Improvements On Segment Based Contours Method For Dna Microarray Image Segmentation, Yang Li
Improvements On Segment Based Contours Method For Dna Microarray Image Segmentation, Yang Li
Doctoral Dissertations
DNA microarray is an efficient biotechnology tool for scientists to measure the expression levels of large numbers of genes, simultaneously. To obtain the gene expression, microarray image analysis needs to be conducted. Microarray image segmentation is a fundamental step in the microarray analysis process. Segmentation gives the intensities of each probe spot in the array image, and those intensities are used to calculate the gene expression in subsequent analysis procedures. Therefore, more accurate and efficient microarray image segmentation methods are being pursued all the time.
In this dissertation, we are making efforts to obtain more accurate image segmentation results. We …
New Statistical Methods For Analysis Of Historical Data From Wildlife Populations, Trevor Hefley
New Statistical Methods For Analysis Of Historical Data From Wildlife Populations, Trevor Hefley
Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wildlife biologists, many times with the help of ordinary citizens, have developed and maintained long-term datasets for monitoring the status of wildlife populations. These datasets can range from a collection of citizen-reported sightings of a rare species, to datasets collected by biologists using standardized methods. The commonality is that these datasets span a temporal and spatial scale that is beyond the scope of most scientific studies. Ensuring the continued persistence of wildlife populations requires predictions of the impact of human actions. Regardless if the predictions are quantitative or qualitative, the best we can do is use the past data to …

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
We provide conceptual introductions to missingness mechanisms—missing completely at random (MCAR), missing at random (MAR), and missing not at random (MNAR)—and state-of-the-art methods of handling missing data—full-information maximum likelihood (FIML) and multiple imputation (MI)—followed by a discussion of planned missing designs: multiform questionnaire protocols, two-method measurement models, and wave-missing longitudinal designs. We reviewed 80 articles of empirical studies published in the 2012 issues of the Journal of Pediatric Psychology to present a picture of how adequately missing data are currently handled in this field. To illustrate the benefits of utilizing MI or FIML and incorporating planned missingness into study designs, …

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
Utilizing planned missing data (PMD) designs (ex. 3-form surveys) enables researchers to ask participants fewer questions during the data collection process. An important question, however, is just how few participants are needed to effectively employ planned missing data designs in research studies. This paper explores this question by using simulated three-form planned missing data to assess analytic model convergence, parameter estimate bias, standard error bias, mean squared error (MSE), and relative efficiency (RE).Three models were examined: a one-time point, cross-sectional model with 3 constructs; a two-time point model with 3 constructs at each time point; and a three-time point, mediation …

The Initial Phases Of A Consistent Pricing System That Reflects The Online Sale Value Of A Horse, Curran A. Prettyman
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Horses are one of the most uniquely priced commodities. This document provides a solution to an industry-wide weakness of inconsistent pricing and confusion. In the following report, an evaluation of the industry flaw is presented, an econometric approach is described in full, and a solution is proposed using insight gained from a regression analysis. This report uses an econometric approach to determine the impact of hunter jumper horse qualities on internet sale prices. Data is compiled from bigeq.com for seventy-eight horses in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. A linear regression analysis for twelve variables establishes that …
Fusarium Head Blight Resistance And Agronomic Performance In Soft Red Winter Wheat Populations, Daniela Sarti Dvorjak
Fusarium Head Blight Resistance And Agronomic Performance In Soft Red Winter Wheat Populations, Daniela Sarti Dvorjak
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Fusarium head blight (FHB), caused by Fusarium graminearum Schwabe [telomorph: Gibberella zeae Schwein.(Petch)], is recognized as one of the most destructive diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. and T. durum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) worldwide. Breeding for FHB resistance must be accompanied by selection for desirable agronomic traits. Donor parents with two FHB resistance quantitative trait loci (QTL) Fhb1 (chromosome 3BS) and QFhs.nau-2DL (chromosome 2DL) were crossed to four adapted SRW wheat lines to generate backcross and forward cross progeny. F2 individuals were genotyped and assigned to 4 different groups according to presence/ absence of …
Assessment Of Tillage Practices Using Landsat-Tm 5 In Nebraska., Sonisa Sharma
Assessment Of Tillage Practices Using Landsat-Tm 5 In Nebraska., Sonisa Sharma
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Tillage management practices are an important component to crop production and to federal and state conservation efforts and crop subsidy programs. Crop residue created by conservation tillage reduces soil erosion and reduce evaporation from exposed soil. Agro-hydrological models require information on tillage practices to estimate their impacts on soil-water-holding capacity, total evapotranspiration, carbon sequestration, water runoff and water and wind erosion for agricultural lands. Classification of tillage practices using remote sensing offers promise for the rapid collection of tillage information on individual fields over large areas. Using satellite imagery proves to be challenging due to the similarity in spectral signatures …

A Statistical Model To Determine Multiple Binding Sites Of A Transcription Factor On Dna Using Chip-Seq Data, Rasika Jayatillake
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Protein-DNA interaction is vital to many biological processes in cells such as cell division, embryo development and regulating gene expression. Chromatin Immunoprecipitation followed by massively parallel sequencing (ChIP-seq) is a new technology that can reveal protein binding sites in genome with superior accuracy. Although many methods have been proposed to find binding sites for ChIP-seq data, they can find only one binding site within a short region of the genome. In this study we introduce a statistical model to identify multiple binding sites of a transcription factor within a short region of the genome using the ChIP-seq data. Mapped sequence …

Recently the Justice department has started investigations into alleged anti-trust violations by Monsanto. This has helped fuel a lot of already hyped discontent with one of the world’s leaders in innovative solutions for sustainable agriculture. This article discusses how the regulatory environment could possibly have contributed to more concentration and power in the biotech industry. Increasing regulation would likely have the opposite effect of creating a level playing field in the agriculture industry. The composition of my senior project can be broken down into two parts. The first part of my project, without which the second could not be pursued, involved a 13 week internship at a produce processing facility where I took part in several projects varying in scope and type. The second part was to acquire certification as a Quality Process Analyst from the American Society for Quality.
This document is structured to represent the dichotomous nature of my project; the first section is dedicated to my internship experience, and the second dedicated to the certification examination preparation and completion.

Statistical Approach To The Characterization And Recognition Of Human Gaits, Derrick M. Chelliah
Statistical Approach To The Characterization And Recognition Of Human Gaits, Derrick M. Chelliah
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the final portion of a complete process for human gait recognition. The thesis takes as input information that has been generated from videotaping walking individuals and converting their gaits into numerical data that measures the locations of various points on the body through time. Beginning with this data, this thesis uses a variety of mathematical and statistical methods to create identifying signatures for each individual and identify them on the basis of that signature. The end goal is to achieve under controlled laboratory conditions human gait recognition, an identification method which does not require contact or cooperation …

A Robust Measure Of Correlation Between Two Genes On A Microarray, Johanna S. Hardin, Aya Mitani '06, Leanne Hicks, Brian Vankoten
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
Background
The underlying goal of microarray experiments is to identify gene expression patterns across different experimental conditions. Genes that are contained in a particular pathway or that respond similarly to experimental conditions could be co-expressed and show similar patterns of expression on a microarray. Using any of a variety of clustering methods or gene network analyses we can partition genes of interest into groups, clusters, or modules based on measures of similarity. Typically, Pearson correlation is used to measure distance (or similarity) before implementing a clustering algorithm. Pearson correlation is quite susceptible to outliers, however, an unfortunate characteristic when dealing …
Statistical Approach To Background Subtraction For Production Of High-Quality Silhouettes For Human Gait Recognition, Jennifer J. Samler
Statistical Approach To Background Subtraction For Production Of High-Quality Silhouettes For Human Gait Recognition, Jennifer J. Samler
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis uses a background subtraction to produce high-quality silhouettes for use in human identification by human gait recognition, an identification method which does not require contact with an individual and which can be done from a distance. A statistical method which reduces the noise level is employed resulting in cleaner silhouettes which facilitate identification. The thesis starts with gathering video data of individuals walking normally across a background scene. From there the video is converted into a sequence of images that are stored as joint photographic experts group (jpeg) files. The background is subtracted from each image using a …

Linear regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are two of the most widely used statistical techniques in ecology. Regression quantitatively describes the relationship between a response variable and one or more continuous independent variables, while ANOVA determines whether a response variable differs among discrete values of the independent variable(s). Designing experiments with discrete factors is straightforward because ANOVA is the only option, but what is the best way to design experiments involving continuous factors? Should ecologists prefer experiments with few treatments and many replicates analyzed with ANOVA, or experiments with many treatments and few replicates per treatment analyzed with regression? …

Mark-Recapture Creel Survey And Survival Models, Shampa Saha
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, we consider a model based approach to the estimation of exploitation rate of a fish population by combining mark-recapture procedures with a creel survey. We also consider the analysis of a proportional hazards survival model for randomly censored observations, known as the Koziol-Green model. The model assumes that the lifetime survivor function is a power of the censored time survivor function.
In Chapter 2, we introduce the model based approach to the estimation of the exploitation rate of a fish population by combining mark-recapture procedures with a creel survey. We assume that in the beginning of a …
Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza
Effects Of Cocaine, Nicotine And Diet On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Zaida Raquel Cordero Loayza
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The consumption of alcohol is a problem not only in this country (U.S.), but also in many other places in the world. Thus we find the Indians in Peru, Bolivia and other neighboring countries (Ecuador and northern part of Argentina) consuming alcohol to the point that they become alcoholics, in addition to this they also chew coca leaves, plant from which cocaine is extracted.
In an effort to establish the cause for this behavior, we put Sprague-Dawley albino rats on either a poor or good basal diet. Once every other day the rats were injected with a solution of cocaine. …
Grain Moisture And The Weather : What Can The Records Tell Us?, M W. Perry, P. A. Fievez
Grain Moisture And The Weather : What Can The Records Tell Us?, M W. Perry, P. A. Fievez
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The expansion of cereal production in areas along the south coast has exposed harvesting problems associated with high grain moisture.
A grain delivery standard of 12 per cent moisture means that, in the absence of grain drying facilities, harvesting times in the field are restricted to those hours when grain moisture falls below this figure.
Grain moisture, however, remains the major problem and for planning purposes, producers require an estimate of the harvesting time available in a given year. This will depend on all the climatic variables which affect grain moisture. These include rainfall and dew which deposit water directly …
