Empirical Comparison Of Tests For One-Factor Anova Under Heterogeneity And Non-Normality: A Monte Carlo Study, Diep Nguyen, Eunsook Kim, Yan Wang, Thanh Vinh Pham, Yi-Hsin Chen, Jeffrey D. Kromrey

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Although the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) F test is one of the most popular statistical tools to compare group means, it is sensitive to violations of the homogeneity of variance (HOV) assumption. This simulation study examines the performance of thirteen tests in one-factor ANOVA models in terms of their Type I error rate and statistical power under numerous (82,080) conditions. The results show that when HOV was satisfied, the ANOVA F or the Brown-Forsythe test outperformed the other methods in terms of both Type I error control and statistical power even under non-normality. When HOV was violated, the Structured Means …

Methods Of Uncertainty Quantification For Physical Parameters, Kellin Rumsey Jul 2020

Methods Of Uncertainty Quantification For Physical Parameters, Kellin Rumsey

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) is an umbrella term referring to a broad class of methods which typically involve the combination of computational modeling, experimental data and expert knowledge to study a physical system. A parameter, in the usual statistical sense, is said to be physical if it has a meaningful interpretation with respect to the physical system. Physical parameters can be viewed as inherent properties of a physical process and have a corresponding true value. Statistical inference for physical parameters is a challenging problem in UQ due to the inadequacy of the computer model. In this thesis, we provide a comprehensive …

Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Species Trees And Anomaly Zone Detection Using Ranked Gene Trees, Anastasiia Kim Jul 2020

Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Species Trees And Anomaly Zone Detection Using Ranked Gene Trees, Anastasiia Kim

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

A phylogenetic tree represents the evolutionary relationships among a set of organisms. Gene trees can be used to reconstruct phylogenetic trees. The methods in this dissertation focus on the gene tree topologies with emphasis on ranked gene tree topologies. A ranked tree depicts the order in which nodes appear in the tree together with topological relationships among gene lineages. One challenge that arises during phylogenetic inference is the existence of the anomaly zones, the regions of branch-length space in the species tree that can produce gene trees that have topologies differing from the species tree topology but are more probable …

Assessing The Validity Of Sentiment Analysis Measures Through Polychoric Correlation, Kelli N. Kasper Jul 2020

Assessing The Validity Of Sentiment Analysis Measures Through Polychoric Correlation, Kelli N. Kasper

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Sentiment analysis methods extract the attitude of a text via systematic algorithms. To evaluate the validity of common sentiment analysis methods, we use polychoric correlation to compare computer-mediated methods and human-rated analogues. Our main topics of interest are the internal consistency of the raters' scores, the level of consensus among raters, and how well raters' scores correlate with those given by sentiment analysis methods for randomly collected Twitter data.

Our analysis found that there is good validity for methods that measure negative and positive sentiments in short texts, both in terms of inter-rater consistency and when comparing raters to computer-mediated …

Epidemiology Of Cancers In Men Who Have Sex With Men (Msm): A Protocol For Umbrella Review Of Systematic Reviews, Manoj Kumar Honaryar, Yelena Tarasenko, Maribel Almonte, Vitaly Smelov

Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

While earlier studies on men having sex with men (MSM) tended to examine infection-related cancers, an increasing number of studies have been focusing on effects of sexual orientation on other cancers and social and cultural causes for cancer disparities. As a type of tertiary research, this umbrella review (UR) aims to synthesize findings from existing review studies on the effects of sexual orientation on cancer. Relevant peer-reviewed systematic reviews (SRs) will be identified without date or language restrictions using MEDLINE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the International Prospective Register for Systematic Reviews, among others. The research team members will …

An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Faye Liesman Jul 2020

An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Faye Liesman

Theses and Dissertations

Genes are segments of DNA that provide a blueprint for cells and organisms to effectively control processes and regulations within individuals. There have been many attempts to quantify these processes, as a greater understanding of how genes operate could have large impacts on both personalized and precision medicine. Gene interactions are of particular interest, however, current biological methods can not easily reveal the details of these interactions. Therefore, we infer networks of interactions from gene expression data which we call a gene regulatory network, or GRN. Due to the robust behavior of genes and the inherent variability within interactions, models …

An Improved Method For Spectroscopic Quality Classification, Elizabeth G. Mayer Jul 2020

An Improved Method For Spectroscopic Quality Classification, Elizabeth G. Mayer

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Spectral quality classification is a vital step in data cleaning before the

analysis of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) data can be done. This

analysis compares five methods of quality classification; three of these are

legacy methods, Maudsley et al. (2006), Zhang et al. (2018), and

Bustillo et al. (2020), and two newly created methods that used a random forests

classifier (RFC) to inform their classifications. We found that the random forest

classifier was the most accurate at predicting spectra quality (balanced

accuracy for RF of 88% vs legacy of 70%, 72%, or 72%). A

Random-Forests-Informed Filtering method (RFIFM) for quality …

A Study Of The Efficacy Of Machine Learning For Diagnosing Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease In Non-Diabetic Patients, Demond Larae Handley Jul 2020

A Study Of The Efficacy Of Machine Learning For Diagnosing Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease In Non-Diabetic Patients, Demond Larae Handley

Theses and Dissertations

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 18.2 million adults age 20 and older have Coronary Artery Disease in the United States. Early diagnosis is therefore of crucial importance to help prevent debilitating consequences, and principally death for many patients. In this study we use data containing gene expression values from peripheral blood samples in 198 non-diabetic patients, with the goal of developing an age and sex gene expression model for diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease. We employ machine learning methods to obtain a classification based on genetic information, age and sex. Our implementation uses feed forward …

Improving The Quality And Design Of Retrospective Clinical Outcome Studies That Utilize Electronic Health Records, Oliwier Dziadkowiec, Jeffery Durbin, Vignesh Jayaraman Muralidharan, Megan Novak, Brendon Cornett

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Electronic health records (EHRs) are an excellent source for secondary data analysis. Studies based on EHR-derived data, if designed properly, can answer previously unanswerable clinical research questions. In this paper we will highlight the benefits of large retrospective studies from secondary sources such as EHRs, examine retrospective cohort and case-control study design challenges, as well as methodological and statistical adjustment that can be made to overcome some of the inherent design limitations, in order to increase the generalizability, validity and reliability of the results obtained from these studies.

Two Pens In A Pocket Must Be Different: A Nerd-Oriented Lesson From Statistics, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2020

Two Pens In A Pocket Must Be Different: A Nerd-Oriented Lesson From Statistics, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Some people always carry a pen with them, so that if an idea comes to mind, they will always be able to write it down. Pens sometimes run out of ink. So, just in case, people carry two pens. The problem is that often, when one carries two identical pens, they seem to run out of ink at about the same time -- which defeats the whole purpose of carrying two pens. In this paper, we provide a simple statistics-based explanation of this phenomenon, and show that a seemingly natural idea of carrying three pens will not help. The only …

Italian Sociologists: A Community Of Disconnected Groups, Aliakbar Akbaritabar, Vincent Traag, Alberto Caimo, Flaminio Squazzoni

Articles

Examining coauthorship networks is key to study scientific collaboration patterns and structural characteristics of scientific communities. Here, we studied coauthorship networks of sociologists in Italy, using temporal and multi-level quantitative analysis. By looking at publications indexed in Scopus, we detected research communities among Italian sociologists. We found that Italian sociologists are fractured in many disconnected groups. The giant connected component of the Italian sociology could be split into five main groups with a mixture of three main disciplinary topics: sociology of culture and communication (present in two groups), economic sociology (present in three groups) and general sociology (present in three …

Assessing Differential Item Functioning In The Perceived Stress Scale, Nana Amma Berko Asamoah Jul 2020

Assessing Differential Item Functioning In The Perceived Stress Scale, Nana Amma Berko Asamoah

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When an item on a test functions differently for subgroups of respondents with respect to an exogenous variable (or covariate) after conditioning on the latent variable of interest, the item is said to exhibit Differential Item Functioning (DIF). The 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS10) is administered to respondents via MTurk to quantify “perceived stress” and identify if items on the scale function differently for specific subgroups defined by age, sex, race, marital status, number of children, employment status and social media usage.

The purpose of this study was to compare traditional DIF detection approaches (Mantel-Haenszel, logistic regression, likelihood ratio test …

Learning Networks With Categorical Data Using Distance Correlation, And A Novel Graph-Based Multivariate Test, Jian Tinker Jul 2020

Learning Networks With Categorical Data Using Distance Correlation, And A Novel Graph-Based Multivariate Test, Jian Tinker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We study the use of distance correlation for statistical inference on categorical data, especially the induction of probability networks. Szekely et al. first defined distance correlation for continuous variables in [42], and Zhang translated the concept into the categorical setting in [57] by defining dCor(X,Y) for categorical variables X = (x1,...,xI) and Y = (y1,...,yJ) where P(X=xi)=[pi]i and P(Y=yi)=[pi]j with the formula [Please open the document]

Part I of the dissertation covers the background we need to understand this formula, and prepares us to analyze the properties and performance of its applications.

Part II then presents the main results of …

The Practical Advantages And Disadvantages Of Laplace Regression As An Alternative To Cox Proportional Hazards Model: A Comparison Via Simulation, Sydney Smith Jul 2020

The Practical Advantages And Disadvantages Of Laplace Regression As An Alternative To Cox Proportional Hazards Model: A Comparison Via Simulation, Sydney Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The Cox proportional hazards model is the most common regression technique for survival analysis. However, the proportional hazards assumption restricts it’s use to a limited group of multiplicative models. Laplace regression is a flexible quantile regression technique for censored observations that is appropriate in a wider variety of applications as compared to the Cox proportional hazards model. Instead of estimating a hazard ratio, Laplace regression which is free from a proportionality assumption, can be used to estimate many adjusted percentiles of survival time allowing for a more complete description of the association of interest. This paper compares the performance of …

The Arabidopsis Transcription Factor Aintegumenta Orchestrates Patterning Genes And Auxin Signaling In The Establishment Of Floral Growth And Form, Beth A. Krizek, Ivory C. Blakley, Yen Yi Ho, Nowlan Freese, Ann E. Loraine

Faculty Publications

Understanding how flowers form is an important problem in plant biology, as human food supply depends on flower and seed production. Flower development also provides an excellent model for understanding how cell division, expansion and differentiation are coordinated during organogenesis. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, floral organogenesis requires AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) and AINTEGUMENTA-LIKE 6 (AIL6)/PLETHORA 3 (PLT3), two members of the Arabidopsis AINTEGUMENTA-LIKE/PLETHORA (AIL/PLT) transcription factor family. Together, ANT and AIL6/PLT3 regulate aspects of floral organogenesis, including floral organ initiation, growth, identity specification and patterning. Previously, we used RNA-Seq to identify thousands of genes with disrupted expression in ant ail6 …

Network-Based Statistical Analysis Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data From Aphasia Patients, Xingpei Zhao Jul 2020

Network-Based Statistical Analysis Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data From Aphasia Patients, Xingpei Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a neuroimaging technique that provides insight into brain function and activity. Network models of fMRI signals can reveal functional connectivity related to certain brain disorders, such as post-stroke aphasia. This thesis aims to identify the functional connections that distinguish anomic and Broca’s aphasia by comparing the resting-state fMRI from the patients with these two types of aphasia. The network-based statistic (NBS) approach is used to detect such connections. After the analytic pipeline is applied to the fMRI data, the NBS approach identifies a distinct subnetwork between the two types of aphasia, which involves the …

Bayesian Zero-Inflated Model For Ordinal Data, Huizhong Yang Jul 2020

Bayesian Zero-Inflated Model For Ordinal Data, Huizhong Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Datasets with a relatively large number of zeros is commonly seen in medical applications. Although models like Zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) model are proposed for counts data, there is still some issues with ordinal data which have excess zeros. In this paper, we developed a Bayesian approach to accommodate the excess zero in ordinal data. Intellectual disability (ID), also known as mental retardation (MR), is a disability characterized by below-average intelligence or mental ability and a lack of the learning necessary skills for daily life. A person with intellectual disability has intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviors limitations. Intellectual disability is a …

High-Dimensional Inference Based On The Leave-One-Covariate-Out Regularization Path, Xiangyang Cao Jul 2020

High-Dimensional Inference Based On The Leave-One-Covariate-Out Regularization Path, Xiangyang Cao

Theses and Dissertations

The increasingly rapid emergence of high dimensional data, where the number of variables p may be larger than the sample size n, has necessitated the development of new statistical methodologies. LASSO and variants of LASSO are proposed and have been the most popular estimators for the high dimensional regression models. However, not much work has focused on analyzing and summarizing the information contained in the entire solution path of the LASSO. This dissertation consists of three research projects that propose and extend the Leave-One-Covariate-Out(LOCO) solution path statistic to regression and graphical models.

In the first chapter, we propose a new …

Semiparametric Regression Analysis Of Survival Data And Panel Count Data, Lu Wang Jul 2020

Semiparametric Regression Analysis Of Survival Data And Panel Count Data, Lu Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Both censored survival data and panel count data arise commonly in real-life studies in many fields such as epidemiology, social science, and medical research. In these studies, subjects are usually examined multiple times at periodical or irregular follow-up examinations. Censored data are studied when the exact failure times of the events are of interest but not all of these exact times are directly observed. Some of the failure times of event of interest are only known to fall within some intervals formed by the observation times. Panel count data are under investigation when the exact times of the recurrent events …

In this data‐rich era, it is essential to develop advanced techniques to analyze and understand large amounts of data and extract the underlying information in a flexible way. We provide a review study on the state‐of‐the‐art statistical time series models for univariate and multivariate functional data with serial dependence. In particular, we review functional autoregressive (FAR) models and their variations under different scenarios. The models include the classic FAR model under stationarity; the FARX and pFAR model dealing with multiple exogenous functional variables and large‐scale mixed‐type exogenous variables; the vector FAR model and common functional principal component technique to handle …

Effect Of Predictor Dependence On Variable Selection For Linear And Log-Linear Regression, Apu Chandra Das Jul 2020

Effect Of Predictor Dependence On Variable Selection For Linear And Log-Linear Regression, Apu Chandra Das

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We propose a Bayesian approach to the Dirichlet-Multinomial (DM) regression model, which uses horseshoe, Laplace, and horseshoe plus priors for shrinkage and selection. The Dirichlet-Multinomial model can be used to find the significant association between a set of available covariates and taxa for a microbiome sample. We incorporate the covariates in a log-linear regression framework. We design a simulation study to make a comparison among the performance of the three shrinkage priors in terms of estimation accuracy and the ability to detect true signals. Our results have clearly separated the performance of the three priors and indicated that the horseshoe …

Models For Data Analysis In Accelerated Reliability Growth, Cesar Alexander Ruiz Torres Jul 2020

Models For Data Analysis In Accelerated Reliability Growth, Cesar Alexander Ruiz Torres

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work develops new methodologies for analyzing accelerated testing data in the context of a reliability growth program for a complex multi-component system. Each component has multiple failure modes and the growth program consists of multiple test-fix stages with corrective actions applied at the end of each stage. The first group of methods considers time-to-failure data and test covariates for predicting the final reliability of the system. The time-to-failure of each failure mode is assumed to follow a Weibull distribution with rate parameter proportional to an acceleration factor. Acceleration factors are specific to each failure mode and test covariates. We …
