensitivity and specificity of some diagnostic methods even when neither gold standard nor prior knowledge about the parameters exists. We present a novel Bayesian approach in binomial regression when both the outcome variable and one binary covariate are subject to misclassification. Extensive simulation results under various scenarios and a real clinical example are given to illustrate the proposed approach. This approach …
Models For Hsv Shedding Must Account For Two Levels Of Overdispersion, Amalia Magaret
Models For Hsv Shedding Must Account For Two Levels Of Overdispersion, Amalia Magaret
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We have frequently implemented crossover studies to evaluate new therapeutic interventions for genital herpes simplex virus infection. The outcome measured to assess the efficacy of interventions on herpes disease severity is the viral shedding rate, defined as the frequency of detection of HSV on the genital skin and mucosa. We performed a simulation study to ascertain whether our standard model, which we have used previously, was appropriately considering all the necessary features of the shedding data to provide correct inference. We simulated shedding data under our standard, validated assumptions and assessed the ability of 5 different models to reproduce the …
Design & Analysis Of A Computer Experiment For An Aerospace Conformance Simulation Study, Ryan W. Gryder
Design & Analysis Of A Computer Experiment For An Aerospace Conformance Simulation Study, Ryan W. Gryder
Theses and Dissertations
Within NASA's Air Traffic Management Technology Demonstration # 1 (ATD-1), Interval Management (IM) is a flight deck tool that enables pilots to achieve or maintain a precise in-trail spacing behind a target aircraft. Previous research has shown that violations of aircraft spacing requirements can occur between an IM aircraft and its surrounding non-IM aircraft when it is following a target on a separate route. This research focused on the experimental design and analysis of a deterministic computer simulation which models our airspace configuration of interest. Using an original space-filling design and Gaussian process modeling, we found that aircraft delay assignments …
Development In Normal Mixture And Mixture Of Experts Modeling, Meng Qi
Development In Normal Mixture And Mixture Of Experts Modeling, Meng Qi
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
In this dissertation, first we consider the problem of testing homogeneity and order in a contaminated normal model, when the data is correlated under some known covariance structure. To address this problem, we developed a moment based homogeneity and order test, and design weights for test statistics to increase power for homogeneity test. We applied our test to microarray about Down’s syndrome. This dissertation also studies a singular Bayesian information criterion (sBIC) for a bivariate hierarchical mixture model with varying weights, and develops a new data dependent information criterion (sFLIC).We apply our model and criteria to birth- weight and gestational …
Improved Models For Differential Analysis For Genomic Data, Hong Wang
Improved Models For Differential Analysis For Genomic Data, Hong Wang
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
This paper intend to develop novel statistical methods to improve genomic data analysis, especially for differential analysis. We considered two different data type: NanoString nCounter data and somatic mutation data. For NanoString nCounter data, we develop a novel differential expression detection method. The method considers a generalized linear model of the negative binomial family to characterize count data and allows for multi-factor design. Data normalization is incorporated in the model framework through data normalization parameters, which are estimated from control genes embedded in the nCounter system. For somatic mutation data, we develop beta-binomial model-based approaches to identify highly or lowly …

Black Cloud Randomization Test, Nicholas S. Vanni
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The Black Cloud Randomization Test looks at a nontraditional question and attempts to answer the question using unique statistics. The purpose of this paper is to apply what has been learned throughout the years and apply this knowledge to a final project. Data for this project follows an emergency room’s on call schedule, as well as the number of traumas that came in during each day shift. The project builds on what has been already learned and helps to open a different way of working with statistics. The project was coded in the R software. With different restrictions, there are …
Dimension Reduction And Variable Selection, Hossein Moradi Rekabdarkolaee
Dimension Reduction And Variable Selection, Hossein Moradi Rekabdarkolaee
Theses and Dissertations
High-dimensional data are becoming increasingly available as data collection technology advances. Over the last decade, significant developments have been taking place in high-dimensional data analysis, driven primarily by a wide range of applications in many fields such as genomics, signal processing, and environmental studies. Statistical techniques such as dimension reduction and variable selection play important roles in high dimensional data analysis. Sufficient dimension reduction provides a way to find the reduced space of the original space without a parametric model. This method has been widely applied in many scientific fields such as genetics, brain imaging analysis, econometrics, environmental sciences, etc. …

Preparedness Of Hospitals In The Republic Of Ireland For An Influenza Pandemic, An Infection Control Perspective, Mary Reidy, Fiona Ryan, Dervla Hogan, Seán Lacey, Claire Buckley
Department of Mathematics Publications
When an influenza pandemic occurs most of the population is susceptible and attack rates can range as high as 40–50 %. The most important failure in pandemic planning is the lack of standards or guidelines regarding what it means to be ‘prepared’. The aim of this study was to assess the preparedness of acute hospitals in the Republic of Ireland for an influenza pandemic from an infection control perspective.

The Effects Of Quantitative Easing In The United States: Implications For Future Central Bank Policy Makers, Matthew Q. Rubino
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects of the Federal Reserve’s recent bond buying programs, specifically Quantitative Easing 1, Quantitative Easing 2, Operation Twist (or the Fed’s Maturity Extension Program), and Quantitative Easing 3. In this study, I provide a picture of the economic landscape leading up to the deployment of the programs, an overview of quantitative easing including each program’s respective objectives, and how and why the Fed decided to implement the programs. Using empirical analysis, I measure each program’s effectiveness by applying four models including a yield curve model, an inflation model, a money supply …
The Effects Of A Planned Missingness Design On Examinee Motivation And Psychometric Quality, Matthew S. Swain
The Effects Of A Planned Missingness Design On Examinee Motivation And Psychometric Quality, Matthew S. Swain
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Assessment practitioners in higher education face increasing demands to collect assessment and accountability data to make important inferences about student learning and institutional quality. The validity of these high-stakes decisions is jeopardized, particularly in low-stakes testing contexts, when examinees do not expend sufficient motivation to perform well on the test. This study introduced planned missingness as a potential solution. In planned missingness designs, data on all items are collected but each examinee only completes a subset of items, thus increasing data collection efficiency, reducing examinee burden, and potentially increasing data quality. The current scientific reasoning test served as the Long …
Examining The Performance Of The Metropolis-Hastings Robbins-Monro Algorithm In The Estimation Of Multilevel Multidimensional Irt Models, Bozhidar M. Bashkov
Examining The Performance Of The Metropolis-Hastings Robbins-Monro Algorithm In The Estimation Of Multilevel Multidimensional Irt Models, Bozhidar M. Bashkov
Dissertations, 2014-2019
The purpose of this study was to review the challenges that exist in the estimation of complex (multidimensional) models applied to complex (multilevel) data and to examine the performance of the recently developed Metropolis-Hastings Robbins-Monro (MH-RM) algorithm (Cai, 2010a, 2010b), designed to overcome these challenges and implemented in both commercial and open-source software programs. Unlike other methods, which either rely on high-dimensional numerical integration or approximation of the entire multidimensional response surface, MH-RM makes use of Fisher’s Identity to employ stochastic imputation (i.e., data augmentation) via the Metropolis-Hastings sampler and then apply the stochastic approximation method of Robbins and Monro …
Do Footprint-Based Cafe Standards Make Car Models Bigger?, Brianna Marie Jean
Do Footprint-Based Cafe Standards Make Car Models Bigger?, Brianna Marie Jean
Economics
Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards have historically been set equal across all manufacturer fleets of the same type. Concerns about varying costs across firms and safety implications of standards that are set homogeneously across firms and models resulted in a policy shift towards footprint-based standards. Under this type of standard, individual car models face targets based on the size of the area between the wheelbase and wheel track, so that larger models face less stringent standards, and manufacturers who make, on average, larger cars will face a lighter fleet standard. Theoretical models have shown that this type of policy …
Relationship Between High School Math Course Selection And Retention Rates At Otterbein University, Lauren A. Fisher
Relationship Between High School Math Course Selection And Retention Rates At Otterbein University, Lauren A. Fisher
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Binary logistic regression was used to study the relationship between high school math course selection and retention rates at Otterbein University. Graduation rates from postsecondary institutions are low in the United States and, more specifically, at Otterbein. This study is important in helping to determine what can raise retention rates, and ultimately, graduation rates. It directs focus toward high school math course selection and what should be changed before entering a post-secondary institution. Otterbein will have a better idea of what type of students to recruit and which students may be good candidates with some extra help. Recruiting is expensive, …

Addressing The Zeros Problem: Regression Models For Outcomes With A Large Proportion Of Zeros, With An Application To Trial Outcomes, Theodore Eisenberg, Thomas Eisenberg, Martin T. Wells, Min Zhang
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
In law‐related and other social science contexts, researchers need to account for data with an excess number of zeros. In addition, dollar damages in legal cases also often are skewed. This article reviews various strategies for dealing with this data type. Tobit models are often applied to deal with the excess number of zeros, but these are more appropriate in cases of true censoring (e.g., when all negative values are recorded as zeros) and less appropriate when zeros are in fact often observed as the amount awarded. Heckman selection models are another methodology that is applied in this setting, yet …

Best Practice Recommendations For Data Screening, Justin A. Desimone, Peter D. Harms, Alice J. Desimone
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Survey respondents differ in their levels of attention and effort when responding to items. There are a number of methods researchers may use to identify respondents who fail to exert sufficient effort in order to increase the rigor of analysis and enhance the trustworthiness of study results. Screening techniques are organized into three general categories, which differ in impact on survey design and potential respondent awareness. Assumptions and considerations regarding appropriate use of screening techniques are discussed along with descriptions of each technique. The utility of each screening technique is a function of survey design and administration. Each technique has …
Comparison Of Hazard, Odds And Risk Ratio In The Two-Sample Survival Problem, Benedict P. Dormitorio
Comparison Of Hazard, Odds And Risk Ratio In The Two-Sample Survival Problem, Benedict P. Dormitorio
Dissertations
Cox proportional hazards is the standard method for analyzing treatment efficacy when time-to-event data is available. In the absence of time-to-event, investigators may use logistic regression which only requires relative frequencies of events, or Poisson regression which requires only interval-summarized frequency tables of time-to-event. When event frequencies are used instead of time-to-events, does it always result in a loss in power?
We investigate the relative performance of the three methods. In particular, we compare the power of tests based on the respective effect-size estimates (1)hazard ratio (HR), (2)odds ratio (OR), and (3)risk ratio (RR). We use a variety of survival …
