Dice Math And Probability, Warren Campbell Jul 2025

Dice Math And Probability, Warren Campbell

The manufacture of dice for tabletop games is a billion-dollar industry. In gaming circles and online forums, the concept of “cursed dice” is a popular topic. Dice are inherently unfair due to the difficulty of manufacturing them with perfect geometric tolerances and uniform material densities. A common method for testing dice fairness is the chi-square statistic, which is typically assumed to follow the chi-square distribution. However, this assumption is only asymptotically valid.

Exact distributions of the statistic can be computed for dice with few sides and a limited number of rolls—such as 2-sided (D2) and 4-sided (D4) dice—but the computational …

Video Game Genre Classification Based On Deep Learning, Yuhang Jiang Oct 2020

Video Game Genre Classification Based On Deep Learning, Yuhang Jiang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Video games have played a more and more important role in our life. While the genre classification is a deeply explored research subject by leveraging the strength of deep learning, the automatic video game genre classification has drawn little attention in academia. In this study, we compiled a large dataset of 50,000 video games, consisting of the video game covers, game descriptions and the genre information. We explored three approaches for genre classification using deep learning techniques. First, we developed five image-based models utilizing pre-trained computer vision models such as MobileNet, ResNet50 and Inception, based on the game covers. Second, …

Dice Questions Answered, Warren Campbell, William P. Dolan Apr 2020

Dice Questions Answered, Warren Campbell, William P. Dolan

SEAS Faculty Publications

Superstitious discussion of fair and unfair dice has pervaded the tabletop gaming industry since its inception. Many of these are not based on any quantitative data or studies. Consequently, misconceptions have been spread widely. One dice float test video on Youtube currently has 925,000 views (Fisher, 2015a). To combat the flood of misconceptions we investigated the following questions: 1) Are dice cursed? 2) Are D20s (20-sided dice) less fair than D6s (6-sided dice)? 3) Do float tests tell anything about the fairness of dice? 4) Are some dice systems inherently fairer than others? 5) Are density differences or dimensions more …

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

All dice are unfair because they cannot be manufactured with absolute precision. However, some dice are more unfair than others. Each year hundreds of millions of dice are sold worldwide. Dice commonly used in role playing games are 4-sided (D4), 6-sided (D6), 8-sided (D8), 10-sided (D10), 12-sided (D12), and 20-sided (D20). Most of these are manufactured using plastic mold injection and rock tumbler methods. This method can result in dimensional inaccuracies in the dice and sometimes density inhomogeneities. In 3000-roll tests of eleven D20 dice only three tested fair. In a running chi square test it was shown that for …

Score Test And Likelihood Ratio Test For Zero-Inflated Binomial Distribution And Geometric Distribution, Xiaogang Dai Apr 2018

Score Test And Likelihood Ratio Test For Zero-Inflated Binomial Distribution And Geometric Distribution, Xiaogang Dai

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The main purpose of this thesis is to compare the performance of the score test and the likelihood ratio test by computing type I errors and type II errors when the tests are applied to the geometric distribution and inflated binomial distribution. We first derive test statistics of the score test and the likelihood ratio test for both distributions. We then use the software package R to perform a simulation to study the behavior of the two tests. We derive the R codes to calculate the two types of error for each distribution. We create lots of samples to approximate …

Boundary Problems For One And Two Dimensional Random Walks, Miky Wright May 2015

Boundary Problems For One And Two Dimensional Random Walks, Miky Wright

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis provides a study of various boundary problems for one and two dimensional random walks. We first consider a one-dimensional random walk that starts at integer-valued height k > 0, with a lower boundary being the x-axis, and on each step moving downward with probability q being greater than or equal to the probability of going upward p. We derive the variance and the standard deviation of the number of steps T needed for the height to reach 0 from k, by first deriving the moment generating function of T. We then study two types of two-dimensional random walks with …

The Torsion Angle Of Random Walks, Mu He May 2013

The Torsion Angle Of Random Walks, Mu He

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis, we study the expected mean of the torsion angle of an n-step
equilateral random walk in 3D. We consider the random walk is generated within a confining sphere or without a confining sphere: given three consecutive vectors e1 , e2 , and e3 of the random walk then the vectors e1 and e2 define a plane and the vectors e2 and e3 define a second plane. The angle between the two planes is called the torsion angle of the three vectors. Algorithms are …
