International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
Abstract:
A common difficulty when researching gambling topics is the availability of high-quality data sets for development and testing. Due to the high level of secrecy within the gambling industry, if data is obtained for research purposes it is often prohibitively obfuscated, incomplete, or aggregated. Although these data have allowed for advancement in academic work, it leaves both the researchers and readers left wondering about what would be possible if more detailed data sets were available. To mitigate the paucity of data available to researchers, we present a Markov chain-based statistical process for producing artificial event data for a simulated …

Optimizing Tumor Xenograft Experiments Using Bayesian Linear And Nonlinear Mixed Modelling And Reinforcement Learning, Mary Lena Bleile
Optimizing Tumor Xenograft Experiments Using Bayesian Linear And Nonlinear Mixed Modelling And Reinforcement Learning, Mary Lena Bleile
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Tumor xenograft experiments are a popular tool of cancer biology research. In a typical such experiment, one implants a set of animals with an aliquot of the human tumor of interest, applies various treatments of interest, and observes the subsequent response. Efficient analysis of the data from these experiments is therefore of utmost importance. This dissertation proposes three methods for optimizing cancer treatment and data analysis in the tumor xenograft context. The first of these is applicable to tumor xenograft experiments in general, and the second two seek to optimize the combination of radiotherapy with immunotherapy in the tumor xenograft …
Movie Recommender System Using Matrix Factorization, Roland Fiagbe
Movie Recommender System Using Matrix Factorization, Roland Fiagbe
Data Science and Data Mining
Recommendation systems are a popular and beneficial field that can help people make informed decisions automatically. This technique assists users in selecting relevant information from an overwhelming amount of available data. When it comes to movie recommendations, two common methods are collaborative filtering, which compares similarities between users, and content-based filtering, which takes a user’s specific preferences into account. However, our study focuses on the collaborative filtering approach, specifically matrix factorization. Various similarity metrics are used to identify user similarities for recommendation purposes. Our project aims to predict movie ratings for unwatched movies using the MovieLens rating dataset. We developed …
An Analysis Of All-Cause Mortality On Patients With Sickle Cell Disease And Kidney Disease Using Propensity Score Matching, Adam Garrison
An Analysis Of All-Cause Mortality On Patients With Sickle Cell Disease And Kidney Disease Using Propensity Score Matching, Adam Garrison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this work, we provide an overview of the Cox proportional hazards model for time to event or survival analysis and the notion of propensity score matching to deal with confounding factors. A full analysis is reported in Chapter 2 concerning mortality for in-center dialysis patients with sickle cell disease to demonstrate the application of a general analysis strategy that has some logistical benefits over more traditional approaches to accounting for confounding variables. We also provide some insight and discussions on the challenges and future research questions that will emerge when trying to implement this strategy as a monitoring tool …
A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Nonprobability Sampling & Post Hoc Corrections, Julia Hong
A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Nonprobability Sampling & Post Hoc Corrections, Julia Hong
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Nonprobability samples are often used in place of probability samples because the former are less trouble and less expensive. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine how well a sample represents population parameters when using nonprobability samples. Researchers attempt to mitigate the disadvantages of nonprobability sampling by performing post hoc corrections, but this adjustment may not successfully undo the effects of nonprobability sampling. To examine these effects, a Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to create a pseudo-population from which samples were drawn. Forty-one conditions were replicated 10,000 times each, with each sample consisting of 100 observations. A post-stratification adjustment was made …
Employee Attrition: Analyzing Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction Of Ibm Data Scientists, Graham Nash
Employee Attrition: Analyzing Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction Of Ibm Data Scientists, Graham Nash
Symposium of Student Scholars
Employee attrition is a relevant issue that every business employer must consider when gauging the effectiveness of their employees. Whether or not an employee chooses to leave their job can come from a multitude of factors. As a result, employers need to develop methods in which they can measure attrition by calculating the several qualities of their employees. Factors like their age, years with the company, which department they work in, their level of education, their job role, and even their marital status are all considered by employers to assist in predicting employee attrition. This project will be analyzing a …
Finite Mixture Modeling For Hierarchically Structured Data With Application To Keystroke Dynamics, Andrew Simpson, Semhar Michael
Finite Mixture Modeling For Hierarchically Structured Data With Application To Keystroke Dynamics, Andrew Simpson, Semhar Michael
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Keystroke dynamics has been used to both authenticate users of computer systems and detect unauthorized users who attempt to access the system. Monitoring keystroke dynamics adds another level to computer security as passwords are often compromised. Keystrokes can also be continuously monitored long after a password has been entered and the user is accessing the system for added security. Many of the current methods that have been proposed are supervised methods in that they assume that the true user of each keystroke is known apriori. This is not always true for example with businesses and government agencies which have internal …
Modeling And Fitting Two-Way Tables Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth
Modeling And Fitting Two-Way Tables Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth
Articles
A model is proposed for two-way tables of measurement data containing outliers. The two independent variables are categorical and error free. Neither missing values nor replication are present. The model consists of the sum of a customary additive part that can be fit using least squares and a part that is composed of outliers. Recommendations are made for methods for identifying cells containing outliers and for fitting the model. A graph of the observations is used to determine the outliers’ locations. For all cells containing an outlier, replacement values are determined simultaneously using a classical missing-data tool. The result is …

Biasing Estimator To Mitigate Multicollinearity In Linear Regression Model, Abdulrasheed Bello Badawaire, Issam Dawoud, Adewale Folaranmi Lukman, Victoria Laoye, Arowolo Olatunji
Al-Bahir
A new two-parameter estimator was developed to combat the threat of multicollinearity for the linear regression model. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for the dominance of the proposed estimator over ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator, ridge regression estimator, Liu estimator, KL estimator, and some two-parameter estimators are obtained in the matrix mean square error sense. Theory and simulation results show that, under some conditions, the proposed two-parameter estimator consistently dominates other estimators considered in this study. The real-life application result follows suit.
Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo
Statistical Tolerance Regions For Flexible Modeling Paradigms, Yafan Guo
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
Tolerance intervals in a regression setting allow the user to quantify, with a specified degree of confidence, bounds for a specified proportion of the sampled population when conditioned on a set of covariate values. While methods are available for tolerance intervals in fully-parametric regression settings, the construction of tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models has been treated in a limited capacity. The first project fills this gap and develops likelihood-based approaches for the construction of pointwise one-sided and two-sided tolerance intervals for semiparametric regression models. A numerical approach is also presented for constructing simultaneous tolerance intervals. An appealing facet of …
Classification Of Adult Income Using Decision Tree, Roland Fiagbe
Classification Of Adult Income Using Decision Tree, Roland Fiagbe
Data Science and Data Mining
Decision tree is a commonly used data mining methodology for performing classification tasks. It is a tree-based supervised machine learning algorithm that is used to classify or make predictions in a path of how previous questions are answered. Generally, the decision tree algorithm categorizes data into branch-like segments that develop into a tree that contains a root, nodes, and leaves. This project seeks to explore the decision tree methodology and apply it to the Adult Income dataset from the UCI Machine Learning Repository, to determine whether a person makes over 50K per year and determine the necessary factors that improve …
Tolerance Intervals For Various Regression Models, Xitong Zhou
Tolerance Intervals For Various Regression Models, Xitong Zhou
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
Among statistical intervals, confidence intervals and prediction intervals are well-known and commonly used. In many applications, the problem becomes finding an interval that covers at least a certain proportion $P$ of the population for a characteristic of interest with a specified confidence level $(1-\alpha)$. And such interval is named a $P$-content, $(1-\alpha)$-confidence Tolerance Interval (TI). The topic of the dissertation is the utility of tolerance intervals for various regression models. We begin with a discussion of tolerance intervals for linear and nonlinear regression models. We then propose a bootstrap method of constructing TIs for Tobit regression to deal with censored …
Novel Modelling And Inference Considerations Involving The Exponentially-Modified Gaussian Distribution, Yanxi Li
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
The exponentially-modified Gaussian (EMG) distribution is well-suited for analyzing data with positive skewness due to its characteristic positive skew from the exponential component. Despite its popularity in various fields, the EMG distribution has only been analyzed for univariate data without any regression settings. To address this limitation, we developed a generalized EMG regression model with covariates by assigning parametric functional forms to some or all of the parameters in the EMG distribution that vary with values of the covariates. To further perform data-clustering on observation points, we propose a competing regression model where the error structure is assumed to be …
Methodologies And Computational Tools For Zero-Inflated Discrete Weibull Models, Peng Yeh
Methodologies And Computational Tools For Zero-Inflated Discrete Weibull Models, Peng Yeh
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
Count data with excess zeros is common in many fields, such as ecology, healthcare, and insurance. Excess zeros data are often causing the inaccurate fit from the count models. While zero-inflated models have been developing for over two decades, one should also consider a more flexible model that can handle the excess zeros and further over- or under-dispersion. In this talk, we discuss zero-inflated discrete Weibull model and some novel computational contributions. The flexibility and competitiveness of the ZIDW model are illustrated by simulation studies and a real data analysis. We also investigate the performance of the proposed model through …
Reassessing Replication: Addressing The Replication Crisis From A Statistical Perspective, Alicia Richards Phd
Reassessing Replication: Addressing The Replication Crisis From A Statistical Perspective, Alicia Richards Phd
Theses and Dissertations
In 2015, Open Science Framework directly replicated 100 psychology studies and found astonishingly low replication rates. Since, researchers have suggested factors that may have influenced the low rates, including the metrics used to assess replications. The definitions used to decide whether a replication study was successful all suffer from flaws. Therefore, we propose a new metric for assessing replication that can estimate the likelihood a study successfully replicated rather than forcing a binary choice and accounts for study design limitations.
Using equivalence study techniques, we first propose a new metric to assess replication, defining a successful replication as one where …
Bayesian Methods For Graphical Models With Neighborhood Selection., Sagnik Bhadury
Bayesian Methods For Graphical Models With Neighborhood Selection., Sagnik Bhadury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Graphical models determine associations between variables through the notion of conditional independence. Gaussian graphical models are a widely used class of such models, where the relationships are formalized by non-null entries of the precision matrix. However, in high-dimensional cases, covariance estimates are typically unstable. Moreover, it is natural to expect only a few significant associations to be present in many realistic applications. This necessitates the injection of sparsity techniques into the estimation method. Classical frequentist methods, like GLASSO, use penalization techniques for this purpose. Fully Bayesian methods, on the contrary, are slow because they require iteratively sampling over a quadratic …

As data collection becomes more precise, efficient, and standardized, a demand for appropriate statistical modeling grows as well. Throughout this dissertation, we examine a variety of new age data arising from modern technology of the 21st century. We begin by employing a suite of existing statistical techniques to address research questions surrounding three medical conditions presenting in public health sciences. Here we describe the techniques used, including generalized linear models and longitudinal models, and we summarize the significant associations identified between research …
Fiscal And Monetary Policy Interactions In A Developing Economy: A Dsge-Based Evidence From Nigeria, Queen E. Oye, Philip O. Alege
Fiscal And Monetary Policy Interactions In A Developing Economy: A Dsge-Based Evidence From Nigeria, Queen E. Oye, Philip O. Alege
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study characterizes the nature of fiscal-monetary interaction in Nigeria and gauges its macroeconomic effects by estimating a New Keynesian Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (NK DSGE) model. Two policy simulations were also conducted. The first experiment considers the desirable active-passive policy mix while the second experiment ranks alternative monetary policy rules among the differing objectives of price, output and exchange rate stabilization. The study finds that fiscal and monetary policies interact as complements in an active monetary and passive fiscal policy mix over the sample period. The result from the first policy simulation reveals that the active monetary and passive …
Learning Graphical Models Of Multivariate Functional Data With Applications To Neuroimaging, Jiajing Niu
Learning Graphical Models Of Multivariate Functional Data With Applications To Neuroimaging, Jiajing Niu
All Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the functional graphical models that infer the functional connectivity based on neuroimaging data, which is noisy, high dimensional and has limited samples. The dissertation provides two recipes to infer the functional graphical model: 1) a fully Bayesian framework 2) an end-to-end deep model.
We first propose a fully Bayesian regularization scheme to estimate functional graphical models. We consider a direct Bayesian analog of the functional graphical lasso proposed by Qiao et al. (2019).. We then propose a regularization strategy via the graphical horseshoe. We compare both Bayesian approaches to the frequentist functional graphical lasso, and compare the …
Statistical Methods For Meta-Analysis In Large-Scale Genomic Experiments, Wimarsha Thathsarani Jayanetti
Statistical Methods For Meta-Analysis In Large-Scale Genomic Experiments, Wimarsha Thathsarani Jayanetti
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Recent developments in high throughput genomic assays have opened up the possibility of testing hundreds and thousands of genes simultaneously. With the availability of vast amounts of public databases, researchers tend to combine genomic analysis results from multiple studies in the form of a meta-analysis. Meta-analysis methods can be broadly classified into two main categories. The first approach is to combine the statistical significance (pvalues) of the genes from each individual study, and the second approach is to combine the statistical estimates (effect sizes) from the individual studies. In this dissertation, we will discuss how adherence to the standard null …
Dynamic Prediction For Alternating Recurrent Events Using A Semiparametric Joint Frailty Model, Jaehyeon Yun
Dynamic Prediction For Alternating Recurrent Events Using A Semiparametric Joint Frailty Model, Jaehyeon Yun
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Alternating recurrent events data arise commonly in health research; examples include hospital admissions and discharges of diabetes patients; exacerbations and remissions of chronic bronchitis; and quitting and restarting smoking. Recent work has involved formulating and estimating joint models for the recurrent event times considering non-negligible event durations. However, prediction models for transition between recurrent events are lacking. We consider the development and evaluation of methods for predicting future events within these models. Specifically, we propose a tool for dynamically predicting transition between alternating recurrent events in real time. Under a flexible joint frailty model, we derive the predictive probability of …
Advanced High Dimensional Regression Techniques, Yuan Yang
Advanced High Dimensional Regression Techniques, Yuan Yang
All Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on developing high dimensional regression techniques to analyze large scale data using both Bayesian and frequentist approaches, motivated by data sets from various disciplines, such as public health and genetics. More specifically, Chapters 2 and Chapter 4 take a Bayesian approach to achieve modeling and parameter estimation simultaneously while Chapter 3 takes a frequentist approach. The main aspects of these techniques are that they perform variable selection and parameter estimation simultaneously, while also being easily adaptable to large-scale data. In particular, by embedding a logistic model into traditional spike and slab framework and selecting of proper prior …
Adjusting Community Survey Data Benchmarks For External Factors, Allen Miller, Nicole M. Norelli, Robert Slater, Mingyang N. Yu
Adjusting Community Survey Data Benchmarks For External Factors, Allen Miller, Nicole M. Norelli, Robert Slater, Mingyang N. Yu
SMU Data Science Review
Abstract. Using U.S. resident survey data from the National Community Survey in combination with public data from the U.S. Census and additional sources, a Voting Regressor Model was developed to establish fair benchmark values for city performance. These benchmarks were adjusted for characteristics the city cannot easily influence that contribute to confidence in local government, such as population size, demographics, and income. This adjustment allows for a more meaningful comparison and interpretation of survey results among individual cities. Methods explored for the benchmark adjustment included cluster analysis, anomaly detection, and a variety of regression techniques, including random forest, ridge, decision …
Statistical Modeling Of Longitudinal Medical Cost Data, Shikun Wang
Statistical Modeling Of Longitudinal Medical Cost Data, Shikun Wang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Projecting the future cancer care cost is critical in health economics research and policy making. An indispensable step is to estimate cost trajectories from an incident cohort of cancer patients using longitudinal medical cost data, accounting for terminal events such as death, and right censoring due to loss of follow-up. Since the cost of cancer care and survival are correlated, a scientifically meaningful quantity for inference in this context is the mean cost trajectory conditional on survival. Many standard approaches for longitudinal and survival analysis are not valid for the problem. The research for my Ph.D. dissertation consists of three …
Effect Of Monetary Policy Rate On Market Interest Rates In Nigeria: A Threshold And Nardl Approach, Oluwafemi E. Awopegba, Joseph O. Afolabi, Lydia T. Adeoye, Godwin O. Akpokodje
Effect Of Monetary Policy Rate On Market Interest Rates In Nigeria: A Threshold And Nardl Approach, Oluwafemi E. Awopegba, Joseph O. Afolabi, Lydia T. Adeoye, Godwin O. Akpokodje
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study examines the effect of monetary policy rate (MPR) on market interest rates in Nigeria. For parsimony, we develop two indexes called the short-term interest rate (SINT) and Lending interest rate (LINT) to represent deposit and lending rates respectively. The nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) and threshold regression models are adopted. The study uses monthly data from 2002:M1 to 2019:M12. The results of the threshold regression model indicate that the degree of the effect of MPR on SINT and LINT above the estimated threshold of 11 and 13 percent respectively is greater and significant than if MPR were to …

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study investigates the implication of the social dimension of inclusive growth on poverty reduction in Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries. It specifically examines how social indices of inclusive growth comprising of income inequality, education, and health outcomes affect poverty reduction. The study uses a panel dataset of the six (6) lower-middle income countries in ECOWAS which was analysed via panel Difference Generalised Method of Moment (D-GMM). The results show that GDP per capita exerts significant negative effect on poverty while inequality, education and health outcomes do not show significant effect on poverty. Although, the estimates of …

This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sectoral stock prices in Nigeria stock market using daily data covering from February 28, 2020 to June 26, 2020. Applying the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds test, the study finds that COVID-19 pandemic had adverse impact on the stock market indices in the short run. Furthermore, the study documents negative response of sectoral stock prices to the pandemic while the stock prices of the banking sub-sector are the worst hit. Compared to the consumer goods, and industrial subsector indices, the speed of adjustment to long run equilibrium is faster for …
Attempting To Predict The Unpredictable: March Madness, Coleton Kanzmeier
Attempting To Predict The Unpredictable: March Madness, Coleton Kanzmeier
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Each year, millions upon millions of individuals fill out at least one if not hundreds of March Madness brackets. People test their luck every year, whether for fun, with friends or family, or to even win some money. Some people rely on their basketball knowledge whereas others know it is called March Madness for a reason and take a shot in the dark. Others have even tried using statistics to give them an edge. I intend to follow a similar approach, using statistics to my advantage. The end goal is to predict this year’s, 2022, March Madness bracket. To achieve …
