Exploring New Models For Seatbelt Use In Survey Data, Mark K. Ledbetter, Norou Diawara, Bryan E. Porter Oct 2016

Exploring New Models For Seatbelt Use In Survey Data, Mark K. Ledbetter, Norou Diawara, Bryan E. Porter

Virginia Journal of Science

Problem: Several approaches to analyze seatbelt use have been proposed in the literature. Two methods that have not been explored are the use of unweighted and weighted logistic regression models and the use of item response theory (IRT) or the Rasch model. Since accurate methods to predict seatbelt use behavior based upon observed data must include a built-in design method and model and overcome computation challenges, weighted and IRT methods deem to be other options for an observational survey of seatbelt use in the state of Virginia.

Method: The data observed from 136 sites within the Commonwealth of …

Design Optimization Of A Stochastic Multi-Objective Problem: Gaussian Process Regressions For Objective Surrogates, Juan Sebastian Martinez, Piyush Pandita, Rohit K. Tripathy, Ilias Bilionis Aug 2016

Design Optimization Of A Stochastic Multi-Objective Problem: Gaussian Process Regressions For Objective Surrogates, Juan Sebastian Martinez, Piyush Pandita, Rohit K. Tripathy, Ilias Bilionis

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Multi-objective optimization (MOO) problems arise frequently in science and engineering situations. In an optimization problem, we want to find the set of input parameters that generate the set of optimal outputs, mathematically known as the Pareto frontier (PF). Solving the MOO problem is a challenge since expensive experiments can be performed only a constrained number of times and there is a limited set of data to work with, e.g. a roll-to-roll microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) reactor for manufacturing high quality graphene. State-of-the-art techniques, e.g. evolutionary algorithms; particle swarm optimization, require a large amount of observations and do not …

A Two-Strain Tb Model With Multiple Latent Stages, Azizeh Jabbari, Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Fereshteh Nazari, Baojun Song, Hossein Kheiri Aug 2016

A Two-Strain Tb Model With Multiple Latent Stages, Azizeh Jabbari, Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Fereshteh Nazari, Baojun Song, Hossein Kheiri

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A two-strain tuberculosis (TB) transmission model incorporating antibiotic-generated TB resistant strains and long and variable waiting periods within the latently infected class is introduced. The mathematical analysis is carried out when the waiting periods are modeled via parametrically friendly gamma distributions, a reasonable alternative to the use of exponential distributed waiting periods or to integral equations involving "arbitrary" distributions. The model supports a globally-asymptotically stable disease-free equilibrium when the reproduction number is less than one and an endemic equilibriums, shown to be locally asymptotically stable, or l.a.s., whenever the basic reproduction number is greater than one. Conditions for the existence …

Methods To Account For Breed Composition In A Bayesian Gwas Method Which Utilizes Haplotype Clusters, Danielle F. Wilson-Wells Aug 2016

Methods To Account For Breed Composition In A Bayesian Gwas Method Which Utilizes Haplotype Clusters, Danielle F. Wilson-Wells

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In livestock, prediction of an animal’s genetic merit using genomic information is becoming increasingly common. The models used to make these predictions typically assume that we are sampling from a homogeneous population. However, in both commercial and experimental populations the sire and dam of an individual may be a mixture of different breeds. Haplotype models can capture this population structure.

Two models based on breed specific haplotype clusters where developed to account for differences across multiple breeds. The first model utilizes the breed composition of the individual, while the second utilizes the breed composition from the sire and dam. Haplotype …

The Influence Of The Electric Supply Industry On Economic Growth In Less Developed Countries, Edward Richard Bee Aug 2016

The Influence Of The Electric Supply Industry On Economic Growth In Less Developed Countries, Edward Richard Bee

Dissertations

This study measures the impact that electrical outages have on manufacturing production in 135 less developed countries using stochastic frontier analysis and data from World Bank’s Investment Climate surveys. Outages of electricity, for firms with and without backup power sources, are the most frequently cited constraint on manufacturing growth in these surveys.

Outages are shown to reduce output below the production frontier by almost five percent in Africa and by a lower percentage in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. Production response to outages is quadratic in form. Outages also increase labor cost, reduce exports …

Multilevel Models For Longitudinal Data, Aastha Khatiwada Aug 2016

Multilevel Models For Longitudinal Data, Aastha Khatiwada

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Longitudinal data arise when individuals are measured several times during an ob- servation period and thus the data for each individual are not independent. There are several ways of analyzing longitudinal data when different treatments are com- pared. Multilevel models are used to analyze data that are clustered in some way. In this work, multilevel models are used to analyze longitudinal data from a case study. Results from other more commonly used methods are compared to multilevel models. Also, comparison in output between two software, SAS and R, is done. Finally a method consisting of fitting individual models for each …

Wind Climatology: A Study Of Trends On Rodgers' Dry Lakebed, Dana Coppernoll-Houston Aug 2016

Wind Climatology: A Study Of Trends On Rodgers' Dry Lakebed, Dana Coppernoll-Houston

STAR Program Research Presentations

A number of smaller projects at the Armstrong Flight Research Center fly on or close to the ground and are subject to ground-level winds. Many of these are new prototype models, such as PRANDTL-D (Preliminary Research Aerodynamic Design to Lower Drag). Waiting for the right conditions on a day of variable winds can sometimes mean that teams fail to complete testing. A strategic analysis of wind behavior at a locations where winds can vary greatly due to terrain could lend insight into the best times to test for near-ground aircraft. The purpose of this project was to data mine historical …

Utilizing Computed To Mography Image Features To Advance Prediction Of Radiation Pneumonitis, Shane P. Krafft

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Improving outcomes for non-small-cell lung cancer patients treated with radiation therapy (RT) requires optimizing the balance between local tumor control and risk of normal tissue toxicity. In approximately 20% of patients, severe acute symptomatic lung toxicity, termed radiation pneumonitis (RP), still occurs. Identifying the individuals at risk of RP prior to or early during treatment offers tremendous potential to improve RT by providing the physician with information to assist in making clinical decisions that enhance therapy. Our central goal for this work was to demonstrate the potential gain in predictive accuracy of normal tissue complication probability models for RP by …

Newsvendor Models With Monte Carlo Sampling, Ijeoma W. Ekwegh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Newsvendor Models with Monte Carlo Sampling by Ijeoma Winifred Ekwegh The newsvendor model is used in solving inventory problems in which demand is random. In this thesis, we will focus on a method of using Monte Carlo sampling to estimate the order quantity that will either maximizes revenue or minimizes cost given that demand is uncertain. Given data, the Monte Carlo approach will be used in sampling data over scenarios and also estimating the probability density function. A bootstrapping process yields an empirical distribution for the order quantity that will maximize the expected profit. Finally, this method will be used …

Well I'Ll Be Damned - Insights Into Predictive Value Of Pedigree Information In Horse Racing, Timothy Baker Mr, Ming-Chien Sung, Johnnie Johnson Professor, Tiejun Ma Jun 2016

Well I'Ll Be Damned - Insights Into Predictive Value Of Pedigree Information In Horse Racing, Timothy Baker Mr, Ming-Chien Sung, Johnnie Johnson Professor, Tiejun Ma

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Fundamental form characteristics like how fast a horse ran at its last start, are widely used to help predict the outcome of horse racing events. The exception being in races where horses haven’t previously competed, such as Maiden races, where there is little or no publicly available past performance information. In these types of events bettors need only consider a simplified suite of factors however this is offset by a higher level of uncertainty. This paper examines the inherent information content embedded within a horse’s ancestry and the extent to which this information is discounted in the United Kingdom bookmaker …

Stochastic Processes And Their Applications To Change Point Detection Problems, Heng Yang Jun 2016

Stochastic Processes And Their Applications To Change Point Detection Problems, Heng Yang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation addresses the change point detection problem when either the post-change distribution has uncertainty or the post-change distribution is time inhomogeneous. In the case of post-change distribution uncertainty, attention is drawn to the construction of a family of composite stopping times. It is shown that the proposed composite stopping time has third order optimality in the detection problem with Wiener observations and also provides information to distinguish the different values of post-change drift. In the case of post-change distribution uncertainty, a computationally efficient decision rule with low-complexity based on Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) algorithm is also introduced. In the time …

The Importance Of Prediction Model Validation And Assessment In Obesity And Nutrition Research, Andrada Ivanescu, P. Li, B. George, A. W. Brown, S. W. Keith, D. Raju, D. B. Allison Jun 2016

The Importance Of Prediction Model Validation And Assessment In Obesity And Nutrition Research, Andrada Ivanescu, P. Li, B. George, A. W. Brown, S. W. Keith, D. Raju, D. B. Allison

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Deriving statistical models to predict one variable from one or more other variables, or predictive modeling, is an important activity in obesity and nutrition research. To determine the quality of the model, it is necessary to quantify and report the predictive validity of the derived models. Conducting validation of the predictive measures provides essential information to the research community about the model. Unfortunately, many articles fail to account for the nearly inevitable reduction in predictive ability that occurs when a model derived on one data set is applied to a new data set. Under some circumstances, the predictive validity can …

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In his classic study in 1908, A.M. Worthington gave a thorough account of splashes and their formation through visualization experiments. In more recent times, there has been renewed interest in this subject, and much of the underlying physics behind Worthington's experiments has now been clarified. One specific set of such recent studies, which motivates this paper, concerns the fluid dynamics behind Jackson Pollock's drip paintings. The physical processes and the mathematical structures hidden in his works have received serious attention and made the scientific pursuit of art a compelling area of exploration. Our current work explores the interaction of watercolors …

Metals Additive Manufacturing Powder Aging Characterization, Thomas Russell Lovejoy, Nicholas Karl Muetterties, David Takeo Otsu Jun 2016

Metals Additive Manufacturing Powder Aging Characterization, Thomas Russell Lovejoy, Nicholas Karl Muetterties, David Takeo Otsu

Mechanical Engineering

The metallic additive manufacturing process known as selective laser melting requires highly spherical, normally distributed powder with diameters in the range of 10 to 50 microns. Previous observations have shown a degradation in powder quality over time, resulting in unwanted characteristics in the final printed parts. 21-6-9 stainless steel powder was used to fabricate test parts, with leftover powder recycled back into the machine. Powder samples and test specimens were characterized to observe changes across build cycles. Few changes were observed in the physical and mechanical properties of the specimens, however, there were indications of chemical changes across cycles. Potential …

Failure Of Surface Color Cues Under Natural Changes In Lighting, David H. Foster, Iván Marín-Franch May 2016

Failure Of Surface Color Cues Under Natural Changes In Lighting, David H. Foster, Iván Marín-Franch

MODVIS Workshop

Color allows us to effortlessly discriminate and identify surfaces and objects by their reflected light. Although the reflected spectrum changes with the illumination spectrum, cone photoreceptor signals can be transformed to give useful cues for surface color. But what happens when both the spectrum and the geometry of the illumination change, as with lighting from the sun and sky? Is it possible, as a matter of principle, to obtain reliable cues by processing cone signals alone? This question was addressed here by estimating the information provided by cone signals from time-lapse hyperspectral radiance images of five outdoor scenes under natural …

Automated Sea State Classification From Parameterization Of Survey Observations And Wave-Generated Displacement Data, Jason A. Teichman May 2016

Automated Sea State Classification From Parameterization Of Survey Observations And Wave-Generated Displacement Data, Jason A. Teichman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Sea state is a subjective quantity whose accuracy depends on an observer’s ability to translate local wind waves into numerical scales. It provides an analytical tool for estimating the impact of the sea on data quality and operational safety. Tasks dependent on the characteristics of local sea surface conditions often require accurate and immediate assessment. An attempt to automate sea state classification using eleven years of ship motion and sea state observation data is made using parametric modeling of distribution-based confidence and tolerance intervals and a probabilistic model using sea state frequencies. Models utilizing distribution intervals are not able to …

Population Projection And Habitat Preference Modeling Of The Endangered James Spinymussel (Pleurobema Collina), Marisa Draper May 2016

Population Projection And Habitat Preference Modeling Of The Endangered James Spinymussel (Pleurobema Collina), Marisa Draper

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The James Spinymussel (Pleurobema collina) is an endangered mussel species at the top of Virginia’s conservation list. The James Spinymussel plays a critical role in the environment by filtering and cleaning stream water while providing shelter and food for macroinvertebrates; however, conservation efforts are complicated by the mussels’ burrowing behavior, camouflage, and complex life cycle. The goals of the research conducted were to estimate detection probabilities that could be used to predict species presence and facilitate field work, and to track individually marked mussels to test for habitat preferences. Using existing literature and mark-recapture field data, these goals were accomplished …

Microarrays allow the study of the expression profile of hundreds to thousands of genes simultaneously. These expressions could be from treated samples and the healthy controls. The Esscher transformed Laplace distribution is used to fit microarray expression data as compared to Normal and Laplace distributions. The Maximum Likelihood Estimation procedure is used to estimate the parameters of the distribution. R codes are developed to implement the estimation procedure. A simulation study is carried out to test the performance of the algorithm. AIC and BIC criterion are used to compare the distributions. It is shown that the fit of the Esscher …

The Goldilocks Dilemma: Impacts Of Multicollinearity -- A Comparison Of Simple Linear Regression, Multiple Regression, And Ordered Variable Regression Models, Grayson L. Baird, Stephen L. Bieber May 2016

The Goldilocks Dilemma: Impacts Of Multicollinearity -- A Comparison Of Simple Linear Regression, Multiple Regression, And Ordered Variable Regression Models, Grayson L. Baird, Stephen L. Bieber

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A common consideration concerning the application of multiple linear regression is the lack of independence among predictors (multicollinearity). The main purpose of this article is to introduce an alternative method of regression originally outlined by Woolf (1951), which completely eliminates the relatedness between the predictors in a multiple predictor setting.

Solution To The Multicollinearity Problem By Adding Some Constant To The Diagonal, Hanan Duzan, Nurul Sima Binti Mohamaed Shariff May 2016

Solution To The Multicollinearity Problem By Adding Some Constant To The Diagonal, Hanan Duzan, Nurul Sima Binti Mohamaed Shariff

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Ridge regression is an alternative to ordinary least-squares (OLS) regression. It is believed to be superior to least-squares regression in the presence of multicollinearity. The robustness of this method is investigated and comparison is made with the least squares method through simulation studies. Our results show that the system stabilizes in a region of k, where k is a positive quantity less than one and whose values depend on the degree of correlation between the independent variables. The results also illustrate that k is a linear function of the correlation between the independent variables.

Symmetric Variants Of Logistic Smooth Transition Autoregressive Models: Monte Carlo Evidences, Olaoluwa S. Yaya, Olanrewaju I. Shittu May 2016

Symmetric Variants Of Logistic Smooth Transition Autoregressive Models: Monte Carlo Evidences, Olaoluwa S. Yaya, Olanrewaju I. Shittu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Smooth Transition Autoregressive (STAR) models are becoming popular in modeling economic and financial time series. The asymmetric type of the model is the Logistic STAR (LSTAR) model, which is limited in its applications as a result of its asymmetric property, which makes it suitable for modelling specific macroeconomic time series. This study was designed to develop the Absolute Error LSTAR (AELSTAR) and Quadratic LSTAR (QLSTAR) models for improving symmetry and performance in terms of model fitness. Modified Teräsvirta’s Procedure (TP) and Escribano and Jordá's Procedure (EJP) were used to test for nonlinearity in the series. The performance of the …

An Evaluation Of Pareto, Lognormal And Pps Distributions: The Size Distribution Of Cities In Kerala, India, Christopher A. Vallabados, Subbarayan A. Arumugam

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Pareto-Positive Stable (PPS) distribution is introduced as a new model for describing city size data of a region in a country. The PPS distribution provides a flexible model for fitting the entire range of a set of city size data and the classical Pareto and Zipf distributions are included as a particular case.
