Reliability Analysis For Systems With Outsourced Components, Zhengwei Hu Jan 2019

Reliability Analysis For Systems With Outsourced Components, Zhengwei Hu

Doctoral Dissertations

"The current business model for many industrial firms is to function as system integrators, depending on numerous outsourced components from outside component suppliers. This practice has resulted in tremendous cost savings; it makes system reliability analysis, however, more challenging due to the limited component information available to system designers. The component information is often proprietary to component suppliers. Motivated by the need of system reliability prediction with outsourced components, this work aims to explore feasible ways to accurately predict the system reliability during the system design stage. Four methods are proposed. The first method reconstructs component reliability functions using limited …

Novel Statistical Modeling Of Sleep Patterns In Drosophila Melanogaster, Luyang Wang Jan 2019

Novel Statistical Modeling Of Sleep Patterns In Drosophila Melanogaster, Luyang Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

”Sleep is one of the most important behaviors in animals, yet many aspects of sleep are not well understood. In humans, sleep has been shown to impact different aspects of health and cognitive performance. The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, can be used as a model organism to investigate sleep patterns over an entire lifespan. The sleep-wake status can be recorded every minute over the life of individual flies, resulting in a wealth of data for identifying meaningful aspects of sleep. In this work, a framework based on statistical modeling methods is developed for sleep data collected on fruit flies …

Almost Periodic Functions In Quantum Calculus, Martin Bohner, Jaqueline Godoy Mesquita

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, we introduce the concepts of Bochner and Bohr almost periodic functions in quantum calculus and show that both concepts are equivalent. Also, we present a correspondence between almost periodic functions defined in quantum calculus and N0, proving several important properties for this class of functions. We investigate the existence of almost periodic solutions of linear and nonlinear q-difference equations. Finally, we provide some examples of almost periodic functions in quantum calculus.

A Further Extension Of The Extended Riemann-Liouville Fractional Derivative Operator, Martin Bohner, Gauhar Rahman, Shahid Mubeen, Kottakkaran Sooppy Nisar

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The main objective of this paper is to establish the extension of an extended fractional derivative operator by using an extended beta function recently defined by Parmar et al. by considering the Bessel functions in its kernel. We also give some results related to the newly defined fractional operator, such as Mellin transform and relations to extended hypergeometric and Appell's function via generating functions.

Dynamics Of Paramagnetic And Ferromagnetic Ellipsoidal Particles In Shear Flow Under A Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki, Jie Zhang, Yanzhi Zhang, Cheng Wang Aug 2018

Dynamics Of Paramagnetic And Ferromagnetic Ellipsoidal Particles In Shear Flow Under A Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki, Jie Zhang, Yanzhi Zhang, Cheng Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the two-dimensional dynamic motion of magnetic particles of ellipsoidal shapes in shear flow under the influence of a uniform magnetic field. In the first part, we present a theoretical analysis of the rotational dynamics of the particles in simple shear flow. By considering paramagnetic and ferromagnetic particles, we study the effects of the direction and strength of the magnetic field on the particle rotation. The critical magnetic-field strength, at which particle rotation is impeded, is determined. In a weak-field regime (i.e., below the critical strength) where the particles execute complete rotations, the symmetry property of the rotational velocity …

Direct Error Driven Learning For Deep Neural Networks With Applications To Bigdata, R. Krishnan, Jagannathan Sarangapani, V. A. Samaranayake Apr 2018

Direct Error Driven Learning For Deep Neural Networks With Applications To Bigdata, R. Krishnan, Jagannathan Sarangapani, V. A. Samaranayake

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, generalization error for traditional learning regimes-based classification is demonstrated to increase in the presence of bigdata challenges such as noise and heterogeneity. To reduce this error while mitigating vanishing gradients, a deep neural network (NN)-based framework with a direct error-driven learning scheme is proposed. To reduce the impact of heterogeneity, an overall cost comprised of the learning error and approximate generalization error is defined where two NNs are utilized to estimate the costs respectively. To mitigate the issue of vanishing gradients, a direct error-driven learning regime is proposed where the error is directly utilized for learning. It …

A Multi-Step Nonlinear Dimension-Reduction Approach With Applications To Bigdata, R. Krishnan, V. A. Samaranayake, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a multi-step dimension-reduction approach is proposed for addressing nonlinear relationships within attributes. In this work, the attributes in the data are first organized into groups. In each group, the dimensions are reduced via a parametric mapping that takes into account nonlinear relationships. Mapping parameters are estimated using a low rank singular value decomposition (SVD) of distance covariance. Subsequently, the attributes are reorganized into groups based on the magnitude of their respective singular values. The group-wise organization and the subsequent reduction process is performed for multiple steps until a singular value-based user-defined criterion is satisfied. Simulation analysis is …

Approximation Degree Of Durrmeyer-Bézier Type Operators, Purshottam N. Agrawal, Serkan Araci, Martin Bohner, Kumari Lipi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, a mixed hybrid operator, generalizing the well-known Phillips operators and Baskakov-Szász type operators, was introduced. In this paper, we study Bézier variant of these new operators. We investigate the degree of approximation of these operators by means of the Lipschitz class function, the modulus of continuity, and a weighted space. We study a direct approximation theorem by means of the unified Ditzian-Totik modulus of smoothness. Furthermore, the rate of convergence for functions having derivatives of bounded variation is discussed.

Phytoforensics: Trees As Bioindicators Of Potential Indoor Exposure Via Vapor Intrusion, Jordan L. Wilson, V. A. Samaranayake, Matt A. Limmer, Joel Gerard Burken

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Human exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via vapor intrusion (VI) is an emerging public health concern with notable detrimental impacts on public health. Phytoforensics, plant sampling to semi-quantitatively delineate subsurface contamination, provides a potential non-invasive screening approach to detect VI potential, and plant sampling is effective and also time- and cost-efficient. Existing VI assessment methods are time- and resource-intensive, invasive, and require access into residential and commercial buildings to drill holes through basement slabs to install sampling ports or require substantial equipment to install groundwater or soil vapor sampling outside the home. Tree-core samples collected in 2 days at …

A Higher-Order Ensemble/Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Method For The Nonstationary Navier-Stokes Equations, Max Gunzburger, Nan Jiang, Michael Schneier Jan 2018

A Higher-Order Ensemble/Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Method For The Nonstationary Navier-Stokes Equations, Max Gunzburger, Nan Jiang, Michael Schneier

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Partial differential equations (PDE) often involve parameters, such as viscosity or density. An analysis of the PDE may involve considering a large range of parameter values, as occurs in uncertainty quantification, control and optimization, inference, and several statistical techniques. The solution for even a single case may be quite expensive; whereas parallel computing may be applied, this reduces the total elapsed time but not the total computational effort. In the case of flows governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, a method has been devised for computing an ensemble of solutions. Recently, a reduced-order model derived from a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) …

Parametrization Of Scale-Invariant Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Scale-Invariant Symmetric Operators, Miron B. Bekker, Martin Bohner, Alexander P. Ugol'nikov, Hristo Voulov Jan 2018

Parametrization Of Scale-Invariant Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Scale-Invariant Symmetric Operators, Miron B. Bekker, Martin Bohner, Alexander P. Ugol'nikov, Hristo Voulov

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

On a Hilbert space H, we consider a symmetric scale-invariant operator with equal defect numbers. It is assumed that the operator has at least one scale invariant self-adjoint extension in H. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between (generalized) resolvents of scale-invariant extensions and solutions of some functional equation. Two examples of Dirac-type operators are considered.

Decoupled, Linear, And Energy Stable Finite Element Method For The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy Phase Field Model, Yali Gao, Xiaoming He, Liquan Mei, Xiaofeng Yang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a phase field model of the coupled two-phase free flow and two-phase porous media flow. This model consists of Cahn—Hilliard—Navier—Stokes equations in the free flow region and Cahn—Hilliard—Darcy equations in the porous media region that are coupled by seven interface conditions. The coupled system is decoupled based on the interface conditions and the solution values on the interface from the previous time step. A fully discretized scheme with finite elements for the spatial discretization is developed to solve the decoupled system. In order to deal with the difficulties arising from the …

On Modeling Quantities For Insurer Solvency Against Catastrophe Under Some Markovian Assumptions, Daniel Jefferson Geiger Jan 2018

On Modeling Quantities For Insurer Solvency Against Catastrophe Under Some Markovian Assumptions, Daniel Jefferson Geiger

Doctoral Dissertations

"Insurance companies sometimes face catastrophic losses, yet they must remain solvent enough to meet the legal obligation of covering all claims. Catastrophes can result in large damages to the policyholders, causing the arrival of numerous claims to insurance companies at once. Furthermore, the severity of an event could impact the time until the next occurrence. An insurer needs certain levels of startup capital to meet all claims, and then must have adequate reserves on a continual basis, even more so when catastrophes occur. This work examines two facets of these matters: for an infinite time horizon, we extend and develop …

New Developments Of Dimension Reduction, Lei Huo Jan 2018

New Developments Of Dimension Reduction, Lei Huo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Variable selection becomes more crucial than before, since high dimensional data are frequently seen in many research areas. Many model-based variable selection methods have been developed. However, the performance might be poor when the model is mis-specified. Sufficient dimension reduction (SDR, Li 1991; Cook 1998) provides a general framework for model-free variable selection methods.

In this thesis, we first propose a novel model-free variable selection method to deal with multi-population data by incorporating the grouping information. Theoretical properties of our proposed method are also presented. Simulation studies show that our new method significantly improves the selection performance compared with those …

Convergence Analysis And Error Estimates For A Second Order Accurate Finite Element Method For The Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes System, Amanda E. Diegel, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a novel second order in time mixed finite element scheme for the Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes equations with matched densities. the scheme combines a standard second order Crank–Nicolson method for the Navier–Stokes equations and a modification to the Crank–Nicolson method for the Cahn–Hilliard equation. in particular, a second order Adams-Bashforth extrapolation and a trapezoidal rule are included to help preserve the energy stability natural to the Cahn–Hilliard equation. We show that our scheme is unconditionally energy stable with respect to a modification of the continuous free energy of the PDE system. Specifically, the discrete phase variable is shown …

The presented results improve and extend the earlier ones. Examples are provided to illustrate the main results.

Stationary Acceleration Of Frenet Curves, Nemat Abazari, Martin Bohner, Ilgin Sager, Yusuf Yayli Apr 2017

Stationary Acceleration Of Frenet Curves, Nemat Abazari, Martin Bohner, Ilgin Sager, Yusuf Yayli

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the stationary acceleration of the spherical general helix in a 3-dimensional Lie group is studied by using a bi-invariant metric. The relationship between the Frenet elements of the stationary acceleration curve in 4-dimensional Euclidean space and the intrinsic Frenet elements of the Lie group is outlined. As a consequence, the corresponding curvature and torsion of these curves are computed. In Minkowski space, for the curves on a timelike surface to have a stationary acceleration, a necessary and sufficient condition is refined.

A Functional Data Analytic Approach For Region Level Differential Dna Methylation Detection, Mohamed Salem F. Milad Jan 2017

A Functional Data Analytic Approach For Region Level Differential Dna Methylation Detection, Mohamed Salem F. Milad

Doctoral Dissertations

"DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification that can alter gene expression without a DNA sequence change. The role of DNA methylation in biological processes and human health is important to understand, with many studies identifying associations between specific methylation patterns and diseases such as cancer. In mammals, DNA methylation almost always occurs when a methyl group attaches to a cytosine followed by a guanine (i.e. CpG dinucleotides) on the DNA sequence. Many statistical methods have been developed to test for a difference in DNA methylation levels between groups (e.g. healthy vs disease) at individual cytosines. Site level testing is often …

Chain Transitive Homeomorphisms On A Space: All Or None, Ethan Akin, Juho Rautio Jan 2017

Chain Transitive Homeomorphisms On A Space: All Or None, Ethan Akin, Juho Rautio

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Extending earlier work, we consider when a compact metric space can be realized as the omega limit set of a discrete time dynamical system. This is equivalent to asking when the space admits a chain transitive homeomorphism. We approach this problem in terms of various conditions on the connected components of the space. We also construct spaces where all homeomorphisms are chain transitive.

Family-Based Association Studies Of Autism In Boys Via Facial-Feature Clusters, Luke Andrew Settles Jan 2017

Family-Based Association Studies Of Autism In Boys Via Facial-Feature Clusters, Luke Andrew Settles

Masters Theses

"Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a set of developmental disorders with varied attributes. Due to its substantial heterogeneity in terms of behavioral and clinical phenotypes, it is challenging to discern the genetic biomarkers behind ASD, even though the disease is known to be genetic in nature. This serves as a motivation to detect relationships between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and a causal autism disease susceptibility locus (DSL) within more homogeneous subgroups. Recently, clinically meaningful subclassifications of ASD have been discovered utilizing facial features of prepubescent boys. Therefore, through the employment of data from 44 prepubertal Caucasian boys with ASD …

Comparing Region Level Testing Methods For Differential Dna Methylation Analysis, Arnold Albert Harder Jan 2017

Comparing Region Level Testing Methods For Differential Dna Methylation Analysis, Arnold Albert Harder

Masters Theses

”Finding possible connections and solutions to help fight progression of diseases is a major area of research. Genomics is a primary path of research in disease research. Through the DNA sequence, possible connections to diseases have been found. However, most methods for fixing issues within a DNA sequence are still out of reach. One potential path is to investigate epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation. DNA methylation occurs when a methyl group attached to cytosines on the DNA sequence. Statistical methods can be used to identify sites or regions of significant differences in methylation levels between groups ( e. g. …

Development Of A Variogram Approach To Spatial Outlier Detection Using A Supplemental Digital Elevation Model Dataset, Zane Daniel Helwig Jan 2017

Development Of A Variogram Approach To Spatial Outlier Detection Using A Supplemental Digital Elevation Model Dataset, Zane Daniel Helwig

Masters Theses

"When developing a ground water model, the quality of the dataset should first be evaluated. Spatial outliers can lead to predictions which are not representative of actual conditions. In order to isolate misrepresentative points, a method is presented which examines the experimental variogram of a ground water elevation dataset. To define a threshold variance between pairs of ground water elevation measures, ground elevation values from a digital elevation model (DEM) are used to determine a maximum reasonable variance expected to occur on the experimental variogram. To determine appropriate DEM parameters, a separate study was also done which observed characteristic behavior …

Local Holomorphic Extension Of Cauchy Riemann Functions, Brijitta Antony Jan 2017

Local Holomorphic Extension Of Cauchy Riemann Functions, Brijitta Antony

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this dissertation is to give an analytic disc approach to the CR extension problem. Analytic discs give a very convenient tool for holomorphic extension of CR functions. The type function is introduced and showed how these type functions have direct application to important questions about CR extension. In this dissertation the CR extension theorem is proved for a rigid hypersurface M in C2 given by y = (Re ω)m(Im ω)n where m and n are non-negative integers. If the type function is identically zero at the origin, then there is no CR extension. …

An Efficient And Long-Time Accurate Third-Order Algorithm For The Stokes–Darcy System, Wenbin Chen, Max Gunzburger, Dong Sun, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A third order in time numerical IMEX-type algorithm for the Stokes–Darcy system for flows in fluid saturated karst aquifers is proposed and analyzed. a novel third-order Adams–Moulton scheme is used for the discretization of the dissipative term whereas a third-order explicit Adams–Bashforth scheme is used for the time discretization of the interface term that couples the Stokes and Darcy components. the scheme is efficient in the sense that one needs to solve, at each time step, decoupled Stokes and Darcy problems. Therefore, legacy Stokes and Darcy solvers can be applied in parallel. the scheme is also unconditionally stable and, with …

Birth Mass Is The Key To Understanding The Negative Correlation Between Lifespan And Body Size In Dogs, Rong Fan, Gayla R. Olbricht, Xavior Baker, Chen Hou Dec 2016

Birth Mass Is The Key To Understanding The Negative Correlation Between Lifespan And Body Size In Dogs, Rong Fan, Gayla R. Olbricht, Xavior Baker, Chen Hou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Larger dog breeds live shorter than the smaller ones, opposite of the mass-lifespan relationship observed across mammalian species. Here we use data from 90 dog breeds and a theoretical model based on the first principles of energy conservation and life history tradeoffs to explain the negative correlation between longevity and body size in dogs. We found that the birth/adult mass ratio of dogs scales negatively with adult size, which is different than the weak interspecific scaling in mammals. Using the model, we show that this ratio, as an index of energy required for growth, is the key to understanding why …
