The Acquisition And Analysis Of Electroencephalogram Data For The Classification Of Benign Partial Epilepsy Of Childhood With Centrotemporal Spikes, Jessica A. Scarborough
Master's Theses
In this thesis, I will expand upon each step in the process of acquiring and analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) for the classification of benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes. Despite huge advancements in the field of health informatics—natural language processing, machine learning, predictive modeling—there are significant barriers to the access of clinical data. These barriers include information blocking, privacy policy concerns, and a lack of stakeholder support. We will see that these roadblocks are all responsible for stunting biomedical research in some way, including my own experiences in acquiring the data for the second chapter of this thesis.
This second chapter …

A Generalized Linear Model For Marital Disruption In Namibia, Lillian Pazvakawambwa
A Generalized Linear Model For Marital Disruption In Namibia, Lillian Pazvakawambwa
Andrews Research Conference
Marital disruption has attracted wide attention among researchers. In recent years, the world has experienced reductions in marriage rates, along with significant increases in cohabiting unions, divorce and separation, leading to rising conjugal and family instability. While some have seen this as a sign of social and moral disruption with a potential to shatter the family institution and the foundations of society itself, others have embraced these trends as signaling increased individual liberty and the loosening of suffocating social mores. There is limited research on the factors influencing marital disruption in Namibia. This paper used the Namibia Demographic and Health …
Can Cone Signals In The Wild Be Predicted From The Past?, David H. Foster, Iván Marín-Franch
Can Cone Signals In The Wild Be Predicted From The Past?, David H. Foster, Iván Marín-Franch
MODVIS Workshop
In the natural world, the past is usually a good guide to the future. If light from the sun and sky is blue earlier in the day and yellow now, then it is likely to be more yellow later, as the sun's elevation decreases. But is the light reflected from a scene into the eye as predictable as the light incident upon the scene, especially when lighting changes are not just spectral but include changes in local shadows and mutual reflections? The aim of this work was to test the predictability of cone photoreceptor signals in the wild over the …

BACKGROUND: Diffusion tensor imaging measures of white matter (WM) microstructural integrity appear to provide earlier indication of WM injury than WM hyperintensities; however, risk factors for poor WM microstructural integrity have not been established. Our study quantifies the association between vascular risk factors in midlife and late life with measures of late-life WM microstructural integrity.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We used data from 1851 participants in ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study) who completed 3-T magnetic resonance imaging, including diffusion tensor imaging, as part of the ARIC Neurocognitive Study (ARIC-NCS). We quantified the association among lipids, glucose, and blood pressure from …

Summary
Statement of the problem
Obesity is both multifactorial and multimodal, making it difficult to identify, unravel and distinguish causative and contributing factors. The lack of a clear model of aetiology hampers the design and evaluation of interventions to prevent and reduce obesity.
Methods
Using modern graph-theoretical algorithms, we are able to coalesce and analyse thousands of inter-dependent variables and interpret their putative relationships to obesity. Our modelling is different from traditional approaches; we make no a priori assumptions about the population, and model instead based on the actual characteristics of a population. Paracliques, noise-resistant collections of highly-correlated variables, are …

A total of 2615 college students between 18 and 25 years old were recruited annually using a series of cross-sectional designs during the spring semester over an 8-year period. Physiologic parameters measured included body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat (%BF), blood serum cholesterol (BSC), and systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure. These measures were compared to data from NHANES to identify differences in physiologic parameters among 18-25 year …
Geospatial And Negative Binomial Regression Analysis Of Culex Nigripalpus, Culex Erraticus, Coquillettidia Perturbans, And Aedes Vexans Counts And Precipitation And Land Use Land Cover Covariates In Polk County, Florida, Joshua P. Wright
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although mosquito monitoring systems in the form of dry-ice bated CDC light traps and sentinel chickens are used by mosquito control personnel in Polk County, Florida, the placement of these are random and do not necessarily reflect prevalent areas of vector mosquito populations. This can result in significant health, economic, and social impacts during disease outbreaks. Of these vector mosquitoes Culex nigripalpus, Culex erraticus, Coquillettidia perturbans, and Aedes vexans are present in Polk County and known to transmit multiple diseases, posing a public health concern. This study seeks to evaluate the effect of Land use Land cover …

Digital Forensics Tool Selection With Multi-Armed Bandit Problem, Umit Karabiyik, Tugba Karabiyik
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Digital forensics investigation is a long and tedious process for an investigator in general. There are many tools that investigators must consider, both proprietary and open source. Forensics investigators must choose the best tool available on the market for their cases to make sure they do not overlook any evidence resides in suspect device within a reasonable time frame. This is however hard decision to make, since learning and testing all available tools make their job only harder. In this project, we define the digital forensics tool selection for a specific investigative task as a multi-armed bandit problem assuming that …

BACKGROUND: The STTR treatment cascade provides a framework for research aimed at improving the delivery of services, care and outcomes of PLWH. The development of effective approaches to increase HIV diagnoses and engage PLWH in subsequent steps of the treatment cascade could lead to earlier and sustained ART treatment resulting in viral suppression. There is an unmet need for research applying the treatment cascade to improve outcomes for those with criminal justice involvement.
METHODS: The Seek, Test, Treat, and Retain (STTR) criminal justice (CJ) cohort combines data from 11 studies across the HIV treatment cascade that focused on persons involved …

Mental illnesses are serious disorders of the brain that have devastating effects on individuals and society. In addition to their disabling and impairing effects, mental illnesses have deep social and economical implications, accounting for an estimated loss of 12 billion working days and a care cost surge to $6 trillion a year by 2030. For diseases such as depression and anxiety, enhancing preventive programs and treatment accessibility, in combination with accurate early diagnosis and personalized treatments, are projected to result in a four-fold return on every dollar invested, a strategy that can drastically help curtail those losses. Notably, within the …

Using Statistical Techniques To Estimate Rooted Species Trees From Unrooted Gene Trees, Ayed Rheal Alanzi
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Methods for inferring species trees from gene trees motivated by incomplete lineage
sorting typically use either rooted gene trees to infer a rooted species tree, or use
unrooted gene trees to infer an unrooted species tree, which is then typically rooted
using one or more outgroups. Theoretically, however, it has been known since 2011
that it is possible to infer the root of the species tree directly from unrooted gene
trees without assuming an outgroup. The present work is the first that we know of
which attempts to infer the root of a species tree using unrooted gene trees as …

Development of a tuberculosis vaccine to boost BCG is a major international health priority. SRL172, an inactivated whole cell booster derived from a non-tuberculous mycobacterium, is the only new vaccine against tuberculosis to have demonstrated efficacy in a Phase 3 trial. In the present study we sought to determine if a three-dose series of DAR-901 manufactured from the SRL172 master cell bank by a new, scalable method was safe and immunogenic.
Cox Processes For Visual Object Counting, Yongming Ma
Cox Processes For Visual Object Counting, Yongming Ma
Student Research Symposium
We present a model that utilizes Cox processes and CNN classifiers in order to count the number of instances of an object in an image. Poisson processes are well suited to events that occur randomly in space, like the location of objects in an image, as well as to the task of counting. Mixed Poisson processes also offer increased flexibility, however they do not easily scale with image size: they typically require O(n3) computation time and O(n2) storage, where n is the number of pixels. To mitigate this problem, we employ Kronecker algebra which takes advantage of the direct product …

Office of the Provost
We assessed the extent to which the publication of clinical trial results of innovative cell-based interventions reflects International Society for Stem Cell Research best practice guidelines. We assessed: (1) characteristics and time to publication of completed trials; (2) quality of reported trials; and (3) results of published trials. We identified and analyzed publications from 1,052 novel stem cell clinical trials: 179 (45.4%) of 393 completed trials had published results; 48 trials were registered by known stem cell tourism clinics, none of which reported results. Completed non-industry-sponsored trials initially published more rapidly, but differences with industry-sponsored trials decreased over time. Most …

BACKGROUND
Survival after the diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has been increasing since 2002 because of improved therapies; however, long-term outcomes for these patients in the modern treatment era are still unknown.
METHODS
Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data, this study first assessed factors associated with DLBCL-specific mortality during 2002-2012. An epidemiologic risk profile, based on clinical and demographic characteristics, was used to stratify DLBCL cases into low-, medium-, and high-risk groups. The proportions of DLBCL cases that might be considered cured in these 3 risk groups was estimated. Risks of death due to various noncancer causes …

Effects Of Ankle Weights On Metabolic Response And Muscle Activity On A Lower Body Positive Pressure Treadmill 2017, Saige Hupman
Effects Of Ankle Weights On Metabolic Response And Muscle Activity On A Lower Body Positive Pressure Treadmill 2017, Saige Hupman
Master's Theses
Lower body positive pressure (LBPP) treadmills are growing in popularity for rehabilitative use, as the benefits of exercising at partially supported body weight may induce faster recovery. It is unknown if there are certain practices that increase exercise intensity while maintaining positive effects of LBPP. Adding ankle weights when walking or running could increase intensity of rehabilitation programs while maintaining the comfort of supported body weight. PURPOSE: To measure metabolic response (VO2, RER, HR, Caloric expenditure), RPE, and lower limb electromyography (EMG) amplitudes of LBPP treadmill walking and running with and without ankle weights. METHODS: Sixteen participants (Age: 21.94 ± …

Missing data may be a concern for data analysis. If it has a hierarchical or nested structure, the SUDAAN package can be used for multiple imputation. This is illustrated with birth certificate data that was linked to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Assisted Reproductive Technology Surveillance System database. The Cox-Iannacchione weighted sequential hot deck method was used to conduct multiple imputation for missing/unknown values of covariates in a logistic model.

Selection Of Statistical Software For Data Scientists And Teachers, Ceyhun Ozgur, Min Dou, Yang Li, Grace Rogers
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The need for analysts with expertise in big data software is becoming more apparent in today’s society. Unfortunately, the demand for these analysts far exceeds the number available. A potential way to combat this shortage is to identify the software sought by employers and to align this with the software taught by universities. This paper will examine multiple data analysis software – Excel add-ins, SPSS, SAS, Minitab, and R – and it will outline the cost, training, statistical methods/tests/uses, and specific uses within industry for each of these software. It will further explain implications for universities and students.

Monte Carlo Study Of Some Classification-Based Ridge Parameter Estimators, Adewale Folaranmi Lukman, Kayode Ayinde, Adegoke S. Ajiboye
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Ridge estimator in linear regression model requires a ridge parameter, K, of which many have been proposed. In this study, estimators based on Dorugade (2014) and Adnan et al. (2014) were classified into different forms and various types using the idea of Lukman and Ayinde (2015). Some new ridge estimators were proposed. Results shows that the proposed estimators based on Adnan et al. (2014) perform generally better than the existing ones.
