Structural Analysis Of The Multifunctional Spoiie Regulatory Protein Of Clostridioides Difficile., Blythe Emily Bunkers Jul 2020

Structural Analysis Of The Multifunctional Spoiie Regulatory Protein Of Clostridioides Difficile., Blythe Emily Bunkers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clostridioides (formally Clostridium) difficile is a medically relevant pathogen pertinent to infectious disease research. C. difficile is distinctly known for its ability to produce two toxins, enterotoxin A and cytotoxin B, and the propensity to colonize the mammalian gastrointestinal tract. It is known that metabolism is tightly correlated with sporulation in endospore producers such as C. difficile, but an interesting and novel regulatory relationship found by the Ivey lab has yet to be understood. The relationship explored in this study is observed between the sporulation factor, SpoIIE, which represses expression of an ABC peptide transporter, app. In this study, two …

Measuring Sexual Excitation And Sexual Inhibition In A Dutch-Speaking Sample, Malachi Willis Jul 2020

Measuring Sexual Excitation And Sexual Inhibition In A Dutch-Speaking Sample, Malachi Willis

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: Individual differences in sexual excitation and sexual inhibition are important predictors of sexual functioning. Psychometric instruments for these aspects of sexual response were originally developed separately for men (Sexual Inhibition /Sexual Excitation Scales [SIS/SES]) and women (Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women [SESII-W]). These measures were then adapted to function similarly in samples comprising both men and women (Sexual Inhibition/Sexual Excitation Scales-Short Form [SIS/SES-SF] and Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women and Men [SESII-W/M], respectively). No published study to our knowledge has administered the SIS/SES and SESII-W/M questionnaires to a sample of both women and men. In the present …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As students progress in their university programs, they have to face many course choices. It is important for them to receive guidance based on not only their interest, but also the "predicted" course performance so as to improve learning experience and optimise academic performance. In this paper, we propose the next-term grade prediction task as a useful course selection guidance. We propose a machine learning framework to predict course grades in a specific program term using the historical student-course data. In this framework, we develop the prediction model using Factorization Machine (FM) and Long Short Term Memory combined with FM …

Combining Machine Learning And Empirical Engineering Methods Towards Improving Oil Production Forecasting, Andrew J. Allen Jul 2020

Combining Machine Learning And Empirical Engineering Methods Towards Improving Oil Production Forecasting, Andrew J. Allen

Master's Theses

Current methods of production forecasting such as decline curve analysis (DCA) or numerical simulation require years of historical production data, and their accuracy is limited by the choice of model parameters. Unconventional resources have proven challenging to apply traditional methods of production forecasting because they lack long production histories and have extremely variable model parameters. This research proposes a data-driven alternative to reservoir simulation and production forecasting techniques. We create a proxy-well model for predicting cumulative oil production by selecting statistically significant well completion parameters and reservoir information as independent predictor variables in regression-based models. Then, principal component analysis (PCA) …

During the yellow fever epidemic in Angola in 2016, cases of yellow fever were reported in China for the first time. The 11 cases, all Chinese nationals returning from Angola, were identified in March and April 2016, one to two weeks after the peak of the Angolan epidemic. One patient died; the other 10 cases recovered after treatment. This paper reviews the epidemiological characteristics of the 11 yellow fever cases imported into China. It examines case detection and disease control and surveillance, and presents recommendations for further action to prevent additional importation of yellow fever into China.

Dysregulation of polyamine metabolism has been linked to the development of colorectal cancer (CRC), but the underlying mechanism is incompletely characterized. Here, we report that spermine synthase (SMS), a polyamine biosynthetic enzyme, is overexpressed in CRC. Targeted disruption of SMS in CRC cells results in spermidine accumulation, which inhibits FOXO3a acetylation and allows subsequent translocation to the nucleus to transcriptionally induce expression of the proapoptotic protein Bim. However, this induction is blunted by MYC-driven expression of miR-19a and miR-19b that repress Bim production. Pharmacological or genetic inhibition of MYC activity in SMS-depleted CRC cells dramatically induces Bim expression and apoptosis …

Bayesian Reliability Analysis For Optical Media Using Accelerated Degradation Test Data, Kun Bu Jun 2020

Bayesian Reliability Analysis For Optical Media Using Accelerated Degradation Test Data, Kun Bu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) 10995:2011 is the inter-national standard providing guidelines for assessing the reliability and service life of optical media, which is designed to be highly reliable and possesses a long lifetime. A well-known challenge of reliability analysis for highly reliable devices is that it is hard to obtain sufficient failure data under their normal use conditions. Accelerated degradation tests (ADTs) are commonly used to quickly obtain physical degradation data under elevated stress conditions, which are then extrapolated to predict reliability under the normal use condition. This standard achieves the estimation of the lifetime of recordable media, …

Constitutive Model Of Lateral Unloading Creep Of Soft Soil Under Excess Pore Water Pressure, Wei Huang, Kejun Wen, Xiaojia Deng, Junjie Li, Zhijian Jiang, Yang Li, Lin Li, Farshad Amini

Civil and Architectural Engineering Faculty Research

Presented in this paper is a study on the lateral unloading creep tests under different excess pore water pressures. The marine sedimentary soft soil in Shenzhen, China, was selected in this study. The results show that the excess pore water pressure plays a significant role in enhancing the unloading creep of soft soil. Higher excess pore water pressure brings more obvious creep deformation of soft soil and lower ultimate failure load. Meanwhile, the viscoelastic and the viscoplastic modulus of soft soil were found to exponentially decline with creep time. A modified merchant model and a combined model of the modified …

Vanishing Porosity Limit Of The Coupled Stokes-Brinkman System, Mingwen Fei, Dongjuan Niu, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the small porosity asymptotic behavior of the coupled Stokes-Brinkman system in the presence of a curved interface between the Stokes region and the Brinkman region. in particular, we derive a set of approximate solutions, validated via rigorous analysis, to the coupled Stokes-Brinkman system. of particular interest is that the approximate solution satisfies a generalized Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface condition (1.9) with the constant of proportionality independent of the curvature of the interface.

Handling Missing Data For Unsupervised Learning With An Application On A Fitbir Traumatic Brain Injury (Tbi) Dataset, Louis Steinmeister, Dacosta Yeboah, Gayla Olbricht, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi, Bassam Hadi, Daniel Hier, Donald C. Wunsch

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

"The problem of missing data and imputation have been widely discussed amongst specialists. However, many data scientists and applied statisticians fail to appropriately consider this issue. Often, it seems intuitive to discard observations containing missing data or simply to substitute means. This can lead to disastrous consequences, particularly in an era of exponentially increasing data volumes. In the following, we show how inappropriate handling of missing data and an insufficient analysis of the censoring mechanism can lead to a bias, overconfidence in the estimation of parameters, could challenge the reproducibility of obtained results, and may distort the structure of the …

Chemostratigraphy Of Carbonate Gravity Flows Of The Wolfcamp Formation In Crockett County, Midland Basin, Texas, Alex Blizzard, Julie Bloxson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sediment gravity flows into deep-water environments are important stratigraphic traps in lithologically diverse reservoirs generating multiple plays for hydrocarbon exploration. These highly heterogeneous deposits can be studied by utilizing chemostratigraphy and higher-order sequence stratigraphy; being an accurate method for reservoir characterization. Studying these gravity flows along a carbonate platform’s slope can further expand an understanding of the stratigraphy that is filling adjacent basins. The application of elemental analyses can support in identifying mineralogy that impact reservoir quality, especially when conventional testing cannot be applied.

This study utilizes five cores containing the Wolfcamp Formation from the southeastern slope of the Central …

Comparing Means Under Heteroscedasticity And Nonnormality: Further Exploring Robust Means Modeling, Alyssa Counsell, Robert Philip Chalmers, Robert A. Cribbie

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Comparing the means of independent groups is a concern when the assumptions of normality and variance homogeneity are violated. Robust means modeling (RMM) was proposed as an alternative to ANOVA-type procedures when the assumptions of normality and variance homogeneity are violated. The purpose of this study is to compare the Type I error and power rates of RMM to the trimmed Welch procedure. A Monte Carlo study was used to investigate RMM and the trimmed Welch procedure under several conditions of nonnormality and variance heterogeneity. The results suggest that the trimmed Welch provides a better balance of Type I error …

A Note On Inferences About The Probability Of Success, Rand Wilcox Jun 2020

A Note On Inferences About The Probability Of Success, Rand Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

There is an extensive literature dealing with inferences about the probability of success. A minor goal in this note is to point out when certain recommended methods can be unsatisfactory when the sample size is small. The main goal is to report results on the two-sample case. Extant results suggest using one of four methods. The results indicate when computing a 0.95 confidence interval, two of these methods can be more satisfactory when dealing with small sample sizes.

Inferences About The Probability Of Success, Given The Value Of A Covariate, Using A Nonparametric Smoother, Rand Wilcox Jun 2020

Inferences About The Probability Of Success, Given The Value Of A Covariate, Using A Nonparametric Smoother, Rand Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

For a binary random variable Y, let p(x) = P(Y = 1 | X = x) for some covariate X. The goal of computing a confidence interval for p(x) is considered. In the logistic regression model, even a slight departure difficult to detect via a goodness-of-fit test can yield inaccurate results. The accuracy of a confidence interval can deteriorate as the sample size increases. The goal is to suggest an alternative approach based on a smoother, which provides a more flexible approximation of p(x).

Dividend Maximization Under A Set Ruin Probability Target In The Presence Of Proportional And Excess-Of-Loss Reinsurance, Christian Kasumo, Juma Kasozi, Dmitry Kuznetsov

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We study dividend maximization with set ruin probability targets for an insurance company whose surplus is modelled by a diffusion perturbed classical risk process. The company is permitted to enter into proportional or excess-of-loss reinsurance arrangements. By applying stochastic control theory, we derive Volterra integral equations and solve numerically using block-by-block methods. In each of the models, we have established the optimal barrier to use for paying dividends provided the ruin probability does not exceed a predetermined target. Numerical examples involving the use of both light- and heavy-tailed distributions are given. The results show that ruin probability targets result in …

Performance Analysis Of An M/M/1 Queue With N-Policy Interrupted Closedown Preventive Maintenance Balking And Feedback, A. Azhagappan, T. Deepa

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper investigates the transient and stationary behavior of a M/M/1 queueing model with N-policy, interrupted closedown, balking, feedback and preventive maintenance. The server stays dormant (off state) until N customers accumulate in the queue and then starts an exhaustive service (on state). After the service, each customer may either leave the system or get immediate feedback. When the system becomes empty, the server resumes closedown. If any arrival occurs before the completion of closedown time, the closedown work of the server is interrupted and starts the busy period in an exhaustive manner. If no arrival occurs during the …

At The Interface Of Algebra And Statistics, Tai-Danae Bradley

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis takes inspiration from quantum physics to investigate mathematical structure that lies at the interface of algebra and statistics. The starting point is a passage from classical probability theory to quantum probability theory. The quantum version of a probability distribution is a density operator, the quantum version of marginalizing is an operation called the partial trace, and the quantum version of a marginal probability distribution is a reduced density operator. Every joint probability distribution on a finite set can be modeled as a rank one density operator. By applying the partial trace, we obtain reduced density operators whose diagonals …

Inventory Models For Deteriorating Items With Power Pattern Demand Rate, Olalekan Adaraniwon Amos Jun 2020

Inventory Models For Deteriorating Items With Power Pattern Demand Rate, Olalekan Adaraniwon Amos

Student Works (2020-2029)

Inventory management has become a prevalent topic in the field of operational research over some decades now. It cuts across many areas like management sciences, statistics and engineering. However, research focusing on inventory model with power demand pattern is quite limited. Demand patterns are defined as different ways by which products are removed out of inventory to supply customers demand during the schedule period. Power demand pattern permits suiting the demand to a more practical situation. In this research, four deterministic inventory model for deteriorating items with power demand pattern has been developed. We considered in the first models an …

Statistical Properties And Applications Of Press Statistic, Ida Marie Alcantara Jun 2020

Statistical Properties And Applications Of Press Statistic, Ida Marie Alcantara

Dissertations

The most popularly used statistic R2 has a fundamental weakness in model building: it favors adding more predictors to the model because R2 can only increase. In effect, the additional predictors start fitting the noise in data. Other criterion in selecting a regression model such as R2 adj , AIC, SBC, and Mallow’s Cp does not guarantee the model selected will also make better prediction of future values. To avoid this, data scientists withhold a percentage of the data for validation purposes. The PRESS statistic does something similar by withholding each observation in calculating its own …

The Weighted Exponentiated Family Of Distributions: Properties, Applications And Characterizations, Zubair Ahmad, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Mohammed Elgarhy

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper a new method of introducing an additional parameter to a continuous distribution is proposed, which leads to a new class of distributions, called the weighted exponentiated family. A special sub-model is discussed. General expressions for some of the mathematical properties of this class such as the moments, quantile function, generating function and order statistics are derived; and certain characterizations are also discussed. To estimate the model parameters, the method of maximum likelihood is applied. A simulation study is carried out to assess the finite sample behavior of the maximum likelihood estimators. Finally, the usefulness of the proposed …

The Weibull Topp-Leone Generated Family Of Distributions: Statistical Properties And Applications, Hamid Karamikabir, Mahmoud Afshari, Haitham M. Yousof, Morad Alizadeh, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

Statistical distributions are very useful in describing and predicting real world phenomena. Consequently, the choice of the most suitable statistical distribution for modeling given data is very important. In this paper, we propose a new class of lifetime distributions called the Weibull Topp-Leone Generated (WTLG) family. The proposed family is constructed via compounding the Weibull and the Topp-Leone distributions. It can provide better fits and is very flexible in comparison with the various known lifetime distributions. Several general statistical properties of the WTLG family are studied in details including density and hazard shapes, limit behavior, mixture representation, skewness and kurtosis, …
