New Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Approximation Theory For Pde Solution Data, Sarah Locke, John R. Singler
New Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Approximation Theory For Pde Solution Data, Sarah Locke, John R. Singler
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In our previous work [J. R. Singler, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 52 (2014), pp. 852- 876], we considered the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of time varying PDE solution data taking values in two different Hilbert spaces. We considered various POD projections of the data and obtained new results concerning POD projection errors and error bounds for POD reduced order models of PDEs. In this work, we improve on our earlier results concerning POD projections by extending to a more general framework that allows for nonorthogonal POD projections and seminorms. We obtain new exact error formulas and convergence results for POD …

In this paper, we investigate the representation of curves on the lightlike cone ℚ³₂ in Minkowski space ℝ⁴₂ by structure functions. In addition, with this representation, we classify all of the null curves on the lightlike cone ℚ³₂ in four types, and we obtain a natural Frenet frame for these null curves. Furthermore, for this natural Frenet frame, we calculate curvature functions of a null curve, especially the curvature function κ₂ = 0 , and we show that any null curve on the lightlike cone is a helix. Finally, we find all curves with constant curvature functions.

A map f:X→Y from a continuum X onto a continuum Y is said to be hereditarily irreducible, if f(A)⊊f(B) for any subcontinua A and B such that A⊊B. We investigate properties of hereditarily irreducible maps between continua. Special attention is given to maps between graphs and maps from the interval.

An Explainable And Statistically Validated Ensemble Clustering Model Applied To The Identification Of Traumatic Brain Injury Subgroups, Dacosta Yeboah, Louis Steinmeister, Daniel B. Hier, Bassam Hadi, Donald C. Wunsch, Gayla R. Olbricht, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present a framework for an explainable and statistically validated ensemble clustering model applied to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The objective of our analysis is to identify patient injury severity subgroups and key phenotypes that delineate these subgroups using varied clinical and computed tomography data. Explainable and statistically-validated models are essential because a data-driven identification of subgroups is an inherently multidisciplinary undertaking. In our case, this procedure yielded six distinct patient subgroups with respect to mechanism of injury, severity of presentation, anatomy, psychometric, and functional outcome. This framework for ensemble cluster analysis fully integrates statistical methods at several stages of …
Student Preclass Preparation By Both Reading The Textbook And Watching Videos Online Improves Exam Performance In A Partially Flipped Course, Kaleb Bassett, Gayla R. Olbricht, Katie Shannon
Student Preclass Preparation By Both Reading The Textbook And Watching Videos Online Improves Exam Performance In A Partially Flipped Course, Kaleb Bassett, Gayla R. Olbricht, Katie Shannon
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The flipped classroom has the potential to improve student performance. Because flipping involves both preclass preparation and problem solving in the classroom, the means by which increased learning occurs and whether the method of delivering content matters is of interest. In a partially flipped cell biology course, students were assigned online videos before the flipped class and textbook reading before lectures. Low-stakes assessments were used to incentivize both types of preclass preparation. We hypothesized that more students would watch the videos than read the textbook and that both types of preparation would positively affect exam performance. A multiple linear regression …

Background: Patient distances can be calculated based on signs and symptoms derived from an ontological hierarchy. There is controversy as to whether patient distance metrics that consider the semantic similarity between concepts can outperform standard patient distance metrics that are agnostic to concept similarity. The choice of distance metric can dominate the performance of classification or clustering algorithms. Our objective was to determine if semantically augmented distance metrics would outperform standard metrics on machine learning tasks.
Methods: We converted the neurological findings from 382 published neurology cases into sets of concepts with corresponding machine-readable codes. We calculated patient distances by …
Inverse Limits And Atomic Projections, Włodzimierz J. Charatonik, Faruq A. Mena, Robert Paul Roe
Inverse Limits And Atomic Projections, Włodzimierz J. Charatonik, Faruq A. Mena, Robert Paul Roe
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider generalized inverse limits of continua with bonding functions Fn that have the projection of Graph (Fn) onto the second (first) factor atomic and images (pre-image) of points are zero-dimensional. For such bonding functions we show that under some easily verified conditions that if the first (all) factor space(s) has a certain property then the inverse limit space must have this property. The properties considered include hereditary decomposability, hereditary indecomposability, hereditary unicoherence, arc-likeness, and tree-likeness. We illustrate the theorems by several examples.

Energy Stable Numerical Schemes For Ternary Cahn-Hilliard System, Wenbin Chen, Cheng Wang, Shufen Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present and analyze a uniquely solvable and unconditionally energy stable numerical scheme for the ternary Cahn-Hilliard system, with a polynomial pattern nonlinear free energy expansion. One key difficulty is associated with presence of the three mass components, though a total mass constraint reduces this to two components. Another numerical challenge is to ensure the energy stability for the nonlinear energy functional in the mixed product form, which turns out to be non-convex, non-concave in the three-phase space. to overcome this subtle difficulty, we add a few auxiliary terms to make the combined energy functional convex in the three-phase space, …

On The Noisy Gradient Descent That Generalizes As Sgd, Jingfeng Wu, Wenqing Hu, Haoyi Xiong, Jun Huan, Vladimir Braverman, Zhanxing Zhu
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The gradient noise of SGD is considered to play a central role in the observed strong generalization abilities of deep learning. While past studies confirm that the magnitude and covariance structure of gradient noise are critical for regularization, it remains unclear whether or not the class of noise distributions is important. In this work we provide negative results by showing that noises in classes different from the SGD noise can also effectively regularize gradient descent. Our finding is based on a novel observation on the structure of the SGD noise: it is the multiplication of the gradient matrix and a …

Vanishing Porosity Limit Of The Coupled Stokes-Brinkman System, Mingwen Fei, Dongjuan Niu, Xiaoming Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the small porosity asymptotic behavior of the coupled Stokes-Brinkman system in the presence of a curved interface between the Stokes region and the Brinkman region. in particular, we derive a set of approximate solutions, validated via rigorous analysis, to the coupled Stokes-Brinkman system. of particular interest is that the approximate solution satisfies a generalized Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface condition (1.9) with the constant of proportionality independent of the curvature of the interface.

"The problem of missing data and imputation have been widely discussed amongst specialists. However, many data scientists and applied statisticians fail to appropriately consider this issue. Often, it seems intuitive to discard observations containing missing data or simply to substitute means. This can lead to disastrous consequences, particularly in an era of exponentially increasing data volumes. In the following, we show how inappropriate handling of missing data and an insufficient analysis of the censoring mechanism can lead to a bias, overconfidence in the estimation of parameters, could challenge the reproducibility of obtained results, and may distort the structure of the …

We are interested in the existence of multiple weak solutions for the Neumann elliptic problem involving the anisotropic -Laplacian operator, on a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We work on the anisotropic variable exponent Sobolev space, and by using a consequence of the local minimum theorem due to Bonanno, we establish existence of at least one weak solution under algebraic conditions on the nonlinear term. Also, we discuss existence of at least two weak solutions for the problem, under algebraic conditions including the classical Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition on the nonlinear term. Furthermore, by employing a three critical point theorem due to …
The Application Of Machine Learning Models In The Concussion Diagnosis Process, Sujit Subhash
The Application Of Machine Learning Models In The Concussion Diagnosis Process, Sujit Subhash
Masters Theses
“Concussions represent a growing health concern and are challenging to diagnose and manage. Roughly four million concussions are diagnosed every year in the United States. Although research into the application of advanced metrics such as neuroimages and blood biomarkers has shown promise, they are yet to be implemented at a clinical level due to cost and reliability concerns. Therefore, concussion diagnosis is still reliant on clinical evaluations of symptoms, balance, and neurocognitive status and function. The lack of a universal threshold on these assessments makes the diagnosis process entirely reliant on a physician’s interpretation of these assessment scores. This study …

Quantifying Effects Of Sleep Deprivation On Cognitive Performance, Quang Nghia Le
Masters Theses
“The most commonly used metric for evaluating alertness and vigilance is the Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT), previous studies have indicated that alertness and vigilance can be affected by the lack of sleep as a function of sleep loss. This study explores methods to predict median psychomotor vigilance reaction times. The data used in this study comes from a series of tests and surveys conducted on volunteer students. The data set contains many potential predictors of PVT and one aspect of the study was to identify variables that are useful in prediction. The performances of various prediction methods that allow for …

Fuzzy Logistic Regression For Detecting Differential Dna Methylation Regions, Tarek M. Bubaker Bennaser
Doctoral Dissertations
“Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene activity or function that are not related to a change in the DNA sequence. DNA methylation is one of the main types of epigenetic modifications, that occur when a methyl chemical group attaches to a cytosine on the DNA sequence. Although the sequence does not change, the addition of a methyl group can change the way genes are expressed and produce different phenotypes. DNA methylation is involved in many biological processes and has important implications in the fields of biomedicine and agriculture.
Statistical methods have been developed to compare DNA methylation at …

Stochastic compositional optimization arises in many important machine learning applications. The objective function is the composition of two expectations of stochastic functions, and is more challenging to optimize than vanilla stochastic optimization problems. In this paper, we investigate the stochastic compositional optimization in the general smooth non-convex setting. We employ a recently developed idea of Stochastic Recursive Gradient Descent to design a novel algorithm named SARAH-Compositional, and prove a sharp Incremental First-order Oracle (IFO) complexity upper bound for stochastic compositional optimization: 𝒪((n + m)1/2ε-2) in the finite-sum case and 𝒪(ε-3) in the online case. …
Approximation Dynamics, Ethan Akin
Approximation Dynamics, Ethan Akin

We describe the approximation of a continuous dynamical system on a p.l. manifold or Cantor set by a tractable system. A system is tractable when it has a finite number of chain components and, with respect to a given full background measure, almost every point is generic for one of a finite number of ergodic invariant measures. The approximations we use are non-degenerate simplicial dynamical systems for p.l. manifolds and shift-like dynamical systems for Cantor Sets.

A Multi-Step Approach To Modeling The 24-Hour Daily Profiles Of Electricity Load Using Daily Splines, Abdelmonaem Jornaz, V. A. Samaranayake
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Forecasting of real-time electricity load has been an important research topic over many years. Electricity load is driven by many factors, including economic conditions and weather. Furthermore, the demand for electricity varies with time, with different hours of the day and different days of the week having an effect on the load. This paper proposes a hybrid load-forecasting method that combines classical time series formulations with cubic splines to model electricity load. It is shown that this approach produces a model capable of making short-term forecasts with reasonable accuracy. In contrast to forecasting models that utilize a multitude of regressor …

An Optimal Edg Method For Distributed Control Of Convection Diffusion Pdes, X. Zhang, Y. Zhang, John R. Singler
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose an embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) method to approximate the solution of a distributed control problem governed by convection diffusion PDEs, and obtain optimal a priori error estimates for the state, dual state, their uxes, and the control. Moreover, we prove the optimize-then-discretize (OD) and discrtize-then-optimize (DO) approaches coincide. Numerical results confirm our theoretical results.

Three-Dimensional Rotation Of Paramagnetic And Ferromagnetic Prolate Spheroids In Simple Shear And Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki, Yanzhi Zhang, Cheng Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We examine a time-dependent, three-dimensional rotation of magnetic ellipsoidal particles in a two-dimensional, simple shear flow and a uniform magnetic field. We consider that the particles have paramagnetic and ferromagnetic properties, and we compare their rotational dynamics due to the strengths and directions of the applied uniform magnetic field. We determine the critical magnetic field strength that can pin the particles' rotations. Above the critical field strength, the particles' stable steady angles were determined. In a weak magnetic regime (below the critical field strength), a paramagnetic particle's polar angle will oscillate toward the magnetic field plane while its azimuthal angle …

In this article, we classify nonoscillatory solutions of a system of three-dimensional time scale systems. We use the method of considering the sign of components of such solutions. Examples are given to highlight some of our results. Moreover, the existence of such solutions is obtained by Knaster's fixed point theorem.

An Hdg Method For Dirichlet Boundary Control Of Convection Dominated Diffusion Pdes, Gang Chen, John R. Singler, Yangwen Zhang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We first propose a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to approximate the solution of a convection dominated Dirichlet boundary control problem without constraints. Dirichlet boundary control problems and convection dominated problems are each very challenging numerically due to solutions with low regularity and sharp layers, respectively. Although there are some numerical analysis works in the literature on diffusion dominated convection diffusion Dirichlet boundary control problems, we are not aware of any existing numerical analysis works for convection dominated boundary control problems. Moreover, the existing numerical analysis techniques for convection dominated PDEs are not directly applicable for the Dirichlet boundary control …

On The Instabilities And Transitions Of The Western Boundary Current, Daozhi Han, Marco Hernandez, Quan Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We study the stability and dynamic transitions of the western boundary currents in a rectangular closed basin. By reducing the infinite dynamical system to a finite dimensional one via center manifold reduction, we derive a non-dimensional transition number that determines the types of dynamical transition. We show by careful numerical evaluation of the transition number that both continuous transitions (supercritical Hopf bifurcation) and catastrophic transitions (subcritical Hopf bifurcation) can happen at the critical Reynolds number, depending on the aspect ratio and stratification. The regions separating the continuous and catastrophic transitions are delineated on the parameter plane.

Positivity-Preserving, Energy Stable Numerical Schemes For The Cahn-Hilliard Equation With Logarithmic Potential, Wenbin Chen, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper we present and analyze finite difference numerical schemes for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with a logarithmic Flory Huggins energy potential. Both first and second order accurate temporal algorithms are considered. in the first order scheme, we treat the nonlinear logarithmic terms and the surface diffusion term implicitly and update the linear expansive term and the mobility explicitly. We provide a theoretical justification that this numerical algorithm has a unique solution, such that the positivity is always preserved for the logarithmic arguments, i.e., the phase variable is always between −1 and 1, at a point-wise level. in particular, our …

We present and analyze a second order in time variable step BDF2 numerical scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. the construction relies on a second order backward difference, convex-splitting technique and viscous regularizing at the discrete level. We show that the scheme is unconditionally stable and uniquely solvable. in addition, under mild restriction on the ratio of adjacent time-steps, an optimal second order in time convergence rate is established. the proof involves a novel generalized discrete Gronwall-type inequality. as far as we know, this is the first rigorous proof of second order convergence for a variable step BDF2 scheme, even in …
The Correlation Between Sleep And Lifespan In Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Randall Lisse
The Correlation Between Sleep And Lifespan In Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Randall Lisse
Masters Theses
”Adequate sleep is associated with an individual’s health. Too little sleep is associated with many health problems, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and a general increase in all-cause mortality. Yet the molecular changes that link poor sleep and changes in health are still not well understood. Individuals have a unique daily need for sleep, and deviations from the animal’s regular sleeping patterns can be indicative of, or result in, underlying changes in its health. Therefore, we hypothesize that changes in the sleep architecture in Drosophila melanogaster reflect changes in the fly’s health.
We determined sleep architecture in wild-type male flies over …

"Multiple recurrent reinforcement learners were implemented to make trading decisions based on real and freely available macro-economic data. The learning algorithm and different reinforcement functions (the Differential Sharpe Ratio, Differential Downside Deviation Ratio and Returns) were revised and the performances were compared while transaction costs were taken into account. (This is important for practical implementations even though many publications ignore this consideration.) It was assumed that the traders make long-short decisions in the S&P500 with complementary 3-month treasury bill investments. Leveraged positions in the S&P500 were disallowed. Notably, the Differential Sharpe Ratio and the Differential Downside Deviation Ratio are risk …
