Modeling And Mathematical Analysis Of Plant Models In Ecology, Eric A. Eager Aug 2012

Modeling And Mathematical Analysis Of Plant Models In Ecology, Eric A. Eager

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Population dynamics tries to explain in a simple mechanistic way the variations of the size and structure of biological populations. In this dissertation we use mathematical modeling and analysis to study the various aspects of the dynamics of plant populations and their seed banks.

In Chapter 2 we investigate the impact of structural model uncertainty by considering different nonlinear recruitment functions in an integral projection model for Cirsium canescens. We show that, while having identical equilibrium populations, these two models can elicit drastically different transient dynamics. We then derive a formula for the sensitivity of the equilibrium population to …

Response Surface Optimization Of Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication Depositions Using Design Of Experiments, Patricia A. Quigley Jul 2012

Response Surface Optimization Of Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication Depositions Using Design Of Experiments, Patricia A. Quigley

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication (EBF3 ) System is a material depositing, layer additive technique that produces three dimensional (3D) parts out of a wide range of metals in high vacuum, using an electron beam and wire feedstock. Screening deposition trials on a titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, at the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) revealed selective vaporization of the aluminum content of linear prototypes when subjected to chemical analysis. In this study, the aluminum content, bead height and bead width output responses were analyzed from a systematic study of the effects that the interactions of the EBF3 processing parameters …

Adaptive Randomization Designs, Jenna Colavincenzo Jun 2012

Adaptive Randomization Designs, Jenna Colavincenzo

Statistics

Adaptive design methodologies use prior information to develop a clinical trial design. The goal of an adaptive design is to maintain the integrity and validity of the study while giving the researcher flexibility in identifying the optimal treatment. An example of an adaptive design can be seen in a basic pharmaceutical trial. There are three phases of the overall trial to compare treatments and experimenters use the information from the previous phase to make changes to the subsequent phase before it begins.

Adaptive design methods have been in practice since the 1970s, but have become increasingly complex ever since. One …

Markov Bases For Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis Of Partially Ranked Data, Ann Johnston May 2011

Markov Bases For Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis Of Partially Ranked Data, Ann Johnston

HMC Senior Theses

Given the result $v_0$ of a survey and a nested collection of summary statistics that could be used to describe that result, it is natural to ask which of these summary statistics best describe $v_0$. In 1998 Diaconis and Sturmfels presented an approach for determining the conditional significance of a higher order statistic, after sampling a space conditioned on the value of a lower order statistic. Their approach involves the computation of a Markov basis, followed by the use of a Markov process with stationary hypergeometric distribution to generate a sample. This technique for data analysis has become an accepted tool …

An Approximate Analytical Solution Of The Fractional Diffusion Equation With External Force And Different Type Of Absorbent Term - Revisited, S. Das, R. Kumar, P. K. Gupta Aug 2010

An Approximate Analytical Solution Of The Fractional Diffusion Equation With External Force And Different Type Of Absorbent Term - Revisited, S. Das, R. Kumar, P. K. Gupta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) is applied to obtain an approximate analytical solution of a fractional diffusion equation with an external force and a reaction term different from the reaction term used by Das and Gupta (2010). The anomalous behavior of diffusivity in presence or absence of linear external force due to the presence of this force of reaction term are obtained and presented graphically.

Determining The Success Of Ncaa Basketball Teams Through Team Characteristics, Raymond Witkos

Honors Projects in Mathematics

Every year much of the nation becomes engulfed in the NCAA basketball postseason tournament more affectionately known as “March Madness.” The tournament has received the name because of the ability for any team to win a single game and advance to the next round. The purpose of this study is to determine whether concrete statistical measures can be used to predict the final outcome of the tournament. The data collected in the study include 13 independent variables ranging from the 2003-2004 season up until the current 2009-2010 season. Different tests were run in an attempt to achieve the most accurate …

On Generalized Hurwitz-Lerch Zeta Distributions, Mridula Garg, Kumkum Jain, S. L. Kalla Jun 2009

On Generalized Hurwitz-Lerch Zeta Distributions, Mridula Garg, Kumkum Jain, S. L. Kalla

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we introduce a function which is an extension to the general Hurwitz-Lerch Zeta function. Having defined the incomplete generalized beta type-2 and incomplete generalized gamma functions, some differentiation formulae are established for these incomplete functions. We have introduced two new statistical distributions, termed as generalized Hurwitz-Lerch Zeta beta type-2 distribution and generalized Hurwitz-Lerch Zeta gamma distribution and then derived the expressions for the moments, distribution function, the survivor function, the hazard rate function and the mean residue life function for these distributions. Graphs for both these distributions are given, which reflect the role of shape and scale …

The Weak Euler Scheme For Stochastic Delay Equations, Evelyn Buckwar, Rachel Kuske, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tony Shardlow May 2008

The Weak Euler Scheme For Stochastic Delay Equations, Evelyn Buckwar, Rachel Kuske, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tony Shardlow

Articles and Preprints

We study weak convergence of an Euler scheme for non-linear stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) driven by multidimensional Brownian motion. The Euler scheme has weak order of convergence 1, as in the case of stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs) (i.e., without delay). The result holds for SDDEs with multiple finite fixed delays in the drift and diffusion terms. Although the set-up is non-anticipating, our approach uses the Malliavin calculus and the anticipating stochastic analysis techniques of Nualart and Pardoux.

Quasigeometric Distributions And Extra Inning Baseball Games, Darren B. Glass, Philip J. Lowry Apr 2008

Quasigeometric Distributions And Extra Inning Baseball Games, Darren B. Glass, Philip J. Lowry

Math Faculty Publications

Each July, the eyes of baseball fans across the country turn to Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, gathering the best and most popular players from baseball’s two leagues to play against each other in a single game. In most sports, the All-Star Game is an exhibition played purely for entertainment. Since 2003, the baseball All-Star Game has actually ‘counted’, because the winning league gets home field advantage in the World Series. Just one year before this rule went into effect, there was no winner in the All-Star Game, as both teams ran out of pitchers in the 11th inning and …

Octahedral Dice, Todd Estroff, Jeremiah Farrell Jan 2008

Octahedral Dice, Todd Estroff, Jeremiah Farrell

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

All five Platonic solids have been used as random number generators in games involving chance with the cube being the most popular. Martin Gardenr, in his article on dice (MG 1977) remarks: "Why cubical?... It is the easiest to make, its six sides accomodate a set of numbers neither too large nor too small, and it rolls easily enough but not too easily."

Gardner adds that the octahedron has been the next most popular as a randomizer. We offer here several problems and games using octahedral dice. The first two are extensions from Gardner's article. All answers will be given …

Tests For Correlation On Bivariate Nonnormal Distributions, Louanne Margaret Beversdorf Jan 2008

Tests For Correlation On Bivariate Nonnormal Distributions, Louanne Margaret Beversdorf

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many samples in the real world are very small in size and often do not follow a normal distribution. Existing tests for correlation have restrictions on the distribution of data and sample sizes, therefore the current tests cannot be used in some real world situations.

In this thesis, two tests are considered to test hypotheses about the population correlation coefficient. The tests are based on statistics transformed by a saddlepoint approximation and by Fisher's Z-transformation. The tests are conducted on small samples of bivariate nonnormal data and found to perfom well.

Simulations were run in order to compare the type …

The Substitution Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang Dec 2007

The Substitution Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang

Articles and Preprints

In this article we establish a substitution theorem for semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see's) depending on the initial condition as an infinite-dimensional parameter. Due to the infinitedimensionality of the initial conditions and of the stochastic dynamics, existing finite-dimensional results do not apply. The substitution theorem is proved using Malliavin calculus techniques together with new estimates on the underlying stochastic semiflow. Applications of the theorem include dynamic characterizations of solutions of stochastic partial differential equations (spde's) with anticipating initial conditions and non-ergodic stationary solutions. In particular, our result gives a new existence theorem for solutions of semilinear Stratonovich spde's with anticipating …

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations And Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang, Huaizhong Zhao Jan 2006

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations And Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang, Huaizhong Zhao

Articles and Preprints

The main objective of this paper is to characterize the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see’s) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde’s) near stationary solutions. Such characterization is realized through the long-term behavior of the solution field near stationary points. The analysis falls in two parts 1, 2.

In Part 1, we prove general existence and compactness theorems for Ck-cocycles of semilinear see’s and spde’s. Our results cover a large class of semilinear see’s as well as certain semilinear spde’s with Lipschitz and non-Lipschitz terms such as stochastic reaction diffusion equations and the …

Remarks On Risk-Sensitive Control Problems, José Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin Oct 2005

Remarks On Risk-Sensitive Control Problems, José Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the discounted risk-sensitive control problem for periodic diffusion processes when the discount factor α goes to zero. If uα(θ, x) denotes the optimal cost function, being the risk factor, then it is shown that limα→0αuα(θ, x) = ξ(θ) where ξ(θ) is the average on ]0, θ[ of the optimal cost of the (usual) in nite horizon risk-sensitive control problem.

Random Walks On The Torus With Several Generators, Timothy Prescott '02, Francis E. Su Oct 2004

Random Walks On The Torus With Several Generators, Timothy Prescott '02, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Given n vectors {i} ∈ [0, 1)d, consider a random walk on the d-dimensional torus d = ℝd/ℤd generated by these vectors by successive addition and subtraction. For certain sets of vectors, this walk converges to Haar (uniform) measure on the torus. We show that the discrepancy distance D(Q*k) between the kth step distribution of the walk and Haar measure is bounded below by D(Q*k) ≥ C1k−n/2, where C1 = C(n, d) is …

Mathematical And Empirical Modeling Of Chemical Reactions In A Microreactor, Jing Hu Apr 2004

Mathematical And Empirical Modeling Of Chemical Reactions In A Microreactor, Jing Hu

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with mathematical and empirical modeling to simulate three important chemical reactions (cyclohexene hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide, and the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis in a microreaction system.

Empirical modeling and optimization techniques based on experimental design (Central Composite Design (CCD)) and response surface methodology were applied to these three chemical reactions. Regression models were built, and the operating conditions (such as temperature, the ratio of the reactants, and total flow rate) which maximize reactant conversion and product selectivity were determined for each reaction.

A probability model for predicting the probability that a certain species …

Discrete-Time Approximations Of Stochastic Delay Equations: The Milstein Scheme, Yaozhong Hu, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Feng Yan Jan 2004

Discrete-Time Approximations Of Stochastic Delay Equations: The Milstein Scheme, Yaozhong Hu, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Feng Yan

Articles and Preprints

In this paper, we develop a strong Milstein approximation scheme for solving stochastic delay differential equations (SDDE's). The scheme has convergence order 1. In order to establish the scheme, we prove an infinite-dimensional Itô formula for "tame" functions acting on the segment process of the solution of an SDDE. It is interesting to note that the presence of the memory in the SDDE requires the use of the Malliavin calculus and the anticipating stochastic analysis of Nualart and Pardoux. Given the non-anticipating nature of the SDDE, the use of anticipating calculus methods appears to be novel.

On Choosing And Bounding Probability Metrics, Alison L. Gibbs, Francis E. Su Dec 2002

On Choosing And Bounding Probability Metrics, Alison L. Gibbs, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

When studying convergence of measures, an important issue is the choice of probability metric. We provide a summary and some new results concerning bounds among some important probability metrics/distances that are used by statisticians and probabilists. Knowledge of other metrics can provide a means of deriving bounds for another one in an applied problem. Considering other metrics can also provide alternate insights. We also give examples that show that rates of convergence can strongly depend on the metric chosen. Careful consideration is necessary when choosing a metric.

Stochastic 2-D Navier-Stokes Equation, J. L. Menaldi, S. S. Sritharan Oct 2002

Stochastic 2-D Navier-Stokes Equation, J. L. Menaldi, S. S. Sritharan

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation in bounded and unbounded domains. These solutions are stochastic analogs of the classical Lions-Prodi solutions to the deterministic Navier-Stokes equation. Local monotonicity of the nonlinearity is exploited to obtain the solutions in a given probability space and this signi cantly improves the earlier techniques for obtaining strong solutions, which depended on pathwise solutions to the Navier-Stokes martingale problem where the probability space is also obtained as a part of the solution.

Fuzzy Product -Limit Estimators: Soft Computing In The Presence Of Very Small And Highly Censored Data Sets, Kian Lawrence Pokorny Apr 2002

Fuzzy Product -Limit Estimators: Soft Computing In The Presence Of Very Small And Highly Censored Data Sets, Kian Lawrence Pokorny

Doctoral Dissertations

When very few data are available and a high proportion of the data is censored, accurate estimates of reliability are problematic. Standard statistical methods require a more complete data set, and with any fewer data, expert knowledge or heuristic methods are required. In the current research a computational system is developed that obtains a survival curve, point estimate, and confidence interval about the point estimate.

The system uses numerical methods to define fuzzy membership functions about each data point that quantify uncertainty due to censoring. The “fuzzy” data are then used to estimate a survival curve, and the mean survival …

Stochastic Functional Differential Equations On Manifolds, Rémi Léandre, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed Sep 2001

Stochastic Functional Differential Equations On Manifolds, Rémi Léandre, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Articles and Preprints

In this paper, we study stochastic functional differential equations (sfde's) whose solutions are constrained to live on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to such sfde's. We consider examples of geometrical sfde's and establish the smooth dependence of the solution on finite-dimensional parameters.

Discrepancy Convergence For The Drunkard's Walk On The Sphere, Francis E. Su Feb 2001

Discrepancy Convergence For The Drunkard's Walk On The Sphere, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We analyze the drunkard's walk on the unit sphere with step size θ and show that the walk converges in order C/sin2(θ) steps in the discrepancy metric (C a constant). This is an application of techniques we develop for bounding the discrepancy of random walks on Gelfand pairs generated by bi-invariant measures. In such cases, Fourier analysis on the acting group admits tractable computations involving spherical functions. We advocate the use of discrepancy as a metric on probabilities for state spaces with isometric group actions.

A Leveque-Type Lower Bound For Discrepancy, Francis E. Su Jan 2000

A Leveque-Type Lower Bound For Discrepancy, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A sharp lower bound for discrepancy on R / Z is derived that resembles the upper bound due to LeVeque. An analogous bound is proved for discrepancy on Rk / Zk. These are discussed in the more general context of the discrepancy of probablity measures. As applications, the bounds are applied to Kronecker sequences and to a random walk on the torus.

Invariant Measure For Diffusions With Jumps, Jose-Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin Feb 1999

Invariant Measure For Diffusions With Jumps, Jose-Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

Our purpose is to study an ergodic linear equation associated to diffusion processes with jumps in the whole space. This integro-differential equation plays a fundamental role in ergodic control problems of second order Markov processes. The key result is to prove the existence and uniqueness of an invariant density function for a jump diffusion, whose lower order coefficients are only Borel measurable. Based on this invariant probability, existence and uniqueness (up to an additive constant) of solutions to the ergodic linear equation are established.

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Stochastic Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow Jan 1999

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Stochastic Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow

Articles and Preprints

We formulate and prove a local stable manifold theorem for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) that are driven by spatial Kunita-type semimartingales with stationary ergodic increments. Both Stratonovich and Itô-type equations are treated. Starting with the existence of a stochastic flow for a SDE, we introduce the notion of a hyperbolic stationary trajectory. We prove the existence of invariant random stable and unstable manifolds in the neighborhood of the hyperbolic stationary solution. For Stratonovich SDEs, the stable and unstable manifolds are dynamically characterized using forward and backward solutions of the anticipating SDE. The proof of the stable manifold theorem is based …

Spatial Estimates For Stochastic Flows In Euclidean Space, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow Jan 1998

Spatial Estimates For Stochastic Flows In Euclidean Space, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Michael K. R. Scheutzow

Articles and Preprints

We study the behavior for large |x| of Kunita-type stochastic flows φ(t, ω, x) on Rd, driven by continuous spatial semimartingales. For this class of flows we prove new spatial estimates for large |x|, under very mild regularity conditions on the driving semimartingale random field. It is expected that the results would be of interest for the theory of stochastic flows on noncompact manifolds as well as in the study of nonlinear filtering, stochastic functional and partial differential equations. Some examples and counterexamples are given.

Convergence Of Random Walks On The Circle Generated By An Irrational Rotation, Francis E. Su Jan 1998

Convergence Of Random Walks On The Circle Generated By An Irrational Rotation, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Fix . Consider the random walk on the circle which proceeds by repeatedly rotating points forward or backward, with probability , by an angle . This paper analyzes the rate of convergence of this walk to the uniform distribution under ``discrepancy'' distance. The rate depends on the continued fraction properties of the number . We obtain bounds for rates when is any irrational, and a sharp rate when is a quadratic irrational. In that case the discrepancy falls as (up to constant factors), where is the number of steps in the walk. This is the first example of a sharp …
